Overall Verdict - This is probably one of the most difficult reviews I've ever written, as the good/bad about this place is mostly about you, as a traveller, and not the lodge itself - All in all, if you're ok with roughing it up a little (e.g. having a scorpion crawl over you while sleeping) and are looking for a place to get in touch with nature, look no further! Hotel & Rooms - Hotel grounds are beautiful, situated directly in the jungle… - …BUT you have to expect a very rugged, no luxury experience - Lots of wildlife on the property (Monkeys, birds, squirrels, etc.) & lots of flowers and herbs and fruits directly on the property… - …BUT rooms are not (!) 'sealed' to the outside; there are actual holes in the walls and critters WILL come visit you Food - Honest, down to earth, tasty food Location - Truly remarkable area, close to the most beautiful beaches, directly in the jungle; one of the most amazing places we've ever been… - …BUT it's really far away from town and the roads are bad and even from the ferry drop-off point, you have to hike 25 minutes to get to the resort; not the most convenient place for tours to Corcovado (but Guillermo can arrange pick-up!) Activities - No activities offered by the lodge itself, but Guillermo can arrange everything! Most importantly, of course, a trip to Corcovdao - There are several hiking trails that we can absolutely recommend… - …BUT don't let the locals fool you: the hike to town doesn't take 1h, it takes 3h one-way Other - For context: stayed here as a family of three with a six year old boy - Recommendation: On your last day, instead of taking the ferry back to Sierpe, book a Mangrove Boat Tour; most operators will be happy to drop you off in Sierpe and that way you can combine the logistics of getting back with an amazing experience - I just wanted to highlight again that Guillermo is an amazing person; we caused him a lot (!) of trouble/inconveniences, but he didn't just handle it professionally, but in a gentle, friendly, caring way; this is, in its own way, by far the best 'service' that I've ever received, just that it felt more like staying with friends Thanks again, Guillermo, for your patience

This is a family run business. The owner’s wife does the cooking and the food is so good! The owner picked me up at the airport and brought me back. The ride is slow because the road is uneven. He pointed out a sloth and birds along the way. The property is beautiful. A little piece of heaven. There are 4 cabins on the property. People were mostly from Europe. You have to walk uphill to get there and the trail cement gets slippery. They carry your luggage up to the place. If you want to go to the beach you have to walk up and down. It takes about 10 minutes. What I didn’t realize about Drake Bay is that where you stay is really where are you will be. I went birdwatching and horseback riding and they were all around the property. I saw toucans everyday from my hammock on the porch of my cabin. So many other birds just while eating my meals. They made all the arrangements according to what I wanted to do. They are so friendly, helpful and really care. The national park is nice but I think I enjoyed my other experiences more. It rains a lot so bring a book or just get use to being wet. The accommodations are simple, clean, no bugs like one reviewer said. It is not fancy but not rustic.I can’t say enough about how wonderful this place is. They do everything with heart. So beautiful! The highlight of my stay in Costa Rica! Thank you!!!

Amazing location very close to the forest and beach is very close. Everyone is extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. Food was so good and home cooked. They take you to the beach to get onto boats and even carry your luggage for you when you arrive and leave. The bungalows are great and stay cool all day.The views of the garden of the forest are ti die for. They helped us organise tours before we for there and the tours were also really good. The best part was having breakfasts with the hummingbirds. We also saw monkeys, Toucans and plenty of other birds from our hammock. Thank you to everyone for making our stay so wonderful

The service and attention from Guillermo before and during my stay was outstanding. The location on a hillside is fabulous with lush tropical forest all around, and in the clearing of the hotel ground there are lots of palm trees and colourful flower bushes with exotic birds. Just few minutes walk to a nice quiet beach with beautiful views of Drake Bay and to the sunset. My bungalow was wonderful, spacious and flooded with lights through large windows, and outside fitted with both lounge chairs and - the best of all - hammocks on the terrace with view down to the ocean. The time spend in the hammock with that view, watching the birds and enjoying the quiet, was the best in Costa Rica and a memory I'll cherish forever. The attention to details was amazing in everything, and for that reason I consider this a high quality boutique hotel: From the flower decoration on the dining table, to the tropical decor in the room with dolphin and flower art and pretty cushions - and a marvelous shower, the biggest I've seen, with beautiful blue tiles. Having natural light in the bathroom is a rare privilege, and the many shelves to put things were so convenient. The food was delicious - I was very positively surprised by such high culinary standard at such a small place. The restaurant terrace with view was a delightful chapter in itself: Cold and hot water as well as tea and coffee always available, and so was binoculars and nature/bird information to truly enjoy the natural surroundings. A comprehensive guide book to the country was very handy , I got a lot of helpful travel tips from that. I loved the very homely family atmosphere. EVERYTHING was flawless. And I still wear and enjoy the beautiful handmade necklace I bought there. Finally, a little sweet experience that very nicely describes what this place is all about - kindness: I had ventured out without shoes before I realised that my bare feet did not go well with the otherwise fine track to the hotel. Then a little local boy came and handed me his plastic shoes so I could get comfortably back to the soft lawns of the hotel ground. Still warms my heart and makes me smile to think about. The customer is truly at the centre here, the service ambitions are very high - and successfully met! This is truly a hidden gem, I loved every second, it was my best experience in an already perfect vacation in Costa Rica, and I hope to be back. For now I wish Guillermo, Isak and the whole family the best of luck, you definitely deserve it.

I stayed at the Sunset Tucano Lodge for 5 nights and all I can say is that their hospitality was by far the best I ever had. Guillermo, Isaac and his family, will make everything posible to make your stay comfortable and pleasant. Starting from the delicious food, and its schedule flexibility to the tours assistance. I felt blessed while hearing the ocean during the night, the sounds of the wildlife, the tropical jungle, the sunset, the sea, and the familiar environment. I was in paradise. One day I went hiking on the trail and they were so nice by packing me some food as lunch. They even gave me a hammock so I could chill at San Josecito's beach. Always concerned about my well being and aware of my necessities. I had the best tours (kayak and horseback riding) thanks to their suggestions. If you are looking for an amazing time in Drake's Bay and Corcovado's surroundings, the Sunset Tucano Lodge is definitely one of the best options.

A lovely place with views of the ocean from our room. You're really in the jungle. Our stay from February 6- 10, 2020 was most memorable. The BIG downside was that we were "shocked" when we received our bill at the end of our stay. For example, we were charged $50.00 US dollars for a 6 mile car ride by the owners to the facility. We were never told in advance that there would be a charge, yet alone that it would be $50.00. We were also charged $6.00 for each glass of wine we had at dinner. We were not told there was any charge for the wine (meals included plan) until we checked out and received the bill. Even then, in a review of the bill, they charged us for more glasses of wine than we had. We were charged $293.75 (VAT of 13% included) per night for our cottage. While we had the nicest of the three cottages, another guest told us he was paying $65.00 per night for the smallest of the three cottages while another guest told us he was paying just over $100.00 for his cottage. Since we didn't have enough cash to pay the bill, the owners arranged for us to go to a local market they "work with" where we had to use our charge card to pay approximately $900.00 (U.S). The store they referred us to charged us 13% just to charge the money we "owed" to the Sunset Tucano Lodge. WE FEEL WE WERE FINANCIALLY TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BY THE OWNERS. For that reason we would not recommend the Sunset Tucano Lodge. Jim and Barbara (United States).

We stayed here for a week and loved every second of it. The host family is incredibly kind and will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. The cuisine is fantastic and varied. The beach is simply beautiful, as are the resident toucans. We can also heartily recommend the whale watching tour they offer.

If you want to visit Corcovado, this is a great place to stay. The owners Guillermo and Isaac will go out of their way to be helpful. Book your stay with them and then have them book your ferry transfers and tours. They also (for an extra fee) did their own night tour of the grounds that is well worth it. Note the cabin is up a hill so be prepared for a 10 minute walk after getting off the ferry, however, they carry all your bags and are so welcoming. They preferred to be paid in USD and there are no ATMs in the area so bring money with you. Meals are included and let them know your dietary restrictions as meals are what they make for their families. Lots of toucans and other birds on the property. In general a great stay.

We stayed for 2 nights and were blown away. The sweet family that run this lodge are the most gracious, attentive, loving hosts you could ask for. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The food they cook is delicious and made with love. They use the fruit from their land and the meals are all fresh and home cooked. It was my husbands birthday so on the second night they surprised us with a homemade cake with candles. We will absolutely visit again and I would highly recommend this to anyone. The location is excellent. There is the most beautiful beach at the bottom of the hill which is absolutely gorgeous. Great for a day hike... we saw squirrel, howler and spider monkeys. Just magical. ✨✨✨ Thank you!!!! 🙏😘❤️

We booked 3 nights in the garden room and were greeted at the bay and helped with our luggage. The wonderful hosts speak English but also German, Portuguese and obviously Spanish. We were given help booking a snorkelling trip and trip to the nearby National Park. We were a little nervous staying all inclusive as we are both vegan but were astonished at the creative, fully plant based tasty meals given to us daily. Our stay felt almost like a home stay and we enjoyed chatting with the hosts but we were always given our own space. This lodge is fairly newly set up and I know the owner is keen to make more changes to make your stay as comfortable as possible. A full length mirror would be nice in the garden room and although the shower doesn’t get that hot it’s still refreshing considering the 35 degree heat. Overall loved our stay, friendly and welcoming hosts and peaceful location. There is a short walk of 10-15 mins involving a steep hill so maybe not suitable for those with mobility issues however the hosts help carry your luggage
