We reserved a room at Don Carlos for our last night in CR. First impression; it was beautiful, we were greeted by the security guard who guided us to the front desk. From there we were checked in by a gentlemen named Pedro, who couldn't have been more helpful or kind. The room was small, but lovely. The decor fit... More

Strayed in this cosy cheerful little hotel 3 x 1 nights during our trip in Costa Rica. The hotel is located in the middle of the San Jose downtown, but still it is very quit and save. This is not an international luxury hotel. Local hotel with A LOT of charm. All the room are decorated in local stile and... More

We spent a night at Hotel Don Carlos on Dec 5-6 after a terrific holiday in Costa Rica. It was Friday night and the traffic in downtown San Jose was chaotic to say the least. Because of the increased crime rate, it was also the first night that the ATM machines were closed at 10 PM. Thus, the reception also... More

The hotel is a good choice if you're spending a first and/or last night in San Jose. The hotel is in decent shape and undergoing some renovations, which will presumably spiff up the place a little bit. It is clean and comfortable enough for post-arrival or pre-departure accommodations. The location is reasonably safe, although you are wise not to venture... More

Great place to stay near the center of town. Very cozy, family oriented hotel. Rooms are clean, helpful people all around, especially at the front desk. We were concerned (reading a previous review) that the keys for the rooms were the same keys for the safe keys, but not so. We left a deposit at the front desk and got... More

This hotel was a true dump. The room reminded me a dingy motel room in the US. It smelled bad and was dark and depressing. The entire hotel was dark and depressing, to be honest. The staff was less than friendly, not particularly helpful either. If you have to stay in San Jose, spend the extra hundred bucks to stay... More

This hotel is currently under renovations! We arrived in the afternoon to the sounds of broken glass and walls being torn down. I would not recommend staying here until the renovations have been completed. The restaurant was shut down. The gift shop wasn't open either. I would feel comfortable staying here again as long as the renovations have been completed... More

Stayed here for a night before going to Arenal. There were 6 of us (3 to a room). My triple was a corner and nicer than the other room, but both were big enough. The staff is good (Mauricio was our kind host) with a complementary drink when we got there and breakfast in the morning. It is right near... More

We stayed at the Hotel Don Carlos twice while in Costa Rica: our first night, then our last two nights. Our first night we had a room overlooking the foyer and it was small and lacked airflow. On our return we were in a much larger room overlooking the patio and street and it was very comfortable with the typically... More
