We had a wonderful breakfast and dinner - the ambience, service and food was excellent. I would like to make special mention of our evening host, Lisa Dube. She was exceptionally professional, engaging, attentive and an absolute delight. A true asset for the establishment.

The Cellars has had some ups and downs over the 20 years we have visited the hotel but we were delighted to find that this December it was very definitely providing an outstanding guest experience. Situated just a short drive from Kirstenbosh Gardens and with easy access to a number of excellent vineyards in the Constantia valley, the location below Table Mountain is ideal. At the same time the M3 affords easy access into Cape Town itself, to the waterfront ,and to both the False bay and Atlantic seaboards. The extensive and beautiful hotel grounds provide a tranquil retreat from the busy city, with well-tended gardens, historic camphor trees, interesting woodland strolls, a small vineyard and a raft of ducklings practicing their swimming technique. The Greenhouse restaurant (well past its sell-by date) has now been closed permanently and the self-contained old building is used for events - weddings and small upmarket conferences etc. The open verandahs and the lawns reaching to the heated swimming pool provide ample break-out space and it is easy to see why it is so popular. The patio and Conservatory restaurants in the main building are now the focus for dining. The patio has lovely mountain and garden views, is ideal for breakfast in good weather and shares the Conservatory menu for lunch and dinner. The breakfast buffet is temporarily in abeyance ( because of COVID restrictions) but the staff are adept at ensuring that everyone is served a range of tempting treats. An evening meal in the Conservatory looking out over the gardens remains a great experience and being able to host a successful small dinner party there was a highlight of our stay. Staff have come and gone over the years: the present complement appears well motivated, courteous and cheerful which makes for a pleasant ambience. This has not always been the case but the new General Manager has made great strides in instilling a much better ‘can-do / will-do’ attitude to the benefit of the guests. Rooms and suites in the main building have been renovated with care and taste and are comparable with the best anywhere. Small additions like a stocked complimentary fridge adds a feeling of being well cared for. Altogether this was a truly enjoyable stay in a 5 star hotel ideally positioned for a relaxing break, not too far from the city sights, with comfortable rooms, exceptional gardens, an interesting menu and great staff. It is high on our list of places to stay in the Western Cape when next we visit.
