We travelled to Kruger Park in November 2016 and spent 4 nights at Balule satellite camp, what a wonderful peaceful campsite! If you don't want the hustle and bustle of the bigger rest camps then Balule is a great choice, bear in mind though that there is no electricity here and the camp sites are sand. On the banks of...

One of the nicest places in the park. There's nothing...no noise, no people, no signal, no electricity...Just open skies and hippos snoring. The hostess in charge of cleaning and bringing the candle lit lantern at sunset is the best! Facilities available are more than adequate. Heads up...lots of bugs. So bring a torch especially when going to the bathroom at...

We camped here for one night as part of a camping tour through Kruger Park from the centre to the south of the park. It is one of the few satellite camp sites set apart from the main rest camps and as such just has basic facilities. This is a great way to experience being in the bush though, close...

We slept one night in the tent side. Hyenas was passing us a few times while we had a braai. Nice and quiet. Showers are nice if you follow the instructions how to start the gas geysers. Would not reqiment the camp for kids as there are no swimming pool and they have to be quiet. Over all a very...

The camp is lovely and quiet. Had some issues with the ablution block. Had to ask for soap in the dispenser. There is often no toilet paper. Two of the three toilets don't flush properly. Shower went icy cold halfway through. The lamps at night are nowhere light enough to see by.. take a torch along. Otherwise enjoying our stay....

This is the best way to enjoy Kruger ! Just the basics : petrol lamps, gaz, barbecues, hot water, so you can sleep in the heart of the savana ! When the nightfall you'll be able to here the hyena, and other animals. We even heard a Lion, really close to the fence !

Balule Bungalows is in a perfect location, dueting resident fish eagles overlooking river, would only go back in mid winter, the no windows is a killer, even in mid April, they shoud have put in gauze windows back in 1994. My wife met an American in the ablutions who told her the only way to sleep in the bungalows is...

No electricity, clean, well kept, quiet camp! loved the closeness to nature, albeit a bit far from the abundance of wildlife in the lower Kruger area. Hyena that roam the fences at night are amazing to see up so close, some idiots do feed them and this is not clever! Bathrooms are kept clean and well lit. Definitely would go...

Balule is the tiny satellite camp to Orpen main camp, situated on the banks of the Timbavati River. Zondi, the camp manager, is a super-star, always ready to help you set up if needed, checking up on you after your day out animal spotting and making sure that the facilities are always spotless. The camp caters for those who want...

We were torn about reviewing this camp as you don't want to many people to know about it :). There is something special about this camp - it's small with no electricity to the sites and basic bathrooms (very clean) lit by paraffin lamps but it is so quiet and beautiful that we fell in love on sight.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Deep in the heart of the Kruger National Park, in the most exquisite topography, lies a small satellite camp. Named 'Balule' after the Tsonga word for the Olifants River, this camp is one of the best places for guests to experience nature first hand. Situated more or less in the centre of the Park, just south of Olifants Camp, Balule lies close to the mighty Olifants River. With only the most basic of facilities and no electricity, a low fence is the only barrier that separates you from the wilderness, resulting in a true back to basics experience. It is this unique wilderness feel of the camp that makes it a firm favourite with backpackers, the caravanning community and other visitors who want to get away from it all. ... more   less
