The lodge feels like it's deep in the rainforest. The rooms, the restaurant and the swimming pool were fantastic - the best on my two week trip. Stylish and high quality. As the lodge is quite small you can never feel crowded there. The restaurant food was very good. A fer de lance snake was on the grounds and the staff took care to let us know where it was and even to check for me that it hadn't moved closer to the pool when I wanted to go there to swim. I appreciated the story of the place, which I learned from a movie, but I also appreciated it as a great boutique hotel
Fantastic place with basic but comfortable rooms, lovely staff and food. Has a nice swimming pool to relax in . The main building had bats roosting in it. For nature lovers it’s paradise. Lovely garden with a pond with resident caymans. Loads of birds around especially hummingbirds. We had Acoutis wandering past our room!
The hotel area is really nice and the staff were amazing but the meals let the hotel down. There is very limited choice with set meals for all so if you are a fussy eater then bring something with you, the meals are also very small. The bar is extremely expensive with cocktails at 10 dollars each, water is the same price as beer. The night walk was good but only lasted around a hour and at 20 dollars a person they certainly make their money here. You are also restricted to where you can go which makes sense as some dangerous animals nearby but limits what you can do on your free time when not on any trips. Overall a nice enough hotel but expensive all round.
Lovely setting in the middle of the rainforest. The rooms are well designed and the staff friendly. Food is excellent but a set menu is the only offer without any other choice. A really nice plane to stay and relax.
This was our fourth stay at Esquinas, and it is as wonderful as ever. Our previous trips have been birdwatching trips, but this was a trip with our daughter, her husband, and her family. We wanted to share this special place with our grandchildren, ages 12 and 8. It was a favorite place on our trip for us all. Fernando shared information regarding birds, and Julia was patient and caring, sharing knowledge and making sure the children had great wildlife sightings. The rooms are comfortable, the lodge is a pleasant place to read, play a game or watch wildlife, and the food was delicious. We highly recommend a visit to Esquinas, whether you are a serious birdwatcher or a lover of wildlife.
Visited as part of a tour and of the 6 places we visited this was probably my favourite. Beautiful flower- filled gardens and several trails. The approach road is amazing for birds and I spent many happy hours walking it. A tayra was regularly seen in the gardens. Cabins were adequate and food was good. One night after a terrific thunderstorm all lights went out, but the staff must be well prepared and still managed to cook us a nice candlelit meal.
We stayed for three nights, exploring the trails on our own and with a guide, and going on the mangrove tour (very recommended!). Grounds are well-kept, with a lagoon and a bird-feeder that is the focus of amazing animal activity -- caimans in the lagoon, countless birds (including a heron successfully fishing), and even a tayra. The cabins are clean and functional, with ample electric outlets. Nice pool for cooling off in the afternoon. Only reservation is that there was no choice for the lunch or dinner meals.
Julia greeted us upon arrival and throughout our four days was very generous with her time, care and knowledge. She, her husband, and the tour guide / bar tender Kevin, are all very knowledgeable about the abundance of animal and plant life on and near the site - offering nearby access and tours of a biodiverse secondary rainforest; they are also able to communicate a very genuine passion for ecology and commitment to sustainability. They are on-hand to share their experiences and recommendations which enriched our time with them, for example asking as we relaxed in the dining area if we would like to see the fer-de-lance that was making its way across the path (yes, we would!). Julia also stood by me, quietly and unobtrusively identifying the array of birds I was observing, as she could detect that I was very interested in bird-watching and photography but much less of an expert than she is! I am a vegetarian while my husband is a meat-eater: we were served three meals per day on a set menu, thoughtfully curated, which were all delicious and very satisfying. Fruit juices, soups and desserts were different each time and dishes were likewise varied and flavourful, introducing us to new local ingredients. Coffee was freely available upon request. I celebrated my birthday while we were there, and the chef served me a delicious cake made from local chocolate. There is a bird trail that you can self-guide along. It is well-kept and clearly sign-posted, affording plenty of opportunities to spot a variety of ferns, hummingbirds, birds and mammals (my husband and I are still disputing whether it was a jaguarundi or tayra that we glimpsed one morning!). Work is underway on more trails. We didn't do the night tour, but fellow guests said it was wonderful - they were treated to several spiders, frogs and snakes. From the dining area, we were able to observe interesting behaviour from the resident caimans, basilisks, iguanas, great curassows, agoutis among others as well as plenty of bird-life drawn to the palm trees and heliconias etc. The pool was very refreshing after our walks; the room was spacious, clean and quiet and in a beautiful setting. The room didn't have WiFi, which we didn't mind as it was available at reception and the dining area (enough for us to follow England's progress in the European Championship football). We spent 5 very happy weeks in Costa Rica, but our time at Esquinas Rainforest Lodge stands out as being particularly memorable and special. We felt very well cared for - we learnt so much, ate so much, observed so much, experienced so much while also feeling very rested, invigorated and better connected with nature and ourselves. This is down to a very well-run lodge: Julia is totally committed - to her team, to her guests, to all the wildlife - and is very talented at what she does. I felt like we were treated to a bespoke experience that was also in balance with the surrounding wildlife and culture. We would gladly return.…
A wonderful lodge surrounded by incredible nature (jungel)really super nice maganger Julia,i felt very welcome there and she was so helpful and friendly, the food was great and the location (bungalow, pool, ambiente) sooooo soo great, super clean and such a special place in the mittel of the jungel! For all nature lovers so highly recommendet. A really special place.
You're cordially welcomed by the manager (Julia) upon arrival and shown around the area. It's a big place but cabins are built in such a way that it gives you a nice sense of privacy. The cabins are really neat : spotlessly clean, spacious and equipped with all modern comfort. And birds and agoutis, lizards and basilisk show up right at your porch. The meals are fingerlicking good. Not a cheap place but worth every cent.
