Travellers' Choice
The Vuyani Safari Lodge is located in the Blue Canyon Private Game Reserve which is more than 36,000 acres in size and part of the Greater Kruger National Park area. At the foot of the Drakensberg mountain range, Vuyani Safari Lodge is one of South Africa's premier safari lodges, in the country's most famous area for African wildlife. The Vuyani Safari Lodge is one of only 2 licensed lodges on this reserve, and with only 10 suites, it offers one of the most exclusive safari experiences in South Africa. The reserve offers a unique opportunity to observe all of Africa's large game such as the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, hippo and crocodile as well as some of the very rarest species, amongst others the wild dog, the brown hyena, the ground hornbill, cheetahs and several other highly endangered animals. Almost 400 various species of birds have been counted. Some of the rarest European migratory birds visit the reserve in the European winter months.

I wanted to do something special for my mum's 70th and stumbled on this gem. I received personalised attention from the get go from Robyn and Justine, helping me when SA went back onto the UK redlist, keeping me calm and making arrangements to suit the situation. We did manage to go and what a surprise ! We drove ourselves and arrived a bit later than anticipated. To our surprise, the buffet lunch was kept out for us in case we were peckish after the long journey. We were then escourted to our suite, and all I can say is WOW! I asked for a Honeymoon Suite which has an outside shower, plunge pool and a huge comfy bed. The minibar had beers, cider, soft drinks, water and wine. We then met the team who absolutely could not do enough for us. Kgomotso, Vlak, Lani, Chriswell, Clive, Duncan with his delicious dinners, Rose with her beautiful breakfasts. Sifiso (or Wish according to another guest :p) for our unforgettable 5am wake up calls and last but not least our guide and tracker Uyai and Chris ! Looking relentlessly for our leopard, but hey, next time guys :). There was a big surprise for us all in the week where the lodge baked the most delicious cake to celebrate my mum's birthday. The special touch was the 'magic' candles that just kept igniting after being blow out. Very funny. Our glasses were kept full, just arriving without so much as a mere nod. Our bellies have grown a bit with all the delicious food. On the game drives, Uyai and Chris did their utmost to find us all we wanted to see. Male lions puffing their chests out at each other across the fence, lazy lion cubs, one of the shy 5, 2 of the ugly 5 and 4 of the big 5 :D. Chris kept us well fed with his 'homemade' biltong and cookies (made to a secret recipe, can't reveil the secret). Uyai answered all the questions that showed an absolute VAST knowledge of the bush. Trees, flowers, dung beetles, animals, birds, you ask he will probably have an answer. We had an absolute fantastic time and would most definitely return and I will whole heartedly recommend anyone to give Vuyani a go. You will not be disappointed.

Every single thing about the stay was exceptional, we have never felt so welcomed and looked after on any trip before. From the moment we got picked up at the airport by Harrod, who’s amazing knowledge and friendly personality we were made to feel so welcome. As we arrived at the lodge we were overwhelmed with how beautiful it was. The pictures do not do justice to how amazing it really is. We were greeted by homoto who went above and beyond to ensure we had the most perfect stay. The attention to detail with everything is amazing. The upgrade to the honeymoon lodge was worth the money; we enjoyed having our private whirlpool space to chill out and the room was fantastic. All the staff remembered our names, our drinks we liked, everything felt so personal and special. The game drives were amazing. Paul was our game ranger for the first half of the week- and there was nothing that he didn’t know. His knowledge and passion for his work was unbelievable. He made our drives so special and we were lucky enough to see the big 5 on our first drive with him. Every question we had Paul answered with such detail and every day we saw new and amazing things. The chefs and the food are to an extremely high standard. The choice, the quality, the presentation, absolutely beautiful. Everything was cooked to perfection and there is so much choice you certainly never go hungry. Overall we can’t say enough positive about this place. We would love to be able to come back again one day.

This was our second visit to Vuyani and our safari adventure once again can only be described as EPIC!!! Vuyani is one of the most extraordinary places we have ever visited [and we travel the world]. I cannot even begin to describe how amazing Vuyani is from the moment you arrive through the moment you sadly have to depart. The accommodations are 5-star, the food is plentiful and exceedingly delicious and healthy [they will cater to all dietary needs], and the staff are like your favorite family members. But the true gem here are the safari drives. The talent and knowledge of the guides and trackers once again far exceeded our expectations. You will possibly see everything from a dung beetle up through the Big Five [numerous times]. The drives [2 a day] are so exciting...you seriously will never want to leave. The lodge property is so lovely. You will meet travelers from all over the world during your stay who you will immediately become friends with and remain in contact far beyond your stay....a true testament to how magical and intimate a place Vuyani is. Just book your trip without hesitation and Vuyani will take care of the rest. We are already planning our 3rd trip back...I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful this place is. Once you visit you will fall in love and want to visit again...we certainly miss our Vuyani Family and cannot thank them enough for their warmth, friendliness, and attention to detail. Please also note, we traveled here during the pandemic [Omicron] and I cannot tell you how safe and secure it was here. Everyone is vaccinated, wears face coverings where appropriate, and practices social distancing and hand washing. The health and safety of their guests and the entire Vuyani Team is paramount...we so appreciated this.

I can’t recall now how I happened upon Vuyani, long time since I first booked and then Covid hit which meant a few rescheduled dates which were all accommodated unquestioningly. We finally got the green light and it was our first lodge on our itinerary. What a find! It is, without doubt, up there as one of the best lodges we have stayed in our frequent trips to the area. Less than 30 minutes from Hoedspruit airport, transfers are included and timely. The staff, incredibly friendly; the rooms, superb: the food, top notch: the game drives, incredible. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible; we were treated like royalty from start to finish. It was a sad day when we left and we vowed to return, not knowing then quite how soon that would be. Come the day before we were due to fly home the UK put South Africa on the red list and our flight was cancelled. Not knowing how or when we could get back to England, I got in touch with Vuyani and asked if they could accommodate us for our extended stay, however long that would be. Robyn quickly got back to me and everything was sorted; it was like coming home. We stayed in one of the Presidential Suites the first time, tons of space, inside shower, huge bed (extremely comfortable), jacuzzi on the deck. On our return I asked for a Honeymoon Suite, not as big but plenty of space nonetheless, outside shower and plunge pool and still a huge comfy bed. The fridge is topped up daily with beers, cider, soft drinks, water and wine. My one small gripe would be the sunbeds on the suite decks, I would prefer the flat type rather than the curvy ones there, if just for a post-breakfast snooze. Onios and Duncan expanded our waistlines with their superb lunches and dinners. Dinner was served in the boma every 3rd night. Mama Rose (I believe) prepared our breakfasts with a different special each day. How we missed those meals once we were forced into UK hotel quarantine! Drinks flowed, glasses were never empty (thanks to Clive & Chris!) and nor were our stomachs! The night-watch guys do a great job of waking and collecting you for drives and dinner. Whilst I respect that the camp is not fenced (and we did have civet, porcupine, gennet and nyala around our suite) it wasn't till the last night when a hyena came up behind me at dinner on the deck did I truly appreciate why they are there! Big thanks to Jannie, Aggy, Uyai and Mpilo for the wonderful game drives. With the exception of wild dogs, we saw everything we had hoped for and had a couple of terrific leopard sightings. Never in the 13 days (total) we stayed did I get bored of seeing the lion cubs. It’s currently a Big Four estate, the buffalo are still in the quarantine boma, but there is plenty more to see besides a tick-list. We are so grateful for everyone’s kindness, not least Robyn and the Vuyani office. The latter stay was a particularly stressful time but Kelly and the team went out of their way and persevered with our ever-changing plans. We will definitely return, it just won’t be as quick as last time!

The team at Vuyani made us feel very welcomed and comfortable through the stay! There was no ask to big or too small. The food was well catered, rooms cleaned daily, and every single member of the team appears to LOVE what they do (so important in hospitality). On the safaris (2x day), we saw four of the Big Five. We went in late November and saw young elephants with their parents, an impala less than an hour old taking its first steps, followed a lion stalking his prey, and more. Also fantastic for birding! We also took the nearby boat tour of the Blyde Canyon - the world's third largest canyon. It was really beautiful and we highly recommend it. The personnel at Vuyani are happy to help set up any such activities including the Blyde canyon tour, day trips to Kruger, massages and other treatments at the nearby spa (about 25 min away) and happily transport you to and from these activities. Airport transfers are also included. We had barely left Vuyani and we were already planning who among our friends we'd like to bring along on our next trip! Can't wait, just loved it.
