It was bad! It used to be a beautiful place years ago. Not anymore. Landscape is not taking care of. I got mosquito bites. There were spider webs in my room and I saw one🕸️on the shower towels. Service was poor. I tried to get another room and was told the hotel was full which I didn’t believe. It looked empty instead. Their policy won’t accept cancellations so you will loose your money. Staff was ok. Not so welcoming and accommodating. The bathroom smelled bad. Water didn’t drain well in the shower. The toilet had a brown stain. It looked gross and dirty. The wood floors made a creaking noise when you walk around the room. I stayed there for two nights and couldn’t wait to get out of there! Do not stayed at this place and save yourself a terrible experience!

This hotel is the best bargain in town. I have been in and out of hotels for a year now in the San Jose area, and for price and location and the most pleasant room with a wonderful outdoor space you can't beat the And I cannot finish this review without a shout out to Senor Francisco Bustamante, the superlative Capitan de Hotel. He is one of the best hotel managers, quietly competent, and always anticipating his guest needs before a word needs be said You can't beat this place

I can only think that the security is high (you basically have to ring the doorbell to be let in any time of day or night) because the surrounding area (not necessarily the exact street it’s on) is a little sketchy. Having said that, it’s only about 10+ minutes to walk to a nice area where there are lots of good bars and restaurants. The hotel itself is clean and well kept. The rooms are a reasonable size and the breakfast is pretty good.

If I could give this hotel zero stars, I would. What was once a luxurious and elegant establishment where we stayed 20 years ago is now a sad, decrepit shell of its former self. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this hotel had fallen into disrepair. The front desk attendant was nowhere to be found, and we had to ring a doorbell and wait for what seemed an eternity before someone finally showed up to check us in. Our room was a huge disappointment. While we had an outdoor “patio”, there was only a table frame with no top, so we couldn't even enjoy the outdoor space that we paid for. The bathroom had no towels, and the bedspreads did not appear washed or changed from the previous guest. The entire hotel had a sleazy and dirty feel to it – peeling paint, dirty floors, electrical wires hanging out of the walls, etc. To make matters worse, the hotel had a locked-down feel with bars and locks everywhere, including the reception area. It was as if they were expecting some sort of attack, and it instilled no confidence in the safety of the premises. When you park, the parking area is locked personally by the attendant with a padlock, and guess what? When you want to leave, you have to go and find the attendant by, you guessed it, ringing the doorbell and waiting and waiting and waiting … After seeing the condition of our room, we quickly picked up our luggage and fled to a much better place. I would strongly not recommend this hotel. Save yourself our experience and book somewhere else.

Planned to stay for 3 nights but stayed for 1. Horrible! Ignored my request for a refund. So I got it thru my bank. Got owner's whatsapp #. They read my request + photos. No response, no acknowledgement, no apology. They blocked me instead!!

Large spacious rooms but unfortunately my room was to front of the hotel, where I was treated to the noise from an on-street party (across the road) which went on until 4am. This occurred on two consecutive nights- although the party goers were rained off early on the 2nd night. I understand that there was little the hotel could do about it but my tip is to request a quieter room to the rear of the hotel. Also my check-in lasted for an hour as the price I was being charged was higher than the email confirmation I had received and the receptionist had to contact the manager/owner out of hours to verify the price. Totally exhausted after two long flights, at 11pm it was unwelcome to have this discussion!

We stayed here three separate times in 2014 when we travelled extensively throughout Costa Rica and, as we had very much enjoyed those visits, we opted to stay there again last month. Sadly, the hotel has gone seriously downhill since then. The building is in a poor state of repair and the rooms are gloomy and in need of updating. Customer service was totally unsatisfactory - whether this is the impact of Covid or bad management it is difficult to say. On previous visits the warmth and welcome of all the staff was something which stood out - the opposite was true on our most recent stay. At breakfast on our first morning, we were completely ignored and other guests who arrived after us were served before us. Not that breakfast is worth having. Our room was not serviced on the first day, apart from having towels taken away and not replaced. Cleaning of the room needs more attention as cobwebs behind the door remained in place for the entirety of our stay. Our patio was unusable owing to its filthy state and the cracked glass table. The last straw was when we asked for a 2pm check out to coordinate with our pickup. We were refused, due to "company policy", even when we pointed out that most of the hotel's rooms were unoccupied. They said we could have an extra 15 minutes - after discussion extended to 30 - after which they would charge extra. At 11.31am they knocked on the door demanding we leave or pay. We pointed out our email booking had said 12 noon for check out so we had another hour. In the end we left before that because of the bad feeling and ill will. On the positive side, things that worked well were the airport transfer arranged by the hotel, reasonable wifi in our room and decent hot water in the shower, although an incredible amount of water was wasted every time while waiting for the hot water to come through. One good thing which hasn't changed is the location which is excellent, a safe, relatively quiet area which is walking distance into downtown San Jose but, more importantly, steps away from Barrio Escalante with its great bars and restaurants. We will be coming back to this area but will be looking for a different place to stay next time.

I arrived at 8.00 am to join organised grouo trip the next day . I was picked up from hotel on pre booked taxi . On my arrival the young man on reception was so unhelpful and rude - was not interested in helping, just kept saying no English . He had my passport for my name but showed no interest in any customer support - I was tired and thirsty after leaving Guatemala at 1am - no kindness, care or customer service was shown . I'm presuming the young man was night shift . An older chap turned up qt 9am and by this time I was tearful, kept telling me to be calm and initially refused to call the tour operator. I have travelled to 43 countries and never have received such careless, quite unkind service

We had higher hopes for the Hotel Bergerac as our friend had recommended it. We arrived on Jan 1 at about 9am and the very young and not very helpful person said under no conditions (except $50/hr) would we be able to get into our room before 3pm. Happy New Year to you too! Fortunately, we had the wherewithal to go back and there was a very nice older gentlemen who was a million times more helpful. We did get in before 1:30pm. We got the noisiest room which was really annoying. But when we asked to switch rooms for our second night, the older gentleman was super helpful. Regardless, with the non-welcome from that first guy, and a first night of little sleep, and then the chef not making amends for a vegan diet, I would not stay there again.

Nice hotel, offering a good value for the money. The staff is friendly and breakfast is quite good, but not large. The hotel is very secure. Overall this is a good place for the price. There were a surprising number of nice restaurants in the vicinity.
