Dined here two nights of our four night stay in Newport, great food excellent staff, lovely ambience, customer service is brilliant and genuinely meant!!! It is so unusual these days to find somewhere like this 👏
We had an ok stay and the staff couldn't do enough for you and it was a friendly atmosphere. Couple of things that weren't so great was the uncomfortable mattress that was too soft and stopped me sleeping well. Also, there is very loud live band music being played on the weekend (this was a Friday) that also hindered our and son's sleep. May be an idea to look at the black mould in the bathroom tile grout and also the dust on top of the wardrobe on rooms 4. The breakfast was really enjoyable and lots of choice was given. The ladies that served it made us feel welcome and at home. I didn't mention about the mattress and loud band music as we were only staying one night but it's worth considering this for future guests. The awsome staff are a credit to this pub/hotel. Thanks for the stay.…
Just back from a family one- nighters and very enjoyable it was too. This place isn’t a ‘boutique’ hotel ( though I suspect it is striving to be) but is none the worse for that. Fairly basic rooms are super clean and offer everything you want but with few frills. Where this place excels is in its food and, particularly, its welcoming staff who go out of their way to help. Our evening meal was good if not great. But breakfast the next morning was superb. We’ll definitely make a return visit at some stage.
We have just come back from a two night stay at the Lion. Got to say that in all aspects it was first class. From our room which was spotless and well presented, to the staff and food you could not fault anything. If you are looking for a quality stay in Newport then I recommend the Lion without hesitation. Would we book it again , absolutely. We didn’t want to come away
Fantastic food and lovely staff ! You won’t be disappointed ☹️ Very welcoming and excepted dogs . The staff went out of their way to make our visit enjoyable. We will definitely recommend this friendly pub.
This pub is very clean and very well run. The service is excellent and every waitresses and staff members we met were absolutely very welcoming. The food is very good and the place is very clean and well run. Highly recommended.
We were travelling around Wales, on our way to our B&B, and wife was getting "Hangry", so pulled into the Golden Lion as we passed through Newport. What a great find!!!! Even though they seemed to be pretty booked up, the bar guy put us in at a table that wasn't reserved for another 2 hours. We had great service, great beer, and great food. The staff was wonderful.
My wife and I together with our young retriever Holly recently stayed at this charming but lively little gem of a hotel. The room was great and conveniently located with a dog in tow! The food was of a very high quality with a menu that offered something for everyone. we ate there 3 nights and wish had been for all 4! It has a typical pub atmosphere and they have recently completed extensive work outside to increase the dining capacity and make a great outdoor experience! But what made the stay extra special was the service provided by a young but efficient, super friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us and Holly! Hats off especially to Claire and Magda who kept tabs on everything in this busy but very well-run Hotel. Thanks guys.... John
The Sunday lunch was excellent and well worth the many miles of detour we made in order to enjoy the food at the Golden Lion once again. The roast beef was so tasty and the variety, quantity and quality of the veg first class. The staff also gave us a great welcome and service. Thank you for a real treat.
Fabulous welcome after a long stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coastal path. Brilliant young and enthusiastic team. Really comfortable room, appreciated the choice of bath or shower. Great linen and towels. Food for dinner was excellent, I had the sea bass special and my friend the Welsh beef lasagna. Breakfast stunning and a delicious loaf was used in the packed lunch. Highly recommend for Coast path walkers and others who find themselves in this corner of Wales.
