It was for my son’s wedding. Everything was wonderful. It was probably the best experience that I have had in a long time. The rooms were great! Included air conditioning, soundproof walls, very comfortable bed, refrigerator, stove top, microwave, coffee maker, expresso maker, dishes, utensils, and extremely clean. The staff was friendly and over accommodating, prepared to meet your needs and insure satisfaction. Andrea is a gem. She went over and aboard her job description, doing any and everything that was need to make sure that the wedding party was happy. The beach was less than 2 minutes walking distance, directly across from the hotel. I did not want to leave. I LOVED IT! Will be returning. Forgot about the cost. I spent 7 nights and 6 days and did not break the bank.

I loved this hotel. The room was basic, but the atmosphere overall was fabulous. Great small pool, easy walk to one of the most beautiful private beaches. The restaurant had fantastic food and drinks- Mario was amazing. If I come back to Costa Rica I will not be staying anywhere else. It was magical!

Nice small hotel with 5 rooms, small swimming pool and restaurant. Room upstairs was nice with 1 double and 1 single bed, refrigerator, A/C, TV. Nice patio with table, chairs and hammock. The beach is a few minutes' walk. Nice for surfing and swimming. Very warm water in the ocean. Yoga class 3x/week for fee. Breakfast was not incl. but available for $9. There is other 3 restaurants and small store in walking distance.

This hotel seems lovely when you arrive, but behind the façade of a trendy boutique hotel is a property that needs much attention and a service mentality. The staff are strangely not very helpful, especially when you have issues with your room or are requesting directions or help finding things. They seem to only have a skeleton staff here at any time. service in the restaurant is unbelievably slow. We had to wait well over an hour for any food whatsoever. And watching the one or two people in the kitchen trying to catch up is beyond frustrating. The setting of Playa grande is very beautiful. You’re very near an amazing beach with great surfing and opportunities for long walks. The rooms are somewhat comfortable but when you have an issue like a plugged toilet, nobody comes or even responds to your messages. One of the people in our party used one of the public toilets on site as ours was plugged. He ended up being locked in the bathroom due to a malfunctioning handle / lock and unable to escape without a full destruction of the lock and door by a helpful passerby. It’s really disappointing, because this hotel could be great, it has all of the basics (nice rooms and beds) but it falls short in so many ways.

Playa Grande seems to have large rental properties and small hotels. Our room and terrace at Hotel Cantarana were spacious and the pool and grounds pleasantly tropical. Excellent storage in the both the room and the bath. The pool has great shade though there isn’t much of it. There’s a great restaurant on site and friendly and helpful staff. It is really close to the beach. (The sister property Manglar is even closer to the beach. I was debating between the two with no idea they had the same owner.) Getting to and around Playa Grande was a bit of a challenge. I had to hunt around to find a shuttle between there and Santa Elena, and our shuttle from there to Montezuma didn’t run all the way to the south end of the beach. It is a really long beach and walking from one end to the other by road did not look appealing and by beach would be really hot as there’s no shade. We rented a car while there for sightseeing. If we were to go back I might just rent a car to get there and back too.

The place looks wonderful at pictures, but instead it is not like that. The garden en swimming pool are dirty and not clean as it should be. even there was a self check Inn, which is oke but no proper description. There was no number on at the room, so we didn’t new what room was ours. the room, bathroom and kitchen are perfectly fine. No complains. the reception is in a other hotel. This guy Engelbert was oke but did not help us at all. ❌we asked about a turtle tour, this was not possible. ❌we asked about laundry, not possible Oke this whole place was not personal at any kind. Only the lady in de restaurant was great!!

The room assigned to us was an error but staff handled a bad situation as best they could. We reserved and paid for a villa months in advance. Upon arrival we were taken to a lower category standard room. Exploring our concerns about the unexplained downgrade, staff finally agreed that we had indeed reserved a villa. The manager, Andrea, explained that they had made a mistake. She said our villa had been freshly painted and could not be occupied that day due to the fumes. She also said the hotel had booked that villa for the following nights when we were supposed to occupy it. With no other villas available at either of their two sister hotels (Cantarana and Manglar), the manager offered us choices. We could receive a full refund but this was not practical due to our long tiring travel that day. Or, we could stay in the lower category room but receive free breakfasts - no refund. Later she also offered other small concessions including a tote bag and welcome drinks. We begrudgingly agreed to the latter. What we really wanted was the villa that we had paid for. Our night in the unappealing tired downgraded room, was shattered in the middle of the night by some animal clanging metal around abive us. We later learned it was most likely a racoon rummaging through the kitchen in the hotel restaurant located above us. Worse yet, we woke up the next morning to a cold shower - no hot water. We'd finally had enough. Staff refunded the remaining nights fees and we moved to another hotel. Andrea the manager handled the tough situation very politely and sincerely apologized to us. Nevertheless, our experience was a major disappointment and caused unwanted disruption during our vacation. We would NOT RETURN HERE.

When we arrived the hotel was empty. There were no people to help or welcome us, which felt a bit odd. The room was worn down and dirty. Even the coffee cup was dirty (see pictures) We therefore wanted to shorten our stay, but the the staff was completely unhelpful and started arguing with us instead. We therefore decided to book another hotel eve though this hotel would not shorten our stay.

The best part of our experience at this hotel was meeting the locals who work at the hotel and restaurants, and meeting other guests from around the world. We especially loved the reception we got from Yorya. She was extremely helpful, and knowledgeable about Costa Rica and the local area. She is well-suited for this kind of work with the guests. We plan to stay in contact with her. We would like to visit Costa Rica again. We will be telling our friends about the surfing camp just down the street. It would be a great experience for families and young adults.
