The Grosvenor is extremely well positioned, very central, a short walk to shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, with off-street car parking right opposite. Reception services were good, and the room was clean and spacious. It’s also very reasonably priced. We don’t usually dine in the hotel where we’re staying (to us it’s a good way of getting to know the... More

Visiting family mid January. Nice rooms clean and good facilities. Very good staff who were helpful with directions and suggestions of other places to eat etc. Near to who we wanted to visit with new baby. Handy to town. Mind you everything is close by in Timaru

Excellant location, parking across the road, great price and the room was great, clean lots of space and had a bit of character, restaurant and bar were great and staff very helpful and friendly. Not the bland motel type hotel, I'd recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Timaru

For what you pay for, this ticks all the boxes. Warm rooms, ensuite, television, easy walk to all attractions, friendly staff who seem to enjoy their jobs. Free wifi. Clean bathrooms and bedrooms, I was in a room with a connecting door to another room, and there was minimal sound proofing between the rooms ( I could hear my neighbours... More

Greetings Fforde Thank you for your objectivity. You were in family interconnecting rooms. Yes, sound insulation couldn't be helped with rooms that are meant to be interconnected somehow. Being a historical hotel, the timber over the years would have moved. Therefore, unlike a concrete floor, the gap of certain door is larger than the others. We applaud you MacGyver tendency,... Staff very friendly, from the cleaners to the receptionist. Excellent location, right in the heart of the city within a minute walking distance to the city and a 5 minute walk to caroline bay. The room was a little tired, but spotless and cosy, after all what are you there for, to see Timaru or to gripe about a room... More

Greetings Jesks Thank you for pointing out our central location. Yes, at 141 years old, The Grosvenor is one of the oldest building in the region. "Historical" is not a stretch. That being said, we have been carrying out renovation for the past eleven years and it's still ongoing. A lot of people don't actually realise that we have perfected... More

Stayed one night on a business trip - pulled up outside and was slightly concerned, but once inside it's really nice - NOT a bland chain hotel kinda nice, but an interesting nice. Room had been recently renovated and was clean and comfy, staff were really friendly and helpful. Excellent Value.

From the outside the Grosvenor Hotel looks a little run down but once you get inside its a different story. The entrance and and rooms are quite quirky. The room i had looks like it had a refurbish and other than a lack of lighting every thing was nicely done and was a pleasant stay. The food in the restaurant was good... Well let me start off by saying I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It took us a while to find it, and when we pulled into the car park we thought the exterior was a little dated but you could see that the ground floor had had a fresh-ish coat of paint. We walked inside, and reception was dark... More

Location to city centre is near, staff service was average, interesting that their lift is old-school and retro, first time experiencing it. Room wise, it is big but not much amenities. Overall pleasant stay.

We stayed here for two nights to attend a wedding in town and I wanted to move from the minute we arrived. It's weird, really weird. I think the best summary is that it's a glorified hostel disguising itself as a hotel and resting on the laurels of a very long past history when it had some moments of glory.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Grosvenor has a penchant for authentic and unique design. Although we have been called a boutique hotel and a hip hotel, we're not sure what that really means. We're a little modern, and a little bohemian. Featuring an on-site restaurant and bar, The Grosvenor Hotel Timaru offers boutique & funky accommodation. Our accommodation offers feature art by local and international artists, throughout the hotel. You might stay that The Grosvenor is Timaru's Home of Modern Art (HoMA). With 44 rooms which are eco-friendly, sustainable and have green elements, like vintage furniture, low-VOC paints and recycled materials throughout. All accommodation has an ensuite with hairdryer, ironing board & iron, tea & coffee making facilities, complimentary unlimited Wi-Fi and TV. Fridges are available on request. Guests can enjoy dining in our fantastic restaurant which is now a Timaru institution, TGB (The Grosvenor Bar) is located in a one of a kind historical building with dramatic high ceilings, nostalgic exposed brick and modern touches. Whet your appetite with local, regional and international beers and cider. Then enjoy innovative tavern fare including traditional roasts, urban burgers, fresh salads, wrap, artisanal sandwiches and many other Kiwi favorites. ... more   less
