We stayed here for 4 days and had an amazing time & jungle experience! Since it was 'Semana Santa', everything else was full booked, except Ka'Kau. We booked only one night and planned to go further the day after.
We were only one hour at the cabina's and immediately changed our booking to a stay of 4 nights!!
This place is ENCREDIBLE! You're litterally in the middle of the jungle, parrots & toekans fly over, howler monkeys wake you up....
This is only the beginning, the food Dennis served us was more than incredible! We're travelling for 4 months now and still we tink about the great food he served us!
Don't doubt to stay in this place!! Do read the "how to get here"-instructions!!

To the German reviewer: if you book a place that's called 'Jungle cabinas' and which is located in a part of a rainforest and it actually is RAINYseason, It's kind of obvious it might rain and things get wet, paths get muddy... Next time stay @ home!

I am NOT a friend of the owners, I do NOT get paid to write this! I just really loved this place and it's been one of the best experiences in Central-America I had...

I stayed here one night on a recent journey through the South of Costa Rica. If I had it to do over again I would have spent several days there. Our host, Bart, was incredible. He's a great cook, conversationalist and even helped carry a backpack out of the jungle when we left.

The cabins are open so during the rainy season it does get quite humid though if it were enclosed you wouldn't have the joy of waking up to the sound of monkeys just outside the cabin wrestling each other over the fruit in the nearby mango tree.

If you want to get off the grid and have a unique experience in the jungle I say this is the place for you.

The place is amazing, in the pure jungle...I had 3 days only sitting in my cabina, looking at the jungle, listening to it. If there's a place I will always be back is here. And Dennis is a really friendly and nice, a very good boy, and a very good cooker! Everything was perfect for us! Highly recommended

I have nothing but wonderful things to say after my 3 day stay at the Ka'Kau Jungle Cabinas. It was an enchanting and memorable experience, and one that I would highly recommend to anyone who appreciates and admires nature. The owner has created a beautiful place for people to view the jungle and its flora and fauna. You can tell a lot of thought has been put into positioning the cabinas for maximum effect and each cabina offers a slightly different but equally spectacular view of your surroundings. One of my more memorable experiences was watching families of 2 different types of monkeys from my balcony! The other truly impressive aspect of Ka'Kau was how amazing the food was. I opted to eat dinner there and it was always delicious, well seasoned, and money well spent. In general I thought the pricing for everything (the lodging w/ breakfast and the dinner) was a bargain and I left feeling like I got more than what I paid for. I appreciated that the pricing made this wonderful experience accessible to everyone. Overall I would highly the Ka'Kau Cabinas for anyone who is looking for a tranquil place to unplug and get up close and personal with the untamed jungle. The owner has created an atmosphere where its very easy to relax and unwind. When I left I felt super tranquil and that I had just experienced something that was completely unique and I was actually sad to go. In my mind those are all the signs of a good vacation! (PS I am an avid bird watcher and there are some interesting species here such as Riverside Wren, Scarlet Macaw, and Chestnut Backed Antbird)

My wife Nienke and me visited Dennis and Bart at their jungle cabinas in february 2013.
We were immediately awestruck by the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. When Bart picked is up at the airport (by boat! They don't say it on their website yet but they do this for everyone that comes to stay with them. It's so cool to be on that boat and cruise the little gulf where Playa Cacao is situated) we were very, very impressed with the surroundings.
There are four beautiful cabinas there.
Here's what you should NOT expect: Airconditioning. Shiny luxury. Crowds. Here's what you will encounter: the most beautiful jungle scenery you will ever see. Lots of wildlife. Friendly people all around.
When we were there we stayed in cabina Gulfo. It was cosy, and had an amazing view of the jungle. All four cabinas are situated so they offer great views, and each cabina is totally different than the other. Because you're staying smack dab in the middle of the jungle, and the cabinas have practically no walls, you feel as if you're camping in the jungle - while lying in a nice soft bed!
But the coolest thing about Ka'Kau is the friendliness of the place. Bart and Dennis are both really generous hosts, and Dennis is an excellent chef as well.
So, if you are a luxury buff and are afraid of anything resembling wildlife, don't go to this place. If you are the adventurous type and want to go where few others have gone before - and still feel right at home!- then Ka'Kau is most definitely the place to be.
And dead cheap too. One thing though: this is tropical rainforest we're talking about here. If you bring expensive electronics, be sure to keep them dry.

This place is absolutely amazing! Yes you have to love being in the jungle but if you do, it's great! We were glad we booked some nights here since we didn't have time or money to go to Corcovado. And we think it's just as good! The cabins look very good and all have different views or decks to watch the wildlife. We were welcomed by Bart, one of the owners, and he made us feel like home. Bart took us on a morning jungle hike as well and served us delicious breakfast after. So we had a great time and I recommend staying a couple of nights, because if you're there for the wildlife you will definitely see a lot!!
For us, there was nothing we really didn't like. Just be prepared you have to walk up the hill, it's in the middle of the jungle, it's somewhat primitive and it can rain really hard, which all was no problem for us and part of the experience.
One tip to get there: let the bus or taxidriver drop you of at the busstop for playa cacao and take the boat. There's one 88 year old guy with a small boat who will do this for 1000 colones per person. Or there's a restaurant at Playa Cacao who will do this for free if you eat and/or drink at their restaurant after (great food). Others are a little bit more expensive. Just wait until they show up or ask one of the locals who know or who can call one of them.

Been around the world but this place, i think, is one of our favorites!
It's located right up in the jungle. The only noise you'll hear is that of the jungle. Fruit growing everywhere and animals will pass your open cabin anytime.... It's a great place to explore the jungle and go kayaking to secluded beaches. Maybe you'll catch a fish or two.
When we arrived in Golfito we took a taxiboat to lola's bar at playa cacao. Bart was waiting there there for us. It was nice just to take of our backpacks and have a nice cold beer!
To get to the jungle cabinas....it's a nice hike up the mountain through the jungle, crossing a small river. Arriving there was amazing!!!!!!!
Beatifull wooden cabinas with even more beautifull views. You can sit on the deck all day and watch ara's, toucans, eagles, white faced monkeys, howlers, butterflies pass by. Or you can go exploring and see much more.
We stayed there in 2011 an 2013 and we will certanly go there again!!!

We stayed two nights at the Ka'Kau Jungle Cabinas, but could have stayed much longer! Denis was a great host and made our stay unforgetable. You will wake up by the sounds of birds and monkeys and enjoy the best jungle breakfast you will ever eat. Everything is kept nice and tidy. If you like adventure, this is a must for you!

We didn't plan to stay here but saw the sign on the beach so we climbed up the mountain to have a look and hey what a place! Sure you need to climb up for 20 minutes as this is really off the beaten track but the set up is a true delight. The rooms are basic with a table and benches, fresh water is provided in each room and you need to share the bathroom. We were lucky to stay in the family cabin which has a first floor area to chill out in.The double bed has a mosquito net, there are no windows so you are in direct contact with the jungle which i loved. The owner is a Dutch chef so his food is very tasty, also for vegetarians. He is a very happy easy going guy(who wouldn't be in this enviroment!) and loves his music and singing! There are a couple of great views nearby of the gulf and a fair amount of wildlife, we were lucky to see a family of wild boar nearby as the night was coming in. Regrettably we had to leave the next day but i would go back without a doubt and for longer!!

Not your run-of-the-mill joint. Lots of sweat equity -- and it shows. Capuchin monkeys swinging branch to branch at breakfast? What’s not to love? But as fabulous as that was, I'll probably remember my long conversations/discussions/agreeings-to-disagree with the domesticated animal (that is, the human running the place) more than my mere glimpses of the ones in the wild.

"All the rooms are great. Book with plenty of time ahead so you can arrange the details of getting to the cabinas from Playa Cacao. It isn't a difficult walk but you are following a path through the jungle for 600 meters so a little instruction beforehand will make finding the cabinas easier."
