What a beautiful house with real history, antiques, incredibly welcoming, oozing romance and opulent decor throughout - the staff were there to help & assist however at same time wanted to make the experience as intimate and relaxing as possible - beautiful beautiful accommodation and I wish our stay was longer Food fabulous and good recommendations given for eating out...

Just had a very nice evening there, with great food & attentive service. Very peaceful place with atmosphere. The restaurant is really nice, with "honest food" and some interesting wines - ask for the "hidden treasures" in the cellar. Very recommendable!

Like many other guests at Hacklewood Hill, it served as a staging post on a wider tour of South Africa and we will, surprisingly, look back on it as one of the highlights. It was so completely unexpected to find such a perfectly preserved and charming late Victorian property (originally a Doctor's house) in this part of the world and...

WOW! ... Thank you for the fantastic review.

A very old piece of history well kept . It felt like a time warp as the whole of this beautifully maintained property was furnished as it had been built in 1890 's . The staff are very friendly and helpful . We only ate breakfast but it was very good and served in a truely Victorian manor . The...

Thank you for you review. The garden does really help give us that secluded feel.

From the very first moment this was a really, really good experience! We are 100% satisfied with everything -- luxury rooms everywhere (bedroom, lounge, dining hall), very nice food, perfect service by very friendly staff. Highly recommended!

As I walked into this lovely Victorian house I was overcome with nostalgia -- it reminded me so much of my granny and my great-uncle and aunt, who both lived in houses built at the end of the 19th century. I love the high-ceilinged and generously proportioned rooms. The welcome and the kind treatment from management could not be faulted....

We stayed here for the first two nights of our trip to South Africa before driving the garden route to Cape Town. They provided detailed and straightforward driving instructions from the airport (less than 10 minutes) and, from the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. Our room was amazing, from the very large beroom and...

This is a magnificent Victorian property located in a very upmarket area of PE but still close to the airport. We only stayed here for one night en route to safari at Amakhala. The building is wonderful with many original features. Our bedroom was at the front with a huge balcony overlooking pool and garden and was delightful but the...

Great room, with a huge bathroom. Incredibly clean, great service from staff and the food was also great! Price of room and food was very reasonable for what you got. We only stayed for one night, next time we'll stay for longer.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1898, and nestled in a lush English garden setting in the leafy suburb of Walmer, Hacklewood Hill is one of the few remaining Victorian Manor Houses in the city, and as such retains much of the elegance and grace it would have boasted when its first inhabitants – a young doctor and his family – once lived here. Guests are greeted with intricately stained glass doors, gleaming wooden floors and the gentle sheen of wooden banisters lovingly buffed and polished for more than a century. Wandering around the house’s two reception rooms, your eye naturally gravitates from one fascinating period piece to another. A black and white checkerboard tiled veranda overlooks a sparkling swimming pool, perfect for leisurely dips on hot summer days – while the well-established garden beckons for a quiet stroll or perhaps even a civilised game of croquet on the lawn. The more energetic can opt for a gentlemanly game of tennis or just choose a secluded spot in the garden to enjoy the abundant birdlife which calls the grounds of Hacklewood home. The manor house’s eight luxury en suite rooms which are equally as enticing, especially as each so perfectly captures the essence of the Victorian Age. Each is individually decorated in palettes ranging from pastel blues and rose bedecked pinks to more masculine browns and reds. As a result, each room has its own unique character and returning guests will enjoy experiencing them all, and will, no doubt, be loath to pick a favourite at the end. In order to truly experience Hacklewood Hill at the height of its stately Victorian glory, guests need to make a point of opting for at least one dinner at the house’s five star restaurant. The dining room’s magnificent chandelier lights, to full perfection the cut glass, crystal goblets, starched linen and full silver service on the tables below, while superbly trained waiters serve a splendid array of cordon bleu dishes that emanate from the kitchen. Little wonder that the restaurant has garnered itself a slew of fine dining awards and has become a firm favourite on the Port Elizabeth dining scene – not only for its exquisite dinners, but also full English breakfasts, High Tea's and light lunches. For a thoroughly enjoyable trip back to a time when days were long and unhurried, furnishings were beautiful and handmade, and every meal was an occasion to use only the best china and silverware, guests need look no further than Hacklewood Hill Country House. ... more   less
