Hotel Don Carlos was the perfect place to stay for our first night in Costa Rica. The staff is really friendly and super helpful; they gave us suggestions for travelling within Costa Rica. We stayed a second night when we passed through San Jose on our way to Puerto Viejo. This is the night that stands out - when I...

We stayed at Hotel Don Carlos for a couple of nights in the middle of July 2011. It was a very charming hotel with a great location and very friendly staff. It definitely felt like you stepped back in time. With that said, there was a smell once you walked into the hotel that is found in most old places....

Stayed at this hotel June 15 and June 16. Clerks (especially Steve and Rodrigo) were exceptional in their helpfulness. Unlike hotels that you can find anywhere (chains, etc.), this has lots of character. Have stayed in San Jose many times but this has to be the best in downtown. Traditional breakfast was great. One family member, after taking a tour...

I have stayed at The Don Carlos several times when I come to San Jose for business or meeting with friends. This past week I found myself needing a place to rest my head and quickly called them for a one night visit. Despite the fact the hotel was pretty close to full, the desk manager managed to find me...

Don Carlos is somewhat difficult to find if you are driving yourself. Much easier to take a taxi but once you get there the charm leads you to believe you are not in the middle of San Jose. This hotel is several old homes put together and the interior is beautiful and very clean. The rooms are large and airy....

True - lovely, historic building and great location when visiting down town San Jose BUT this hotel needs too much work for me to want to stay here again. Stayed here twice (4 nights) this past month and both times in older part of hotel. Heard every footstep through the halls, every word spoken, even ringing of phone in other...

Good location, very historical, clean, well decorated.Staff very friendly & helpful. We had no problems but,no sink stopper or light over sink.We would look forward to staying again. The hotel has a storage room where we left out gifts until our return,so it was less to carry all over the country. The hotel has a tour office for additional tours & pickups.Restaurant food was better than...

We really liked the hotel decoration, the friendly staff, the location, but unfortunately the room we stayed in smelled really bad (stuffy and moldy) and the bed was not comfortable at all...Maybe the mold is due to the fountains and water elements in the patio (we had room 5 on the ground floor). I would still recommend the hotel, avoiding...
