Detailed Reviews
I do no more than about 4 or 5 Trip advisor reviews a year intending to flag up places that really warrant notice from people who would otherwise never be aware of attractive possibilities for them. Worldwide top or bottom of the market it has to be special for me to do a review of whats actually available for visitors if they want it.
I did not stay at this campsite but was intermittently engaged staying at the Playa Cacao beach (business and pleasure) including in the house next door to it over a period covering 3 or so years and have personal knowledge of how the camp site has developed.
The below information is current as at June 2023.
This is a small campsite in the grounds of a private ocean side house at the tiny beachside village of Playa Cacao close to Golfito. Verdant vegetation on one side and a long beach overlooking the lagoon crossing to Golfito on the other.
The location and size of the site provides a unique Costa Rican garden/beach experience without a great performance to get or stay there. It is budget value site and a must visit for camping backpackers exploring the region.
The road from Golfito to Playa Cacao ends at the beach where there is limited free public parking. The camp site is a short 5 minute walk to the left along the beach path past a few beachfront houses (and a small restaurant serviced by boat taxi from Golfito).
Its the penultimate plot of the short residential house ribbon overlooking the Golfito bay with uninterrupted views of Golfito and the new marina a mile or so away. There is only one private house further up the beach from the site before the jungle takes over and there is little through traffic to disturb campers.
Sit at the fire and watch boats pass going to and from Golfito across the bay to the left. The Ocean bay extends to the right out to sea with spectacular sunrises and sunsets over the hills. Fish, paddleboard, swim and cook from the site.
An ideal place for an economical laid back low pressure break with water taxis available to and from the small port of Golfito . It is the best of a basic campsite with all the necessities on hand to enjoy as much or little of the ecological Costa Rican experience as you want. Monkeys and birds overhead in the trees, fish in the sea. Walk in the jungle or along the largely unpaved Golfito track. Do it quietly at dawn or dusk and you even have the possibility of seeing a Jaguar.
The owner lives in a house on the site and is available to help and advise as needed . Both fluent English and Spanish is spoken. The photographs give a good idea of the location
