This is more of a hiking lodge. Accommodation was very simple, though reasonably clean. We had dinner which was cooked on site, no choice, but it was very tasty. We were very disappointed in Drake Bay itself, it had very little to offer us, more a hippy place, and we only stayed one night instead of the two we had booked.
It has been a month since I cancelled using the free cancellation on Booking.com and after over a dozen emails with Booking.com and the lodge and one call to the owner in Prague, they still have not refunded my 1/2 payment and appear to be completely unable to do so despite acknowledging that I should receive the refund. This is the worst experience I have ever had with trying to get a refund. This place should not be in business.
Anyone remember that song? This is what I'd call an Ecolodge. It has the basics in a very remote area. The first compelling thing is the view from the ingeniously-designed main building with two outward-facing terraces. Mesmerizing to just stare out. The morning fly-by of endangered scarlet macaw parrots is remarkable and unforgettable. The manager is an eccentric Czech man and his wife, who were recently arrived. Well-meaning, but not professional. For example, I needed a receipt for my stay, which should not be too much to expect, but it never was provided. The local staff member, Andy, is a very nice guy, speaks decent English and is local, so can help point you in the right direction for activities. If you are there at the right time, that should include a turtle walk with the local non-profit (separately reviewed). The only price we were quoted (direct with the hotel) included meals and was per person, but looks like you can do better online for the room alone. Food is "hearty" prepared in an open kitchen. No menu choice except how you want your eggs in the morning. Chef is also very nice, but has a limited range of ingredients to work with, given the location. Beers $5 US. Also no other alternative place to eat except the hotel property next door; we poked in but did not feel welcome and didn't try. They don't seem to be interested in outside business.…

My wife and I went here on my honeymoon. We have nothing but good things to say about the place. It is a special experience to sleep in the jungle. In addition, Roman and the staff (who where great) did everything they could to make us feel welcome and at home. We saw lots of unique flora and fauna and highly recommend traveling into Corcovado National Park. Great food, great coffee, great people.. Not much else you could ask for! Thanks for everything, we hope to go back one day.
This is a bit of a placeholder review until I get some time to give my full review on the place. Highly recommend staying here if you are looking to be immersed into a remote, jungle B&B experience. Waking up and falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle was a truly refreshing way to start and end our days here. The stellar vibes from the staff only sweeten the experience, as they are down-to-earth, good people. They went above and beyond to make our family's stay special - especially since I proposed to my wife on this trip. The beach and jungle experience is incredible, you won't be disappointed. The food is great as well... with many ingredient coming from their garden. I look forward to visiting again some day!
Me and my friend stayed in this hotel for two weeks. We were acommodated in a cabin in the middle of a nature. This hotel is very special for its location. It offers beautifull views on the ocean as well as a great experience beeing in the middle of a jungle. We saw parrots flying in front of the hotel every day as well as humming birds and monkeys who are used to come very close. It has a great access to the sea. The stuff is very nice and profesional and the kitchen is the best we experienced in Costa Rica. You can feel a homey atmospere and you will have troubles leaving. I will totaly visit again. Thank you, pura vida :-)
We spent 5 days at this fabulous place as part of a wildlife photography tour with Backcountry Journeys. It's an hour plus drive on a dirt road with a couple of creek crossings to get to this remote and amazing place. When we made the drive in, it took quite a while, as we were stopping constantly to check out the monkeys, birds, snakes, caimans and other critters that are easily seen from the road. The Inn is perched high on a hillside, with absolutely gorgeous and lush grounds leading down to the road and the black sand beach. We were assigned the "Honeymoon" cabin and it was terrific. Totally open air but very private. The super comfy bed hangs from the rafters and has mosquito netting. Although the days were hot and super humid, at night with a fan blowing we were totally comfortable. We could hear the ocean crashing below. I don't know if I've ever gone to sleep more peacefully or slept better. The bathroom is also open air and has a cool water shower. At first I wondered if I would miss a hot shower. Nope! In the heat and humidity, a cool shower when we returned after a day of hiking and sweating was perfect. In all regards, our room was spotlessly clean. Our group was up at first light for the chance to shoot pictures of scarlet macaws on their morning fly-bys. The open air deck of the Inn is a fabulous place to watch and shoot pictures of the macaws and they occasionally land nearby for a bit of breakfast. We had most of our meals at the Inn, unless we we had a sack lunch out in the field. The food was wonderful, with loads of fresh fruit and vegies creatively prepared. The food is served family style and there was always more than enough to fill the largest appetite. Fresh fruit smoothies were available by request and were superb. The family that runs the kitchen could not be nicer. They worked so hard to provide us with wonderful food and they succeeded brilliantly. After dinner, the hillside below the Inn provided great opportunities for macro shots of frogs, lizards and snakes. Needless to say, we were busy from first light to well after dark and loved every minute. I can't imagine a better place to stay when you explore Corcovado NP and the Osa Peninsula. We travel a great deal and the Lookout Inn is at the very top of memorable experiences!! Thank you to all the staff of the Lookout Inn for making our stay so special!…
The Lookout Inn is not for everyone, it is simplistic and remote. It is a workout getting to your cabanas because it is built into the side of a hill and the cabanas are on different levels. You must have a degree of fitness to stay in several of the rooms. The rooms are open to the environment and a small fan in a canopied bed. But if you came to an Eco Lodge in the jungle with expectations of air conditioning and TV you’ve missed the point. It is completely about the experience and Roman & his staff delivers. The rooms are clean, the viewing decks are spotless, the hospitality is top notch. Cold beverages await after a long jungle hike. It is hard not to fall in love with this Inn. The ocean never lets you forget it is near. Steady waves crash both day and night. Birds sing, Howler Monkeys howl in the distance and leaf cutter ants traipse through the trees. Iguanas and Basilisks are plentiful. The highlight are the Macaws. scarlet Macaws make their presence known with loud squats and amazing colors. They feed from the trees and come to the observation decks for seeds. They are amazing. I highly recommend this adventure! …
I was part of a photography group that spent eight nights on the Osa Peninsula; we stayed in three different lodges, and compared to the other two, this one was just OK. The food is excellent, and the location is great for seeing scarlet macaws. We were not aware of much other wildlife watching beyond the macaws, though you can walk a mile along the beach to a lagoon (Laguna Peje Perrito), which in the mornings had a tiger heron, some roseate spoonbills, jacana, and a crested caracara, among other birds. I had more trouble than some of the others in our group in dealing with the walk to the lagoon in the high heat and humidity, and I was grateful to the owner for sending someone in a truck to get me and save me the walk back. The next day, they provided rides to and from the lagoon for several of us who were struggling with the temperatures. We were very appreciative. The accommodations were fairly basic: I stayed in the Jungle Hut, which had a plank floor, some wooden shelving and drawers, and one wall open to the outside. It had enough electricity for a small fan over the bed and a light over the sink in the bathroom; there were no other lights and no electrical outlets in the room. (You could charge your camera batteries and other devices at a solar-powered station in the main lodge during daylight hours, which worked out fine.) The outdoor shower was cold water only. I don't say these things to complain, just to explain why I describe the accommodations as "basic." There was a mixup about the rooms upon our arrival, and the owner could have been more discreet and more pleasant in resolving the disagreement with our trip leader, rather than arguing with him in front of all of us. Later I shared a concern about the smell of the showers in one of the rooms and was met with a somewhat dismissive comment about how "it's jungle water." We had to insist that they look into it, and they found that there was indeed a problem with the cistern serving that room—and they fixed it. Having just stayed at Bosque del Cabo, where all of the staff knew your name and went out of their way to be cheerful and chat with us, we didn't quite get the same "warm fuzzy" feeling at Lookout Inn. Some of the staff seemed almost oblivious to our presence. But others were very friendly, and overall we had an adequate stay.…
