Excellent hotel. Very convenient location. Amenities are worth it. Food is delicious. Pool section is outstanding as well as the restaurant outside. Small shops inside for gifts to be brought home. Shuttle to airport makes it easy on the overall trip.
We are here with a tour. We’ve spent 2 weeks touring round the country and spending the last night here before returning to the UK. We’ve just had dinner. It was the worst meal we’ve had in Costa Rica. The soup was nice but only tepid. The main course was the inevitable rice with chicken and was ok. They had run out of desserts so just had fruit. The waiter brought some red wine. None of our group could drink it as it was turning to vinegar. We asked for fresh but it was only when our tour operator got involved that they brought a fresh bottle. Frankly it was hardly any better. I wouldn’t even cook with it and I wasn’t going to drink it! I don’t expect top wines but they have to be potable! I finished my meal with some Luke warm weak coffee. As we were ready to leave they brought cake out. Too little too late. The rooms are clean and comfortable hence the 3 score. There’s a coffee maker in the room with one pouch of coffee, sugar sachets but no milk/creama. I’m glad it’s just the one night.…
Excellent hotel I highly recommend for all the reasons you can think of. I wish I stayed longer. The look of the place, the bed, the restaurant, a bellhop, airport shuttle, gift shop, multiple restaurant options. I'm really happy I chose this place
Lovely hotel and grounds. The room was clean and beautiful. We had to ask several times for towels and there were no wash cloths available. As many Americans travel here, it would be nice if the hotel supplied wash cloths.
Full-service hotel with clean, comfortable rooms, several restaurants, lovely pool deck. The hotel occupies a hillside with mature trees and good understory plants, attracting many birds. Did not have time, but could also vhave walked down towards river, or grabbed a taxi to nearby La Sabana Park, an eBird hotspot.
We stayed at the Hotel Barcelo San Jose for two nights at the beginning of our two week tour of Costa Rica and one night at the end. The rooms were comfortable and spacious and kept clean. The food in the restaurant was fairly mediocre and at times in short supply, particularly if you arrived towards the end of service. Waiting staff were generally ok in the restaurant, however the internal bar (not pool bar which was fine) didn't open until the evening and the staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. We were on an all inclusive stay, which meant pretty much any drinks should be available but the bar staff didn't want to serve any spirits if he could avoid it. I even saw him hiding bottles under the bar and then saying "we have none". Outside pool is fine with a bar offering drinks and snacks and there is a small garden area to wander around. The hotel is located about half an hour from the airport and approximately 15 minutes from the city centre. I wouldn'tt recommend going to the city centre after dark! Not actually that much to see and even our tour manager said that it's not a nice city (He is Costa Rican) and wouldn't go there unless he had to. The hotel is fine for a first stop after arriving in Costa Rica but best to get out into the countryside where it is much more pleasant and friendly.…
Barcelo is a very nice hotel and nice staff. I liked the bed most. Comfortable and clean. Not too costly either. My Spanish isn't so good and they were helpful. Room was great. Balcony was great. I def would recommend.
Stayed here for two nights (once when we arrived in San Jose and once on our way out of San Jose). The hole premises are nice. The hotel offers two restaurants and a bar, but doesn’t have a lot of places close by to walk too. The rooms are okay..they’re clean but definitely getting a little dated. When we were there on our last night, we noticed the toilet wasn’t working properly and notified the front the desk, they sent someone to take a look at it and the individual claimed it was working fine. We were skeptical that he managed to “fix” it in the two minutes he was there, but it seem to be flushing fine in his presence…fast forward to the morning and the toilets no longer flushing. I wish they would’ve given us a new room as this was not a hassle I wanted to deal with having to catch an early morning flight the next day. The check-in/out process is quick, the bathrooms are very dated, and there’s a decent gift shop on-site for last minute items. The hotel is a 20-25 minute drive to the hotel, so it’s mot THAT close. I would look at other options for next time.…
First we ordered room service, they sent the wrong item and never returned to take our dirty plates. Large area of blood on a pillow in our “clean room” housekeeping never came up with a fresh pillow. Supervisor gave us 2 complimentary drinks at bar but only applied for draft beer or house rum which never of us liked. Bar was dirty. Only 2 seats available, not because it was busy but because there were dirty plates and glasses sitting all over the bar. Then when the bartender finally removed the dirty dishes he only wiped it off with a dry paper towel. No cleaner was used. Pool closed early, 5 pm on a Saturday, since we arrived late afternoon we didn’t even get a chance to enjoy it.
Great pool area, great room - and the best mattress (of several we used on Costa Rica)..a good price available on line....even with the Premium Select room offered.....and good Japanese restaurant on site.
