This is a solid, 3-star hotel.
Pros - the LOCATION! You're literally right on the beach. Playa Hermosa is clean and small (~2 km in length) and the water is warm, pretty clear, and safe. Also, we found that the beds were clean, and the...More
I highly recommend this hotel to those who want to enjoy a tranquil, almost empty beach (tiny waves, like a swimming pool) and who don't mind staying in a friendly but dated hotel. The staff for the most part were very friendly and helpful. They...More
I bring a large group to Costa Rica each year to do service work in the area. I want very Costa Rican experiences for my travelers...not luxury. El Velero is perfect! It is an older hotel, and as such, some areas show their age, but...More
Yes, it really is by the beach. It's old style. Was comfortable enough, but grungy. Ok to do in a pinch, but not extended period. We were just passing through. Staff is nice. But avoid the food here at all costs. It's going to be...More
On the plus side: Beautiful older hotel directly on the beach. Red tile floors, great second floor veranda for reading, pretty blue tiled swimming pool. Waiters provide excellent service and food is tasty.
On the minus side: Meals are surprisingly expensive. Rooms could use updating....More

The food at El Velero is pretty good. Ginger is directly east of the hotel up on the main road. It is a Spanish Tapas restaurant, and very reasonably priced for the quality of food that is served. La Casita Del Marisco is a small seafood joint that is close to the Condovac, they serve all kinds of different fresh seafood dishes. Restaurant Mangaby is small little restaurant that is just up from the beach towards Ginger. It is a small quint hotel that has a bar and restaurant on the premises. The food is quite good, and the service is great.
