Welcome to the Garden Route's oldest and best-loved Hotels! With a grand tradition as honeymoon spot, family hotel and a tourist and business destination, it's steeped in tradition and it's got a warm, old-style charm. But it's also a modern hotel with all the facilities you need - The 150-bedroom property boasts a beauty spa, two swimming pools, a bowling green, two tennis courts, a squash court, putt-putt and six banqueting halls and conference rooms. We are situated almost in the centre of the Garden Route - 45 minutes' drive to both Mossel Bay and Knysna, less than an hour to Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. Not to mention 300 meters from golden beaches, surrounded by indigenous forests and striking lagoons. It's a Mecca for sport and adventures and Wilderness is part of the unfenced Garden Route National Park - with some of the world's most popular walks and trails. All of this makes The Wilderness Hotel perfect for niche markets like birders, mountain bikers, golfers and for tour companies too, of course.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Wilderness Hotel. A great place to go with the family as there is so much to do at the hotel and the area. We enjoyed the fabulous spread at breakfast - something for everyone.

This hotel is affordable and ideally situated, you can walk to coffee shops, restaurants and shops. There are on-site activists to keep kids entertained. It is looking a bit tired but you can see that every attempt is being made at keeping it very neat and clean. The rooms are old with renovated bathrooms. I like that the old ceilings and woodwork has been kept as it gives the building its old character. It must have been a grand old dame in its day. I requested a room in a quieter wing of the building as I found the noise around room 133 dreadful! The other room (122) was so quiet and the rest of my stay was made pleasant. Breakfast on the weekend was popular but I can’t really comment as I never ate it . During the weekdays , a small menu option was offered to guests offering bacon, eggs, mushroom, sausage, tomatoes, muffins, toast, fruit snd yoghurt. It looked fine but I am on a healthy eating plan so opted not to eat. This hotel is basic and comfortable with no frills , it served our purpose of being a base at night in the town.

Value for money and good service. Good location to be based for a holiday. Parking is the only concern for the hotel. It is to limited. My room extraction fan was also very noisy and should be looked at.

Booked a last minute room via BA Avios. Arrival saw us battling finding parking...found out later that parking is available at the back even though we still couldn't find it. Receptionist was friendly and accepted our early arrival. Like many reviews, the hotel is full of history but it's still a hotel with certain feature, amenities etc that clients would expect. Our room: Outside patio lights did not work. Extractor fan in bathroom did not work. Telephone did not work. Aircon heat setting did not work. Lighting in the room and shower not adequate. Shower water was luke warm. Room smelt a bit mouldy. Single chair should be removed as it was well worn and just looked dirty. Bedside table had some type of 'splatter' on it. Bedside lights can't be reached when laying in bed. Our room was opposite the laundry room and staff were exceptionally loud. We left for the beach and dinner and upon our return, a room 2 doors down had arranged a child care lady for their kids but she allowed the kids to run screaming down the hallway and slam their door repeatedly for more than 2 hours. I eventually walked to reception, phone did not work, to complain. Reception handled my complaint reasonably well. Cannot believe there is no allocated area for child care services. Breakfast: Buffet was limited. Scramble eggs were not Hotel standards. No knife at the bread station. Coffee was OK. Checkout did not include a 'How was your stay?, 'Thanks for staying with us...hope to see you soon'.
