Detailed Reviews
Parrot Bay Village is an an experience that calls you back for more.
If you want neon signs, swim-up bars in pools, and crowds of people competing for spots in the sun ........do not go to Parrot Bay.
If you want to feel like a friend of the family, have beaches to yourself, have access to world class fishing, meals cooked to order, know the staff in a day or two, associate with the most interesting guests, then this the place.
I've recently discovered PBV and have been fortunate to have made 2 visits. My wife and I were there in 2005 for fishing, and several side trips into the rainforest, and I returned with 3 fishing friends in 2006...... both trips have only made me want to go back for more.
The weather has always been in the 80's (F) and sunny, the cabinas are immaculate and set in a tropical garden, the open-air restaurant/bar is always comfortable, and the natural surroundings can surprise you with a bonus; scarlet macaws, too many birds to mention, igaunas, & monkeys.
I'm still trying to figure out why I've brought bug spray both visits and have never used it? We've hiked the rainforest, taken a horseback trip into the mountains, walked the beach in the evening, walked back into the mangroves to look for cayman ..... and have not seen any nuisance bugs!!!
Bottom line, If you like the big chain hotels this is not for you, if you enjoy the "real deal" with top of the line service, you have to visit Parrot Bay Village.

We were at a wedding party this May that took place at the Iquana Lodge. The closest rooms available were at The Parrot. It was perfect for us. We had the biggest cabina with a seperate bedroom and big sleeping loft. It had the unheard of luxury, air conditioning that worked very well. Included breakfast was served in the oper air bar overlooking the beach. Staff was friendly and attentive.

A little bit outside the bustling town centre, we were lucky to run into Parrot Bay Village. Extremely nice reception, good cottage, good value, an accurately tended garden; just at the beach. The almond tree ensures visits from the great Scarlet Macaws.
Restaurants can be easily reached on foot.

We had the impression of being a nuisance when we arrived, the questions were inappropriate. By far the worst accommodation in Costa Rica during our 2 and a half week traveling stay where we met many fabulous people.
The owner takes great pleasure in terrorizing his customers with distressing stories and ruins your stay. He feeds off your fear in a rather unhealthy way and makes fun of you. If you want a safe place, I don't recommend it. Go your way

We found Parrot Bay Village by chance as Puerto Jimenez was the place we needed to stop (sun going down) for the night. Parrots were coming in to roost for the night in pairs, which was a nice touch to the evening. We drove around town looking at the various accommodations, and none of them looked very inviting- of course harder to say in the dark- but we found a long, dark path that lead to Parrot Bay Village and, though it seemed deserted we found a couple of guys working in the restaurant who showed us some of the rooms that were available. The rooms were charming, lots of wood and fresh flowers, with balconies. The guys, whom we came to know as Kerly (Kayr-r-ly) and Christian, got us settled into a very nice room, and then made us some snacks and drinks at the bar. They are very friendly and warm and made us feel immediately at home. Later, the kids found a nature trail near the parking lot (marked with a sign) which lead into a swamp. With flashlights we saw several fat crocodiles and about 100 roosting egrets all clacking and chattering at our arrival. That night we slept like kings in very comfortable beds, and awoke at dawn to the sounds of mackaws and parrots circling overhead. Breakfast (included in price) was delicious, and once again we had the pleasure of Christian and Kerly's company. Fruit-loaded feeders are set up around the open air restaurant to attract many species of birds. The grounds of Parrot Bay village feature numerous fruiting and flowering plants which attract birds and butterflies. The bay is only 100 or so feet from the porch of the restaurant, so you can beach comb while your food is being prepared, or watch the fishing boats go out for the morning. Our girls (10 and 14) picked a coconut from a tree and Kerly took extra time after his shift to open it for them. The atmosphere of this hotel could be described as "comfortable and relaxed friendliness". Mary, the day manager, is also warm and cheerful. We would love to visit this place again.

Just wanted to share my experience of Parrott Bay in the form of a letter I wrote to them - but despite having e-mailed it a few times and faxing it as well, I have not even received a reply!
Good Afternoon,
We have now returned from Costa Rica and I would like to express how unhappy
we are at the 'service' we received at your hotel.
We were picked up as arranged from the airport, but instead of the Welcome Drink the rate was supposed to include, on arrival we were told that we
would not be getting breakfast, as the restaurant would be closed. This also meant that instead of eating our other meals at the restaurant, as we had
planned to do, we would be forced to go out for our meals.
Although a small rebate was offered to compensate for the breakfast, this was decidedly nsatisfactory, but worse was to come. It was then mentioned that the bar was closed too, so no chance of a cold beer. The young lady then added that maintenance men were working on the cabins, but she would ask them to stop
when we were in our cabin so it would not be too noisy and moreover, she was just about to leave the premises in the next hour, so if we could let her
know within the next 30 minutes of any tours we may want, otherwise she would not be there!
At this point I asked if any other guests were staying, and she said no. I asked if anyone was at the hotel if we needed anything, and she mentioned
that the maintenance men were about.
To sum up then, no restaurant, no bar, no staff, no guests, maintenance being carried out-in effect, and she had to agree with this, you were closed, but you did not have the courtesy to advise us of this before our arrival.
Your web site states-
Parrot Bay Village is full service, soup to nuts.
Why Choose Parrot Bay Village as your place to stay and explore Costa Rica?
Personalized service possible due to our size, not too big and not too small. The first class Parrot Bay Village service starts when you land..
Our beautifully appointed private accommodations (cabinas), and great food
This is not what we experienced, but it was what we were led to believe, and
you happily took our credit card details despite non of the above being
available.
That, however was not the end-
We asked the lady in the office to find us alternative accommodation, and she rang around, but it seemed that most places were either closed (and
declared themselves closed) or full. We had been up since 05.00 am to catch our early flight to Puerto Jimenez, and had envisaged that by now we would
be sitting in the gardens, relaxing with a cold drink, and instead we found we had nowhere to stay. The lady eventually said she could get us into Black
Turtle Lodge and put us into a taxi.
On arrival at Black Turtle Lodge, the owner looked surprised to see us, and when I explained that we had been sent over from Parrot Bay Village, she
said she had told the girl there that she had no rooms available! We could not believe that we had been deliberately misled, presumably so that we
would no longer be the responsibility of Parrot Bay.
In the end, tired and frustrated, we managed to extend our stay at Bosque Del Cabo, where we had planned to stay after our 2 nights at Parrot
Bay-thankfully they managed to accommodate us for the 2 earlier nights as well. ''
I had hoped they would acknowledge our e-mail and at least apologise, but I have heard nothing. This was sent on 27th November 2007.

I stayed here upon my arrival with my girlfriend on the Osa back in September 2005. It was the perfect place to arrive at after a long Journey from Ireland to USA and then on to the Connecting flight to Costa Rica.
The cabins were clean, comfortable, spacious and had beautiful views of the garden. The staff were friendly and helpful and the Breakfasts were delicious. The traditional Costa Rican Breakfast was a great start to the day.
I would Definately return to Parrot bay in the very near Future if I have the chance.

For the @100/night range, I would def recommend this hotel for Pt Jim. It's within walking distance of 'downtown', but far enough away to feel private. Each of the 'cabins' are roomy, modern and clean. Also, if you're looking for an excellent guide to Corcovado, ask for William at the bar area or email him directly at [--]. We hired him for the day, and found him invaluable.

We were a tour group of 8 people---2 families of 3 and 2 singles--traveling through Costa Rica. Parrot Bay Village was one of our stops. When we arrived the Reception building was locked and empty and nobody could be found to help us. About 15 minutes later our guide finally found a gardener who said he could let us into our rooms. We were the only guests there. The gardener spoke Spanish so if it had not been for our guide we would have been unable to communicate since my spanish is not that developed.
Our room had a bed on a main floor and 2 beds in a loft. There were two chairs and a desk also in the room.
We got into our room and turned on the air-conditioner which was placed so high in the room we had to get on a chair to reach it. Unfortunately, it had one setting---"Penguin Friendly".
One of the rooms had a broken air-conditioner so the other family of 3 had to move all of their belongings to another room that was apparently not used often because it was dusty and had cob webs.
They could not stay in their original room however, without air it was much too hot.
We had no hot water and no, and I mean no, water pressure. I could have poured out my water bottle and had the same amount of water to use.
A walk around the property revealed tossed beer bottles and odds and ends trash.
But wait, it gets better.
We settle in for the night and find large ants crawling down the walls and on the table. The bed was up against a wall and there were bugs I hadn't seen before crawling on that wall, right where I was supposed to sleep.
I decided I would sleep in the chair. The room was so cold I had to sleep with my raincoat on and two quick dry large towels we had brought draped around me.
I dozed off once but when I woke up I had ants crawling on the arm of my chair. They were also on the table and when I looked over to the bed where my husband was sleeping I noticed part of the sheet was touching the ground and the ants were using it to climb up onto the bed. I woke up my husband. We shook out the sheet but it became apparent that someone had to stay awake to monitor the invasion. Since I was the one who could function the best with minimum sleep I took the hit for the team.
I ended up with more company--the two legged kind-- my son who was in the loft had to come down because it was so hot up there he could not sleep.
Long night! We could not wait to leave. There is an open air area where the gardener and another man served us some eggs and toast before we left but we never saw anyone else, ever.
When we were leaving we found out that the manager is NEVER on-site to deal with any problems. He makes reservations by phone, off-site. So, if you plan to stay there better add to you packing list a copy of "Survival Guide".
My best advice-------Danger, Will Robinson, danger! Do not stay! Do not stay!
