We stayed at the Hotel El Manglar, The staff was wonderful beginning from making the reservation to our arrival and departure. We had great instructions on their contact free check process in including lock codes and key location due for our late arrival. They set up our Transportation from the Liberia airport via 506 Transfers and they were waiting for us upon our arrival with cold water in the van.

The ocean is only a short walk through their locked private gate and the beach is unbelievably beautifully, Great for Surfing, although we didn't surf it was great to see people enjoying the surf both mornings and at sunsets.

The property at Hotel El Manglar is great, We had a villa room with Kitchen, relaxing areas both inside and out with private hammock and King bed and great water pressure in the shower!

Andrea took great care of us every day, She set up our Covid Test with a local clinic with round trip transportation and our return trip to the airport, she also set up a few activities for us during the week.

There are also some very good restaurants in the immediate area, "Bistro Catarana" and "Cafe Mar Azul" are only a very short walk away and Tamarindo is only a short walk and water taxi ride away where there are several shops, restaurants to visit.

We would highly recommend Hotel El Manglar, Andrea, Gabriela and Denis were all very attentive to the needs of every guest and always available to answer and questions or make reservations for anything anyone would need.

Hotel El Manglar is a place I would definitely visit again. It is situated adjacent within a 1 min walk to a protected beach which is absolutely stunning. The hotel is gorgeous with amazing staff. The rooms are well cared for, and suites with full kitchens are super affordable and convenient. They offer complimentary coffee daily, as well as beach chairs, surf boards and boogie boards, and you can rent bikes and get a massage if you choose. There are absolutely amazing restaurants also within a 1 to 5 minute walk which is super convenient. I would recommend this location and hotel to everyone!

This lovely little place in Playa Grande is a smaller hotel, but that was what we loved about it!! There is a secure gate with access to the beach that is just about a minute walk from the hotel. The grounds are very lovely and green. We had a superior villa with the small kitchen. There is an air conditioner in the bedroom. The front room where the kitchen and fridge are though, can get somewhat stuffy. I do wish there was a ceiling fan in there. Denis was awesome and helped us book several excursions and asked so many of our questions before we even arrived!! We plan to go back again in a couple of years and will definitely be staying here!!! PURA VIDA!!

We are couple from Czech Republice, who had the pleasure to spend 3 night in this lovely hotel in the middle of paradise together with a group of local friends. We have to say that we had a great time in this property. El Manglar hotel is located just 2 minutes walking from beautiful Playa Grande, far far away from noisy city of Tamarindo. It is great escape to find a peace. The owners are very nice people who lead their staff to deliver extraordinary service to each client. Hotel has clean rooms and pool with bar aside. Healthy breakfast and lunch options are offered and also all types and sizes of surfs for rent. Our overal experience was delightfull and we are definitely coming back in the future.

After two weeks of hiking all around Costa Rica, we finished off our trip with three days at this hotel. It's in a very remote area, which means it's nice and quiet. Even though it's remote, it's still not that far from a couple of decent restaurants. The staff at the hotel are super friendly and help with everything. They can suggest some great excursions and restaurants for you. I'd suggest you stop for groceries on the way there, cause there's only one convenience store near-by, and they charge way more knowing they're the only one around. For those who love long walks on the beach, this is the place to be. And for those who are into or would like to try surfing, you'll be in paradise. There are surf shops around every corner and plenty of surfers in the water. The rooms were spacious and clean. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed for simple meals. The only negative point that comes to mind is the water pressure. There was none whatsoever in the shower. But besides that, a great hotel. We would recommend it to anyone.

Hola, Thank you so much for your time sharing your experience! We are located in a beautiful Beach inside a National Park! We are working hard to keep the water pressure to the best standards, but we are in the middle of the dry season so the city make adjusted to conserve water, means they only provide 5 hours a day water. The hotel has to adjust to this condition to provide water 24hrs a day! But still we are working to improved our system! Thank you so much for recommending us!!! Pura Vida

Can’t believe they advertise this place as a 3 star Hotel as this is a 2 stars at best.
First of all, like advertised there is no restaurant on site, the restaurant is a 2min walk away and has very low quality food. No breakfast is included when staying at El Manglar, not even a continental breakfast.

When it comes down to service, a big zero. They “clean” the rooms every other day and that’s not what I call cleaning.
They NEVER changed the bedsheets in our 10 day trip. all the “cleaning” crew does is give you 3 new towels, broom the floor and that’s it. I have had cleaner rooms at Holiday Inns even at Motel 6.

The place is branding itself as a Surf Hotel but will charge you to borrow a surf board, charge you to borrow a bicyle (while all other hotels around offer it for free to their guests).

They do not provide you with any free water, you have to buy bottled water and theres nothing around the hotel.

Let’s be honest, El Manglar is a mix of an Airbnb & Motel but nowhere near a 3 star Hotel.

Hotel El Manglar was our favorite part of our trip to Costa Rica. The proximity of this hotel to playa grande was a huge plus. Playa grande is so pristine and quiet. The hotel has great epoxy boards on site to rent and beach cruisers. The beds were also so comfortable. The best part is how friendly the staff is. We were so happy to surf with Denis and Liz who are part of the management. They gave us the best service we have ever had both at the hotel and at the restaurant The Cataranya (the sister property to El Manglar). We are definitely coming back to surf with this great group of people! They really treat you like friends. Playa Grande is not a party spot like Tamarindo but it’s perfect for those looking to relax and surf in quiet spot a water taxi away from Tamarindo.

Here are why I was so disappointed and left the hotel:

In the first room they gave me, there was no wi-fi connection. Also phone doesn't get the service. Guy in the reception adviced me that wifi is working on third floor, like I need to go there at every time. And the girl in the reception said, wifi is not working because a cable was burned and then she stopped, suggesting no solution. I said when it's going to be repaired, she said Monday, three days later that is time I'm going to leave and she knows that.

After my insistance for a solution they start to speak Spanish in front of me where they can both speak English. They didn't want me to understand what they are saying. After that they offered me another room on 3rd floor, a room that is made in the attic. She said only difference is the window is smaller, I said fine.

I went to room to see that the room was smelling like sewage, it is too hot (a/c needed to run for an hour to bring it to an acceptable temperature) and wifi was still disconnecting. I went to the store since they even don't offer drinking water, shampoo, any kind of food or drink. When I came back I found 3 large geckos just in front of the room, one small gecko inside the room but also big black ants were continously getting inside from the window. I saw 4 of them git inside in 10 minutes. And wifi was still get disconnected.

I went to the office again and they told me there is nothing they can do for things above. They didn't allow me to talk with their supervisor. I said I'm leaving (in the middle of the night, under rain, and roads are terrible there with a lot of potholes) and went to room to get my stuff. They followed me and got in the room, girl first told there is no gecko in the room, yes because these animals don't stand still also she started a youtube video telling me that the wifi is working. The problem was it's not working, it was repetive disconnected. So she imply that I'm lying to them. They also wanted me to bring the pool
Towel that they gave it to me to bring to the front desk from the room when I was carrying 3 things already. When I told them no service and wifi problem is important in case of an emergency, she said I can walk downstairs to the garden and make calls, this is her solution if somebody falls and brakes a bome or getting a heart attack then, climb down to the garden! Also the room gets too hot in a very short amount of time and it has been raining all day, if power went off I would bake. She couldn't find anything to say.

But the most annoying thing is that they were in all defensive mode instead of solving the problems and implying that I was lying to them.

My husband and I are retired. The world has reopened and we are ready to travel again. Costa Rica during the rainy season is a dream. It rains every day cooling things off. We found a perfect place to stay. El Manglar beach hotel in Playa Grande. At night the area is gate restricted to residents only. We were walking distance to a beautiful sandy beach. Surf and boogie board rentals as well as lessons are available on sight. I spent the majority of my lazy evenings listening to music swinging in a hammock on the patio of our poolside unit. The patio is also equipped with a grill, seating, and ceiling fan. The unit had a full kitchen stocked with all necessities. Highly professional and friendly staff, Andreas and Yonya made sure we had everything we needed. There's plenty of parking for rental cars. Directly across the street is a path to the beach or you can relax in the Chill Out area which offers a basketball court, ping pong table, hammocks and yoga. Tropical birds lull you to sleep at night and gently wake you in the morning. For my fellow pet lovers, this resort is dog friendly. There's a pool and swim bar on sight. There are plenty of restaurants in walking distance. Big Thanks again to Andreas and Yonya. We are very grateful that you were on sight for our visit. Seasoned travelers know that the staff can make or break your get away vacations.

This hotel is situated in a unique location. It's a small community with great access to the beach, restaurants, and Tamarindo. The rooms were comfortable and the air conditioning ideal. Extremely safe, great parking for our rental car, and tours if we wanted them or not. I would suggest bringing bottled water (if that's your thing), as the little grocery store may or may not be open.

Is the ocean swimmable by this property or just for surfing?
Answer from David C
My wife and I spent lots of time in the water. During high tide there are a lot of surfers, but the waves break quite far out so they never surf all the way in to the beach, so there’s plenty of room to splash around while the surfers are doing their thing without worrying about them running into you. Plus the beach is SOOOOO long that you will have no trouble finding a place with no surfers, if you are willing to walk a bit! We brought a sun shade, picked up a cooler and water/Gatorade at Walmart and spent all day at the beach every day. There is a long shelf as you head in the water, so at high tide you can go pretty far out and only be in knee/waist deep water, so that’s pretty friendly for swimming, at low tide here’s a lot of beach to walk close to the water to find shells, etc. I’m not sure the waves and ocean are good for younger kids to swim in, but again, at high tide you can go pretty far out and still be able to stand easily. But the waves might still knock a child over. But for adults it’s fine
