I can't say enough about how perfect our entire experiene was with Yami and Pedro at Casa Horizontes. The accomodations, incredible view were one thing, but what really made our visit to Drake Bay special was Yami and Pedro's hospitality. They were eager to help arrange tours to local restaurant recommendations and transfers --and truly cared about our every day experience. We were only with them for 4 days--but will miss them!

Pedro found us on the beach and drove us the short but steep trip up where we were staying near the main house: the "Casa Bosque" or "Forest House". It doesn't look like much upon arrival besides being adjacent to some trees near the driveway and having an elevated, inclined ramp walkway leading to the door. Inside is an airy cabin with a double bed, two twin beds, an adjoining bathroom and kitchenette. There's two big windows and two ceiling fans, the latter we used on high basically the whole time while inside during the day because it was so hot. The view from the balcony is gorgeous, looking kind of north out over Drake Bay. It's relatively secluded, with lots of vegetation and trees, which on the second day meant we had a bunch of monkeys jumping from our roof to branches right next to us. It was stunning to see them so close, and I've shared a picture of them and a big iguana that was constantly hanging out in one of the trees. The sounds of the birds and forest are almost constant which I loved. We were warmly greeted by Yami, the hostess, and she suggested we connect via whatsapp so she could help arrange tours or answer questions which was nice. She got us a couple spots on a snorkel tour the next day even though it had seemed they were all booked up, which was super helpful. We arranged breakfast timing and whether we wanted gallo pinto or pancakes that way, too. Yami, Pedro, and the rest of the staff are kind and accommodating. I need to lose some weight so the short walk up the steep hill a couple times a day got me closer to that, but since it's so steep and someone in a wheelchair wouldn't be able to access the Casa Bosque I wanted to make a note of it. Overall you do feel like you are suddenly away from the beach and high in a forest, and for the nature immersion alone I'd give it 5 stars. The hospitality was excellent and room had what we needed to ensure we could make the most of it. Thank you Yami and Pedro!

I really enjoyed staying in this hotel. My sister and I booked Casa Bosque room with a kitchenette and a porch that overlooks the ocean of drake bay. It is set on a hillside and as we were there for birding, it did not disappoint. After our tours we would sit on the balcony and watch birds while relaxing. The room was immaculate and had nice wood floors with 3 beds. The large windows were screened in and there was an electric fan to keep air moving through. There is no air conditioning and with the fan we were fine but it does get very hot and humid here so we were sweating during the afternoons a little. At night, it was no problem. As soon as the sun went down, we actually needed a light blanket since it cools down and we slept really well. The bathroom was perfect with a very large shower (it had really hot water but I only used the cold water while we were there). The kitchen was nice to have for making tea in the morning with a full size refrigerator. The staff kept a large bottle of filtered drinking water in the fridge at all times which after long days of hiking in Corcovado was needed. This hotel is set on a step hillside. The walk to the beach where all the boats set off for any tours to Corcovado or Cano island was very short-about 3 -5 minutes. The downside for some people is it is a steep incline down and up. I did not mind since I wanted the exercise and everyday we saw a pair of Mot Mot's on the walk. I also liked the fact that since it is set up higher, the view was magnificent of Drake Bay and set in the trees. We saw so many birds and white face monkeys at this hotel. The beds were comfortable and they were of different firmness so there should be a comfortable bed for everyone. The mosquitos were not bad while we were there but I did use the mosquito netting at night just in case. I rarely used insect spray while there. Yami and Pedro who own Casa Horizontes were really amazing. They were very accommodating as was Martin, who helps out. Since most of the tours from the beach leave at either 6am or 7am, they were so great by having a magnificent breakfast ready very early (I have not been to a hotel that worked breakfast around our schedule such as 5:30am). The traditional breakfast is very good and it is extra but well worth the money. If you like quiet and a serene setting this may be a place for you. The town is also only about 10-15 minute walk max. Keep in mind that people with difficulty walking up and down a steep hill may have trouble but the town does rent ATV 's. My sister and I really enjoyed staying here.

After a long dusty drive we arrived at Casa Horizontes, To stretch our legs, we walked out through their beautiful garden to a charming picnic table with the most captivating view across Drake's Bay; it was pure heaven. Our rooms were clean, well-equipped, and charming and we made great use of our beautiful deck overlooking the sea. We were hot and hungry and asked the hosts if they would make us dinner that evening and huevos rancheros for breakfast, and they happily agreed. Both meals were scrumptious and served on the lovely picnic table with a million dollar view. Later that evening, my cell phone was missing and I realized I left it at the bar in town. It was late, maybe 9 p.m., but Pedro insisted on driving my husband into town to help him find my cell phone. It was still there - thank you Pedro! Pedro and his wife were just such beautiful people, go see them, the garden, and beautiful Drake's Bay.

We stayed in Casa Horizontes for a couple of nights and enjoyed the beautiful view on the terrace, looking down over the garden and tress onto the sea. Very yummie breakfast and Yami and her staff are super nice hosts. And it’s a great location for starting your trips around the area. Climbing up that little hill to get to the BnB is worth it.

We booked a 4 night stay with Casa Horizontes. Prior to arrival, they were super helpful with information and also to helo coordinate our transfer from the airport. Upon arrival, the room we were in (Mot Mot) was in the main house and as it turned out, they had rented the rest of the house to one family. That meant that the common spaces were closed and we had to have breakfast in our room. Additionally, the guests they had rented it out to had small kids that were extremely loud starting at 5am and throughout the day. It was so bad that after two nights, they refunded the remainder of the stay and we moved elsewhere. So it's hard to rate. The family who owns this property is amazing - they were kind and careful, and helped us find a new place. The Mot Mot room is pretty basic - the noise was loud (but perhaps would be less bad if you didn't have kids staying directly above), there was a bit of a smell in the room as well. The hot water in the shower didn't work. That said, the view was good and there was air conditioning. Ultimately, the family who owns this property gives 5 stars service and I'm sure it's better if you have your own villa and the common area is opened for breakfast. But given our experience and the hassle we had with moving, 3 was all I could do.

Located on a hillside about 200 metres from the main beach, Casa Horizontes is nestled in the jungle and offers a spectacular view of the bay. There are several rooms in the main house, and two stand alone casas on the hillside. On the recommendation from a friend we stayed in Casa Bosque, immediately adjacent to the main house, and were thrilled with our choice. To be clear at the outset, this is a rustic stay - which we seek out whenever we travel. If you’re looking for an “all mod cons' ' North American/European style accommodation Casa Bosque is likely not to your tastes. But if you’re looking to immerse yourself in a stunning natural setting with good creature comforts, a small kitchen, a private balcony, wifi and amazing hosts then Casa Bosque is for you. A good portion of our time was spent sitting on our private balcony taking in the natural beauty around us. The balcony has a small table with two chairs (where we ate our meals), two lounging chairs, a rocking chair and a hammock. Situated high on a hill the Casa and main house give great views into the distance. Our balcony had perfect north and east-facing orientations, making for spectacular sunrise viewing, and stunning vistas of the bay all day. Even rain storms are great on the balcony as the overhang is built far out enough that we always stayed dry. It’s worth coming with binoculars to get a good look at the wildlife that pauses in the jungle as it passes by. Our sightings of various wildlife are too numerous to list here, but highlights included being serenaded by three Toucans, enjoying visits from resplendent Macaws, getting up close and personal with numerous Hummingbird species, and watching a large, adult Green Iguana feeding in the trees a few metres from our balcony railing. The beds are comfortable, and while there is no air conditioning the ceiling fans are surprisingly effective. We actually found it too cool to sleep under them when set at anything other than the slowest speed. While the beds all have elegantly hung bug nets, we didn’t find it necessary to use the one on our bed. We were surprised to find that there were very few biting bugs out and about during our September visit. It is a jungle though, so it’s a good idea to keep the windows and doors closed while the lights are on at night so the interior lights don’t attract every flying insect in the area! And don’t forget that every forest and jungle has bats, and while they’re great for insect control you probably don’t want one inside your casita in the evening! Casa Bosque has a small, rustic kitchen. It is equipped with a two-gas-burner cooktop (that burned very hot), an electric kettle and small drip coffee maker, a rice cooker and a full size fridge with freezer. There were basic pots and pans, glasses, coffee cups, plates and utensils available, and the main house had a very well equipped kitchen with lots of other cooking implements we were welcome to use as long as we returned them clean (*Note: we were welcome to use the main house kitchen to prepare meals as well, but we didn’t take advantage of that kindness because we found our kitchen quite up to the task). While simple, the kitchen served us well as we cooked both breakfasts and dinners, venturing out only for lunches. The kitchen is actually next to the balcony and is open to the outdoors. This allowed us to enjoy the sounds of the jungle while we prepared meals. The only major shortcomings were a lack of food storage containers for leftovers (we tried to keep takeout containers from restaurants for this purpose), and not having a rack to drip dry dishes. The tap water is not drinkable here but the hosts provide six litre jugs of filtered water as often as needed. Because we were cooking we asked for a second jug each day and they were happy to oblige. The closet space here is limited so pack light (it’s hot hot and humid so light clothing is all you need). Yami, our hostess, graciously ensured that our laundry (and some mending) was done during our stay - all at no charge (she really is too kind!). A note about sink laundry; it’s a bit of a challenge as it can take up to three days for clothes to dry - we know because we tested it! There are no drawers here for small items, so it’s a good idea to use packing cubes so you can lay things conveniently on a shelf or one of the two single beds if someone isn’t sleeping in them! Use pouches to keep your other sundry things organized. There isn’t a lot of hot water here. It takes a long time to come through the tap, and then lasts only a short time. During showers it doesn’t matter so much - the water is nice and tepid, so it’s refreshing on a hot day while still being comfortable. For washing dishes it’s a challenge though. We boiled two or three kettles of water to get our dishes nice and clean, as well as rinsed off. Just another part of rustic jungle living. It’s important to note that walking up and down the road that leads to Casa Horizontes is tricky. It’s steep and requires a patient pace (particularly on the downslope) with careful footing. Our visit was during the rainy season so it was particularly important to take great care on our daily treks up and down the hill. There’s a section with flagstone steps and a low handrail, but for the most part the road doesn’t have such supports. Bring shoes with really good grips to make this journey - we found our Keen sandals managed reasonably well. However, after a couple of days we took the advice of a local friend and bought rubber boots with superb treads and they were a game changer. The boots served us well on our tour of Corcovado National Park, on a guided night hike, and on our various jungle hikes. Suffice it to say that the $40 CDN was a worthwhile investment. If you’re visiting during the rainy season we highly recommend taking this approach. Finally, one of the best parts of staying at Casa Horizontes is the hosts. Yami and Pedro, along with their daughter Gloriana, are incredibly sweet. When they realized we loved to cook they brought us herbs from their garden. They checked in on us through What’s App during storms to make sure we were comfortable. They made a delicious jug of fresh lemonade as a welcoming gesture, and we loved it so much we kept asking for more throughout our visit, and they joyfully obliged. Yami will arrange for all your tours if you wish, and will ensure that your boat to-and-from Sierpe is booked. We even cooked dinner with them in the main house and enjoyed a lovely evening of conversation. They are genuinely good people and deserve every measure of success life offers them. Other Notes: It’s a short walk into town to visit the three MiniSuper grocers, as well as a stand-alone produce provider (which has the best produce in town). We soon learned that each grocery store carried certain items, and that prices for things like wine and rum varied widely from store to store. To be clear, they’re more expensive than you’re likely accustomed to, and high demand items like beef and cheese sell out quickly after being restocked, but that’s to be expected given the town’s isolated location. During our September stay (one of the slowest months for visitors - October being the other) there were only four restaurants open, and only two of those routinely attracted other diners (the third was, frankly, a bit sketchy so we never went in). Although there were only two restaurants open they were all we needed. The beach at the bay is pretty quiet unless there are small boats landing but it’s long enough you can find spots away from the landing sites. Cocolita Beach is a secluded, stunningly beautiful spot about a 45 minute walk from town along a pretty jungle trail. There are a couple of challenging parts to the trail, but they’re short; for the most part it’s an easy walk and getting to the beach is well worth it. Pack water, some snacks, towels and something to read and you’re set for the afternoon if you’re so inclined.

Absolutely gorgeous view of Drake Bay, comfortable beds, relaxing sounds of the jungle & crashing waves with convenient location near town and a short path down to the bay. Yami and Pedro are so kind, welcoming, & accommodating! The breakfasts are delicious, filing, and made to order at whatever time is needed! They are readily available to provide helpful information. Also, they were extremely understanding of our special needs son. We would highly recommend and can't wait to return!

We had a lovely stay at Casa Horizontes. The setting and view are spectacular. It sits perched above the bay in the thick of the jungle where you are surrounded by a constant bird symphony. The inn and its furnishings are constructed of beautiful natural wood and all built by host Pedro. Our room was immaculate, with a very comfortable bed and air conditioning. Yami ( the hostess) is a delight. They were both very warm and helpful-served delicious coffee, and healthy and yummy breakfast and dinner on request. They were easily accessible yet we felt we had also had our privacy. * Best to book directly from their website! *
