This hotel is top notch. It's beautiful and impeccably clean. What truly makes it special is the staff. Every single person, from Danel at reception who checked us in, to Pablo at reception who gave us information on the history of the hotel and helped with directions, to the bellman who also helped with directions, to the waitstaff and housekeeping staff, these employees are true gems. In a country filled with the most amiable people, this hotel stands out. Though tap water in Costa Rica is fine to drink, this hotel has filtered water. There is also hand sanitizer everywhere for guests to use and, though it may sound minor, the only one of our 5 hotels that had conditioner as well as shampoo in the bathroom. We so appreciated our request for early check in being accommodated, though obviously this cannot always work out, as well as our request for a quiet room. The food is delicious. You can stay at less expensive places, but a stay here is absolutely worthwhile and very special. A fabulous way for us to end our 2.5 week stay in this exceptionally beautiful country. Pure Vida!

We spent one night here on our way out of the country. Initially, we'd planned to park our things and see a bit of the city, but we arrived tired, and there didn't seem to be much near the hotel, so we decided to stay put.

We enjoyed a beverage and snack at the charming bar while we waited for our room (we were a little bit early) then we settled in, had a good workout in the clean, attractive little gym area (sheltered, but open to the sky and the view- water and towels provided, and a sweet herb wall) and went downstairs for a delicious dinner with excellent service.

Our top floor suite was a delightfully eccentric pastiche of Victorian and Spanish influences, altogether a great space, with a very comfortable king bed, dark panelling, vintage tiling, plants, a city view, a coffee cart, a safe, snacks, a jacuzzi, everything you could want for a restful, luxurious night (the shower stall could stand an update at some point, but not terrible.) The cleaning staff must be excellent- the room was impeccable.

The next morning, after a delicious breakfast in the courtyard, we wandered the hotel taking pictures. The eccentric, rambling decor delighted us, like walking through a collage. There's a greenhouse area full of jungle plants, a pretty fountain, a collection of wall clocks, lanterns, lattice walls, antiques, photos, etc. Prettiness, interest and fun.

When it was time to head for the airport, our cab arrived promptly. Altogether, a fine experience.

My only suggestion would be to ensure the desk staff greet people warmly and offer every assistance. While they stored our luggage for 1/2 hour on arrival, which we appreciated, they did not suggest where we might sit to wait, or where we might go for a walk. We had to find our own way to the bar, after a brief attempt to go walking. When we booked our cab, we also found them efficient but a bit cool. Overall, professional rather than friendly.

But that's a small matter compared to all we liked about this hotel.
A last, happy memory of Costa Rica.

We splurged for a one-night stay here after a long day flying out of San Francisco. Since it was the start of our 30th wedding anniversary celebration, we opted for luxury and comfort. This converted Tropical Victorian mansion was a welcome respite. Too late for dinner, we had drinks at the bar, and was pleasantly surprised that the hotel bar offered Casinova di Neri, one of my favorite Brunellos, by the glass. They also had a great selection of ports, as well. We were treated to the best room suite at the top level of the hotel. Our room was well decorated with antiques, included a jetted spa tub, with a panaramic view of the city of San Jose. What a special treat and restive night before heading to La Fortuna and Arenal the next morning. Additonal descriptives are charming, elegant, romantic, and old world class. The staff was outstanding and welcoming. High recommend if staying in San Jose and willing to pay a little more.

A charming Victorian mansion made into a hotel. The public areas are very beautiful, lots of dark wood and green plants, wooden carvings and a fountain.
You can use the two jacuzzis and the gym, just remember to book them (for free). Breakfast is served to tables and is nice (not included), and the dinner at the same restaurant was exactly what I needed after the long flight.

The location isn’t too bad, if not ideal, some 1.5 kilometres from the centre. You can walk or take a taxi.

The best part was the personnel - everyone was very polite and flexible, a late check out was arranged as all the info and service (like taxis) I needed.

The worst part was my room (number 15).
The size was ok for one person (if you’re used to the European size hotel rooms rather than the US size). It was somewhat dim, the only window was to a tiny inner yard, and since the room was on the ground floor, no daylight ever reached it.
The worst part about the ground floor room were the ants. I spotted a few on my arrival but didn’t think anything of it, you’ll always have some insects in the tropics.
On my second day I woke up to find my bed full of ants. (See photo and video.)
Perhaps they had been there the previous night as well, but I’d been so dead tired I hadn’t noticed them. They didn’t bite but still a bad experience. When I informed the personnel I was told it means I’m sweet.

If you decide to stay here, I would recommend to ask a room from somewhere else than the ground floor.

We came here on the first night of our honeymoon and were very excited after reading all the reviews. The food was excellent unfortunately even though the service started well it declined quickly as the meal progressed.
By halfway through our mains the waiters were loudly clearing the tables around us, even though I was told a 2030 reservation was fine when I booked 2 weeks before.
After finishing our mains the bill was obviously left on the table next to us and our wine glasses were topped up everytime we had a sip.
The final disappointment was when paying, the $100 bill used as part of the payment was brought back and I was told it could not be taken as it had a tiny rip in the top. I would not be exaggerating to say the rip was 3-5mm and the rest of the note was pristine having received it as travel money 2 days before.
Even after pointing out we did not have other notes that would make up the total I was told that it was unacceptable and I must pay by card.
All in all a pleasant eating experience soured by employees that clearly wanted to get off early.

My husband and I spent 1 night there when we arrived to San Jose and were supposed to stay another night in San Jose before returning home.
The hotel has a lot of charm, beautiful central terrace, good restaurant and smiling staff but that was it.
The moment we entered the room I felt it was not up to the standards of what we thought would be. We stayed in room 4. Room very dated, the coverlet in the bed didnt look tidy, the bathroom was very small and towels also need to be updated. We closed the window and there was a gap between them and the a/c was in a position that the air went direct into the bed. The sheets and blanket need to be updated urgently. We were cold and couldn’t find another blanket in the closet. Old bathrobes and no slippers. No turndown service either. Not a single special detail in spite of being a “boutique hotel”.

Since we arrived early we payed for an early check in and breakfast was include, I ordered a ham & cheese omelette and what I received was a totally dry and over cooked egg tortilla folded in the middle. Not an omelette anywhere in the world, my husband ordered something like huevos rancheros and they were ok, nothing special. We had dinner there and it was very good. We couldn’t understand why so much difference being the same kitchen. The central terrace is really beautiful.

The following day we left at 8 am to go to the jungle ang again, breakfast wasn’t nice or good. We both ordered granola and it was not good at all, something didnt taste good for us.

We cancelled our return night there. We didnt like the bed linens, towels, breakfast…nothing to do around the area for us.

We have decided to stay in a hotel in Escazu near restaurants.

Again, the building looks nice and the service and food for dinner was good but nothing else. Stay somewhere else and go there for dinner.

I had a last minute business trip and needed to coordinate transportation from the airport to outside of the city and then to the hotel for a one night stay. I emailed and called several hotels and Grano de Oro was by far the most responsive and accommodating. In addition, I needed a Covid test done the next morning and the reception arranged for me to have a rapid test in the hotel, it took fifteen minutes for me to get the results, this was super convenient and the price was the same as me having to go to the clinic to get the test done. That one night I also arranged for a massage (booked upon check in) with Yendry, and it was by far one of the BEST massages, she was super knowledgeable, caring and intuitive. Special thanks to the restaurant where they accommodated my vegan diet both during dinner and breakfast. Also, thank you to Marco who was super welcoming at the front desk and helpful as well. Can't wait to come back with more time to enjoy Grano de Oro to it's fullest.

We really enjoyed our two nights at this hotel. It is welcoming, well located and very professional. San Jose centre is a short taxi ride so you can leave the car outside the hotel and relax. The room was nicely furnished, with a cosy ambiance. Highly recommend and would stay again.

Grano de Oro stands for a grain of gold, which really refers to the cash-crop coffee beans. The hotel, which is transformed from a 1900 mansion is magnificent in all respects—ambiance, decor, history, architecture, service, cuisine, location, and uniqueness. We highly recommend it for visitors spending a night or more in San Jose as they head on to, or return from, other vacation sites upcountry or along the beaches.

The Grano de oro hotel in the middle of San Jose was a welcome oasis after traveling from the U.S. We stayed in their finest room and it was well worth the extra $. It was taking a trip to another time. The restaurant is beautiful and the food excellent with great service. We felt well cared for and completely impressed with every aspect of our stay.

Not too sure if you can easily change room but I’ll be surprised if you get a noisy room as it is very quite there. I think they can arrange a pick up for you in the airport. Having said that, there is a lot of taxi or Uber is even available there.

I used the enquiry service with the booking agency, which I think was Expedia. I was not sure that the message would get to the hotel, but I got a personal reply within 24 hours and was told the car had been booked and would be there to meet us. This worked exactly right, and once in the hotel I was able to meet and thank the staff member. Hence, my advice is to email the hotel directly, or to contact staff via your booking agency, or do both. Honestly this is a great hotel and I am sure you will be helped.

Good afternoon. So glad you are coming to stay with us! One option is to rent a car at the airport and drive to our hotel. It is not complicated but being your first time in the country and if it will be dark when you arrive you may rather take a transfer to the hotel and have the rental car people come to the hotel the next morning and drop your car off to you. Please contact us so we can give you more personalized help!
