Plaza Patagonia in Bariloche is a family run small apartment hotel with 3 large and 2 small accommodations. It is quite new, built about five years ago. Larger rooms on the 1st floor have separate bedrooms plus a loft. They are therefore suitable for families. The owner speaks English and she gave us very useful hiking information. We stayed there for nine days in late February 2012.
Even the small rooms (like ours called Frey) are spacious, cozy and clean. All rooms have a small kitchenette. The bathroom was large, and nicely decorated, it actually reminded us of South of France style! Upon arrival the heating was on in spite of the later summer and a daytime temperature of 15 degrees C. We understood the reason as 0 degrees C was registered early next morning! Even so, we had to adjust the temperature down. There’s no AC and probably no need for it normally.
Free internet access (plus Wi-Fi) was an additional asset.
The parking area behind the building is small, takes about five cars but more parking spaces can be found in front of the building.
The hotel is located at the busy Av. Bustillo (Km 6,126). However, nighttime traffic is negligible and does not pose a noise problem.
The proprietor has outsourced the small cafeteria/restaurant business in the same building.
During the day quite decent meals at good prices are served. However, they open quite late in the morning. So if you’re out early which is often the case in Bariloche it’s best to prepare your own breakfast. There’s also a popular restaurant Parrilla A Los Bifes next to the hotel.
Renting a car is recommended to explore Bariloche and the vicinity. For example, the drive to Catedral Village ski resort takes less than 30 min, downtown Bariloche less than 10 min.
We used El Cesar car rental, got a newish Ford Eco Sport with 26000kms on the clock. The owner spoke English and even drove us to the airport at the end of our stay without any extra cost.
All in all, we can warmly recommend Plaza Patagonia for visitors to San Carlos de Bariloche and the Lake District.

We stayed at the Plaza for a week. The owner upgraded us to the loft apartment. It was the
nicest apartment so far, on a year long trip. The location is perfect; just a little out side the
city (#20 bus stop in front of Plaza), and only a half hour from Llao Llao. The lake views in front of the hotel were stunning. We highly recommend this little hotel.

We arrived at the Plaza Patagonia, after taking the Lakes Crossing from Puerto Varas in Chile, the time was getting on for 9.30 PM and we were looking forward to getting into our apartment and dumping the luggage, the coach dropped us off outside what appeared at first glance to be a small cafe and craft shop, I initially thought it must be wrong, but I noticed the apartment sign outside and was reassured we had arrived at the right place. We were greeted in a very friendly fashion and were quickly checked in and shown to our apartment, which was located above the cafe area, I believe there are four self contained appartments, each with bathroom, cooker, refrigerator and all the kitchen utensils you would need, there was also cable TV. The bathroom was clean and spacious and had a bath with overhead shower, a sink, toilet and bidet. The apartment, in keeping with the rest of the building was very clean and tidy and felt like a home away from home. There was four of us staying in the one appartment, but as it seemed so big we never felt we were crammed in, there was one bedroom on the first level with a double bed and a wooden staircase going up to the other bedroom which had twin beds, there was even a safe built into the cupboard to offer even more reassurance and a safe place for passports and other valuable items. After dumping the bags we went back downstairs and asked for a recomendation of somewhere we could get some food, again we were treated in a very warm and friendly way and recommendations were soon given, which proved to be as good as was promised. The following morning I opened the blind in the bedroom and was greeted to a wonderful view of Lake Nahuel Huapi and the snow capped mountains behind it. Breakfast was included in the price and was an excellent start to the day, not too heavy, consisting of croissants, toast and jam (Rose Hip Jam to be recommended) with juice and choice of tea, coffee or chocolate, all served in the cafe. The apartments are situated about 6km from Bariloche, which was only a 10 - 15 minute bus ride away, the bus stops right outside the apartments, going both into and out of town, and was very reasonably priced. The staff were very friendly as I have mentioned before and were always happy to answer questions about local attractions, restaurants, they even helped organise a fishing trip on one of the local lakes.
Downstairs from the appartments was a computer with free internet access, I believe the appartments offer wi-fi but we didn't have any equipment with us to test it. The cafe is open from 8.00 AM until 9.00 PM and serve some excellent food and drink, we had lunch there a few times and enjoyed a good selection of local beers and fresh juices, as with the food, all freshly made. The craft shop which was joined to the cafe offered a nice selection of locally made items, books, items of clothing and art related items.
This is definately a place I would recommend to others, it's a very friendly and warm place, and located in a good position, the ski centre of Cerro Catedral and the Llao Llao resort are close by. I suppose the only small critisism is that the apartments were situated on a busy main road and as such you did get the inevitable traffic noise, but this didn't detract from the overall experience. Considering the price we paid, we had an excellent deal and I look forward to returning one day in the future.
