My boyfriend James and I loved our stay at the lodge! Being a huge animal lover I was in my element here, we saw plenty of sloths, frogs, monkeys and gorgeous butterflies all within the property. We stayed in the king suite and were really comfortable here, it was the perfect way to end a 5 week trip in paradise...

Pepo and Sonia are excellent hosts. The staff are all so friendly, helpful and afficient. Breakfasts are so tasty...home made bread and jams, amazing juices, good coffee and super omelettes. Yet it is the amazing wildlife that is such a bonus. Sloths live in the trees right by the lodge. Howler monkeys growled at night and we saw them jumping...

A wonderful ecolodge away from the hustle and bustle of Puerto Viejo. Hosts Pepo and Sonia could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Accommodations were lovely (keeping in mind it is an eco lodge not a luxury hotel). So well suited to the area. Lots of wild life to be seen right outside your door.( sloths, howler monkeys, toucans,...

I stayed here with my mother for five nights. What an amazing place and a highlight of our trip! The wildlife you will see on the property is one of its selling points...monkeys, sloths, toucans, frogs...they have it all. Makes you feel as if you really truly are staying IN the jungle. The food and all the staff were amazing,...

If you want to be away from the crowd this is a great spot. We loved the food and the hospitality in addition to the wildlife in the trees right by our porch. One morning during a fantastic breakfast we watched two sloths climbing in the trees! Playa Chiquita is a short walk and there are several other quiet options...

My family and I stayed in 'Casa Kukula' (the larger of the two private houses in the grounds of La Kukula Lodge) in April 2016, and we had the holiday of a lifetime. Pepo and his staff are very friendly and incredibly helpful - nothing is too much trouble, and the breakfasts are great. The lodge is out of the...

If you're seeking a unique opportunity to experience the richness of Costa Rica and all that the southern Caribbean coast has to offer, La Kukula Lodge can not be beat. Our family of four from Seattle (including our 16 and 18-year old boys) just returned from a week-plus stay at La Kukula Lodge. We stayed in the Casa Kukula and...

Some friends and I recently went to Puerto Viejo for tourism. We looked for many hotels near the area and finally chose La Kukula Lodge. The place is owned by a spanish couple: polite, thoughtful and very keen on helping their guests. The hotel itself is very, very authentic. It's surrounded by high trees where you can spot sloths or...

I am sure that this place is perfekt when the weather is sunny and windless. We were there in the end of november and it was raining a lot in the night. I must say that the place needed a "facelift". Especially til kitchen utensils, the beds (one with ants) and the lamps witch were black because of mold. Of...

Delicious breakfast with home made Bread and jam, good coffee, fresh juice and other options you can choose from the menu. Very nice and clean room. Friendly people! We had fun with searching for animals together that live arround the house. This place is 10 minutes driving from viejo centre. We also visited the Ara project which is close by...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
La Kukula Lodge is situated in Playa Chiquita/ Puerto Viejo, next to Refugio de Vida Silvestre de Gandoca-Manzanillo and Cahuita N.P.Built in 2008, La Kukula Lodge follows the principles of sustainable architecture and only plantation wood (teak) has been used in its construction. With its tropical-contemporary style, the bungalows blend naturally with the wooded surroundings: an ideal location to enjoy the flora and fauna the region has to offer. A simple path system running through the garden links each bungalow, the “rancho-bar” and the swimming pool. There are only 8 rooms available, all are very spacious and airy, with their own deck, fans, bathrooms and hot water from a hybrid solar/electric system. All rooms have fantastic views from private terraces onto the sylvan garden. ... more   less
