You can find Rancho Burica where the bad road ends and the good life begins. We are in Punta Banco, a beautiful beach town on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Rancho Burica is a piece of paradise with beach front cabinas, a yoga deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a wave out front for the surfers among us. Set in the lush jungle, surrounded by animals and our very own garden waterfall. Rancho Burica offers you great hospitality, peace, quiet and beautiful surroundings.

This is probably what Costa Rica looked like 20 years ago....
Almost in Panama, right on the beach is Rancho Burica. Surrounding it nothing but nature, waves and one dirt road that leads there. If you're looking for relaxation, surfing and just getting away from everything - that's the place you want to go!
Breakfast is included in the room price, and changes every day. I would highly recommend getting dinner as well which will be prepped by one of the local ladies working there for years. The garden offers up not only great hammocks for a midday nap but also it's own waterfall for that post-surf shower. Board rental is available and the current caretakers, Tanya and Richard, will put a lot of love and care into making sure you've got everything you need. Wifi is good and fast, showers even come with warm water and the coconuts are alwaya fresh.
It's a dream place, and I highly recommend it!

Rancho Burica has all the elements of an extremely relaxed vacation: beautiful nature, stunning empty beaches, friendly locals, great food and comfortable housing.
Our stay here was the highlight of our trip through Costa Rica. The hosts, Marthe and Jonne, are wonderful. There’s loads of fun activities from surfing, boat trips, horse riding along the beach towards Panama and relaxing yoga on a unique deck high in the jungle.
Loads of wildlife, whales, toecans and sloths. Our girls cried when we had to leave after 10 days in this small piece of paradise

Rancho Burica is a very nice place in a quiet and secluded area of Costa Rica. The beautiful location combined with good surf nearby make it good place for surfers. A good wave breaks on the doorstep and a short drive away there is a world-class wave (Pavones).
What is beautiful about this stay? It is located by the sea and surrounded by nature. There are daily hummingbirds and other beautiful birds to see. Plenty of other animals also show or make themselves heard. Occasionally there are parrots around and with any luck you will see whales or turtles.
There is a waterfall on site and there are places to watch the surf or enjoy the sunset while enjoying a cup of coffee or a beer. The host Tanya and Richard have made it very much to my liking and I stayed longer because everything was just fine. There is daily tasty and healthy cooking and if you want you can also take yoga lessons. So there is plenty to discover and experience, but you can also relax with a book. I will definitely be back!

Superb relaxed place if you want to surf and/or chill. Private surfspot in front of the garden. Great left with a nice channel to go out. Waterfall in the garden to wash of the salt. Great hosts with tips, yoga and very nice food prepared by the cooks. You can even see turtles and whales from the deck.

What a place! If you're looking for a true Costa Rica experience this is the place to be! Amazing staff, serene location and great food.
Although literally at the end of the road there is no shortage of things to do from surfing, to horseback riding to hiking. The turtle project they've got going there is unreal and they're more than happy to have you help out.
Definitely not my last time at Rancho Burica!

Some places will stick with you forever. During traveling you always hope to find a place where you plan to stay a couple of days, but if you let them, could stay there for weeks.
This for me is one of them.
I visited the rancho at the end of my two months trip. During this trip I was hoping to find a place where I could stick a bit longer then a couple of days. A holiday in a holiday. I travelled in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, but did’t found a place that grabbed my attention. Sure, if found beautiful places with great waves and people. But somehow my attention faded away after a couple of days. I wasn't planning to go back in Costa Rica because of the prices there, but my flight was from Panama city so I needed an overlay. Through word-to-mouth I discovered the rancho in Pavanos and choose to stay there for my last 6 days.
Now looking back. This was for me the place that I was hoping to find.
Rancho Burica is literally located at the end of a road. It’s is easy to get there. I travelled all the way from San juan Nicaragua to the Ranch in 1,5 day. It was a long journey with in night in Golfito, but i wanted to go south as soon as possible. The ranch itself is right on the beach with an own beach break in front. So for the surfers, vision this: Easy pushing waves (when the tides are right), middle in the jungle, no locals AND not more then the visitors of the rancho in the water. For me, after been surfing in Puerto Viejo, Santa Theresa, Popoyo, Hermosa etc was an bless. I could really train my surf there and it felt like I was surfing with my friends. Btw they have enough boards for every taste.
I slept in the dormitory which consist of 8 beds. I was there in the low season so just had to share the dorm with two other guys. Slept like a baby after a good day of surfing especially with the sound of the waves on the background and in the morning the monkeys. Depending on the tides, you can do a morning session and afternoon one. I choose the backpackers deal. Did means $35 for a bed, breakfast and dinner. Lunch is $5 dollar extra and the board are 10 bucks. Not as cheap as in Nicaragua, but the food quality is really good and it’s still Costa Rica ;-). They do family style breakfast and dinner.
For the none surfers. I did a (4h) horse back riding tour. It was my first experience doing this and I didn’t expect to have so much fun. The horses where well fed and trained properly. this means for me as a rookie, I could climb muddy and steep hills (also descent ;)), galloping and experience the jungle from a horse. I saw a really poisonous snake, which killed by our guide Wilbert, two different types of monkeys, sloths and blue butterflys. The trip was amazing. Would do it again with the blink of an eye.
So. I could go on and one. But the for me the key is: If you want a great place to chill, surf enjoy your book, get sick of grumpy locals, want to practice your surf technique, meet great people and feel the warmth of the hosts Marijn en Femke. Go there and enjoy.
This place I build with love, not to make any profit. As it should be.

Before I begin, let me just say the end result of this trip was one of the best ever. Good friends, great waves, and so much laughter. All of this outweighed the cons of Rancho Burica. There are definitely nicer places to stay, but if you don’t mind glamping this place will suit you just fine.
The Good- The flora and fauna is beautiful. The are macaques, toucans, sloths, monkeys, and iguanas. The beach is good for walking. The tide pools are fun to lounge in at low tide. There are waves for surfing right out front (unless a big swell comes through and it closes out- or the local Dutch chick gives you grief for surfing her wave ). The yoga loft is really cool. The beach palapa is nice for respite from the sun and a great place to drink a cold beer. The outdoor kitchen/dining hall is nice and I like how the food was served family style. Lots of vegetables which I wasn’t expecting. (although there were times, mostly the pre-surf breakfast when there wasn’t enough fruit to go around). If there are muffins or banana bread for sale, buy them- they are delicious! The horse back ride from their property is epic- I could have never seen that part of Costa without being on a horse.
The Bad- the rooms are hot, so very hot. The best case sleeping scenario is a cold shower before bed and two fans aimed on you all night long- but that’s a pipe dream. You are lucky if you get one fan. Our friends had the top floor and were able to keep their doors open at night. We couldn’t do this due to venomous snakes and crabs that could cruise right into our room. Ceiling fans would make a big difference in this place. Also, the beds and sheets seem old, so old. Like the mattresses or foam have been around for 30 years. It was not comfortable sleeping even with how exhausted we all were. And the geckos kept pooping on our bed! It turned to comedy at 3am. It’s feral. Take it or leave it. I’m too old for it. That I now know. At least we were lucky to have a room with an en suite bathroom. Other folks had to walk outside their units to use a bathroom and shower. Not what I would want to do in the middle of the night in the jungle! My other complaint would have to do with alcohol. One day they managers gave us grief about us having our own liquor- said we had to buy it there- at “the resort.” Buyer beware- they charge you 2.50 for the soda and then 3.50 for the shot, so $6 for a rum and coke! The managers, while nice and even funny sometimes, didn’t seem that interested in actually dealing with guests.
The Ugly- Our shower stopped draining about half way through the week. It flooded the bathroom. It never got fixed. A request to have our trash can changed (you have to put the TP in the trash) wasn’t attended to until 5 hours or so after the ask- and then only after management saw me taking the trash- which I didn’t mind doing, but I didn’t know where to get a new bag.

Rancho Burica is an awesome place to stay! The people are great, the food is amazing and the surf is good (no crowds!). The waterfall is nice to cool down and the yoga platform overlooking the ocean is great to get the body ready for the next surfsession! I visited the place end November and we saw loads of baby turtles making their way to the water. No mother turtles around that time of the year anymore, have to come back for that next year :)

I was doing a surf/yoga camp with a group of canadian from Quebec and american. I was lucky to share one of the new room with 2 other members of the group and we each had a single bed. We had a shower and a bathroom in our room and it was really nice! Most of the other room doesn't have it but then again, it's not the end of the world because the land is amazingly beautifull!!!
Breakfast is included and really fresh & good! For extra $, you can also eat overthere for diner and then again, the food was really great!
There's a lot of people coming from Netherlands because the owners are from there. Believe me, I love being surounded by other nationalities. I don't know if it's a cultural difference but we, the ''americans'', felt we where the ''outsiders'' and that we didn't belong there! The area where we eat is small and we all eat at the same time so i tought it would be more friendly.
Also, there's a amazing patio where you could watch the sunset. We where a group of 9 and for one night, it would have been fun to watch it all togheter. The thing is that if you where not ''fast enough'' to get there, the owners and there friends would always be there so you would have to be sit in the ''backrow'' to watch to sunset of go somewhere else. We also did a sunset yoga session next to it and they where smoking cigarettes next to us. I know it's outside, it's a free country but as you can imagine, with deep breathing, it's not so great and relaxing.
Greatfully, Jord and Femke (the owner at that time that we saw the 1st night and the last day) and Simone where really nice and helfull and didn't made us feel that we didn't belong there. Thanks to you guys. Pura Vida!
Beautifull place, a few nice people and a really great cook but no... I wouldn't go back there because I didn't feel welcome and we felt we where bodering some of the owners and there friends even if we were costumers and we did pay.

Situated at Punta Banco, Ranco Burica has the best accomodation spot along the coast! Really nice and clean rooms, "private" surfspot at 2 meters walk with perfect waves (beginners and advanced) and great family style meals and vibe (thanks to the couple managing the place). Horseback riding is a must along the beach and the Indian reserve nearby. The sound of howler monkies in the morning, the beach during the day and the excellent sunset deck at night was perfect to relax. Also the turtle project has been a success over the years and worth visiting.
Going there by car is easiest although there is a daily bus. Come prepared with cash as there is no bank in the area.
We enjoyed it very much!
