To begin, one must understand that the city of San Jose is busy. It isn't the cleanest place, there are all kinds of people, many trying to survive and make a buck, and it's not aesthetically pleasing, but it's interesting and worth a day or two of exploring. Hotel Presidente is nestled behind a large gate in a bustling part of town. Once on the hotel premises, one escapes the noise and advances of peddlers, into a lovely haven. The lobby is an eclectic mix of natural elements and quirky furniture. It makes no sense piece by piece, but works together perfectly. The people working at the desk are fantastic. From the time that I booked our room to the minute that we checked out, they were extremely helpful, considerate and so friendly. Service at Hotel Presidente overall -- reception desk, breakfast, house keeping-- is exceptional. Our room was enormous and housed a huge jacuzzi. If you are looking to stay in the Ritz, with Louis XIV furnishings, Occitane bath products and Portuguese linen bedding, do not come here. There are some imperfections at this hotel and some features are a bit dated, however if you want a nice room that is kept very clean, the beds are extremely comfortable (throughout Costa Rica, the beds are harder, which I prefer), the furnishings are minimalistic, but nice and useful, then Hotel Presidente will check all of your boxes. Breakfast was ample and filling: an amalgam of cold foods such as cheese, yogurt, cereals, and some of the best fruit (I couldn't get enough of the pineapple and papaya-- and they have a pineapple puree that is to die for!!!)m as well as warm items including eggs, rice and beans (delicious), bacon, etc. There is plenty of which to choose, and if you cannot find something that you like, they will make it for you, so no one can complain! Finally, the rooftop restaurant and bar was gorgeous, the service impeccable and the food was some of the best we had in Costa Rica (the fruit ceviche and shrimp on polenta were scrumptious!). Hotel Presidente was a gem and we enjoyed every moment that we spent in that hotel.

We stayed three nights. Great location for exploring San Jose. The room was clean and comfortable. There was complementary coffee and the facility to make yourself a herbal tea in reception. We didn’t try the restaurant but the breakfast was excellent. The staff were efficient. Overall we couldn’t fault it.

We were charmed by our brief stay at Hotel Presidente. The downtown San Jose hotel preserves the charm of the sewing machine factory the building once housed and decorated it very tastefully with a great deal of charm. The roof-top restaurant provides a great ambiance to delicious food. The staff are cordial, extremely helpful and friendly. If you're going to San Jose, do not miss staying here.

If you're looking to stay downtown, which I don't think I would do again, I would stay at Hotel Presidente. It's safe and very clean. The 4th floor restaurant is super cool with a great view of the city lights at night. Friendly staff.

Very characterful hotel, and centrally located for all the museums and main sights of San Jose. The hotel provides transfers to/from the airport for $40, which proved invaluable when picking up our hire car - I have to disagree with other reviewers on here, as we drove to the hotel with no issues, and always managed to get a parking spot - that said, the standard of driving in Costa Rica is somewhat hair-raising! Staff at the hotel were amazing - on discovering it was my partner's birthday, we got a free upgrade to a suite, and a plate of fresh fruit on the day itself. Breakfast was ample and fresh. The only downsides: our suite would have benefited from some blinds/nets as it looked directly into the apartment building opposite. Finally, although not under the control of the hotel, was the street noise - we faced directly onto the Central Avenue, and between 08h and 18h, the shouts of the lottery ticket vendors was unremitting, then at 17:30 came the singer (The Banana Boat Song was the only one in his tuneless repertoire, and by the fourth night, I wanted to do more than tally his bananas for him!). All in all, a great base for exploring San Jose.
