My husband and I stayed at La Calets for 3 nights. Already from our check-in to our room, there were a few problems: 1. There was no hot water. The technician came a few times to fix it. In the end, it was hard to adjust the temperature of the water. It was either too hot or too cold. 2. The door of the room was many times stuck and we couldn't get to our room. On our last night, even the cleaner couldn't get into our room and clean it. They left the towels outside the room on a chair. 3. The ceiling fan didn't work well and it was very hot in the room, therefore, we asked for an additional floor fan so we could sleep at night. 4. I sat on one of their garden chairs and wanted to enjoy the view but when I stood up one of the chair arms came off and I got injured from the 2 nails. From check-in, I asked to move to another room but they offered me a room for 2 nights and then I needed to move to a different room. The room that they offered me had a bathroom that it's not connected to the main room. of course, I didn't accept this offer. I'm not recommending staying in this hotel.

PROS: Outstanding staff, specially Daniel, the manager, who is the soul of the place. Great location and views. CONS: This place is definitely NOT a hotel or lodge, it is an old camping with tents and different sized cabins, no comfort at all - no space to move or even leave your stuff, intermittent hot water, irregular wifi and most important: no air conditioning and/or pool , which is absolutely necessary in these areas, as heat and humidity are terrible. No way to cool down after a jungle tour or even a short walk. It is impossible to dry your clothes in days. Talking to other people we found out that almost all lodges in the area do have aircon, some of them also a swimming pool. We left a day earlier than planned because of this. Very poor value for money.

Response from Jolanda Hess, Dueño at Las Caletas Lodge
Responded 24 Apr 2023
Thank you for taking your time to give us your feedback on your experience at our lodge. We are sorry to hear, that we were not the best option for you, but as you mention, there are several hotels in Drake Bay that offer AC and/or Pool and the BOOKING.COM website offers great tools to choose a place that meets your expectations. We will check with our team on the part of your comment that we can improve immediately (intermittent hot water, etc.). We are a lodge with a privileged location surrounded by rainforest and wildlife, focused on eco-tourism and respecting our environment.

We had been looking forward to this trip for a long time and we were not disappointed. Daniel and the staff were on point with the service and went the extra mile nothing was too much. Eduardo the chef prepared a great menu every day and was always busy making cookies. If you have booked here you won't be dissapointed as its further out from drake so more secluded and you can walk into town in 40 mins easily.

Fantastic place to wrap up our Costa Rica trip!!! The lodge offers simplicity with fine food, so the focus is on nature and enjoying a peaceful life. Daniel is a charming and accommodating host, full of good cheer and helpful information. Eduardo is a terrific chef, far better than I would have expected in such a small resort. While lying in the hammock, I was able to watch the parrots that nest in the tree above, and the pair of scarlet macaws nesting in a nearby tree. Howler monkeys create background music, and the colorful flowers are a feast for the eyes. We were the only Americans there during our 4-day stay, the others were French, German, or Swiss. We swam several times in the warm water of the bay, just down from the cabins. My friend and I shared a bathroom but had separate bedrooms in a duplex cabin with balcony, which worked well. Through this lodge, we booked trips for snorkeling at Caño Island (super!) and guided walk at Corcovado NP - both convenient because boats picked us up right at our own beach. I have been recommending Las Caletas Lodge to friends already. To me, the accoutrements of pricier resorts (pool, A/C) would have done nothing to improve my experience. This place is not fancy, but it has all of the important features. Note that water landings anywhere on the Osa Peninsula are not for the frail. (We're in our early 70s but are very active.) I would this lodge give six stars if I could.

We went here 15 years ago and was worried it would not hold up to the amazing standard it set back then. I'm probably one of the first to review this place. I'll tell you it was almost better. Las Caletas is really a paradise and I love it so much. I was reading some other reviews and here are a few things that might detract others. 1) It is a hike to get up to the property, and only accessible by a challenging boat ride or hike, if you have any mobility issues this place is not for you. 2) It is HOT and HUMID and there is no AC, so if this is an issue for you, choose elsewhere 3) There is only one dinner time and it is at 7pm. While this is typical for me in the states, in Costa Rica I was getting up at 5/6am and then going to bed at 8pm. So I would be eating an amazing dinner and then going right to sleep. While this would have been no issue in my 20's, this was a little difficult for me in my 40s!

We stayed for 3 nights at Las Caletas and loved every minute of it. Las Caletas is in a stunning location with views on the pacific. We have seen beautiful birds on the property. Our cabin (nr. 6) was airy, light, comfy and very clean. Daniel is a great host and Eduardo as chef serves you great meals. For us this place deserves nothing less than 4 stars. We highly recommend it to everyone.

You arrive at this eco-lodge on Drake Bay by boat, greeted by staff who whisk bags up the stairs to the perfect location for a beautiful view of the Bay. The food is fresh, delicious and well presented, the rooms are comfortable and you sleep to the sound of the ocean. Paradise!

What a fantastic place! My husband and I stayed here for a week at the end of November and it was amazing. An adventure from start to finish. Everything about it was awesome. The monkeys that came through the trees right outside our room, the birds that were everywhere, we did the snorkeling trip which was fantastic, the path down along the beach was fun to walk. And the hotel was wonderful. Jolanda was so helpful with booking tours and transportation to and from the airport, Daniel is so friendly and helpful, he makes you feel like his only concern is that everything is perfect for you, the food was so good for every meal, Eduardo is an amazing chef, Julio was fun, friendly and informative, explaining about Costa Rica’s history and beliefs. We can’t wait to go back!

We spent 4 days at Las Caletas Lodge in March 2022. This is definitely not a luxury lodge - but we felt perfectly looked after all round and would recommend the lodge at any time. The location is perfect: just above the beach with a great view of the sea. The jungle path in the direction of Corcovado and Drake Bay offers impressive scenic impressions and a variety of animal sightings. The highlight is the red macaws! The quality of the food is exceptional. Every evening there is a lovingly prepared 3-course menu. The bread for breakfast is home-baked and tastes very good. Water can be tapped at any time. The bungalows are rather simple, but adequately furnished and above all very clean. The manager Daniel was the good soul of the lodge. Always in a good mood and helpful - wonderful! Thank you very much for a great time at Las Caletas Lodge.

So many great things about this place. The location is about 40 mins walk south of town and another hour further south are great beaches San Josecito and the Rio Claro. The Lodge is perched on a landscaped hilltop overlooking the ocean. The cabins are cozy and a bit dated but clean and well kept. All the food is excellent as cooked by chef Eduardo, and Daniel is about the best host anyone could ask for. His enthusiasm and care comes thru in every interaction. Such a helpful guy. The local wildlife is plentiful from the sloths to the Macaws and parrots. A freshwater pool would make this a bit nicer to hang out during the heat of the day, otherwise the beach below is accessible, but no for timid swimmers.
