Superb view, gorgeous home, i vould hear the waves going to sleep and waking up. Very hospitable staff, Odilia and Edwin were wonderful. I would return in a heartbeat. Delightful touches like bringing a canoe for me randomly. It felt like a family. You can really relax here.

Georgie, the property manager, was more helpful than we could have imagined. She graciously spent time helping us plan activities and find tour guides and shuttles around the lake. Danny, and the rest of the kitchen staff, were so kind and made delicious vegetarian food for us. I cannot recommend this place enough!!

This secluded beautiful, eco friendly hotel made us feel like we had a family of staff looking after us. From making sure we were comfortable from the beginning to attending to every one of our needs. The manager Georgie was amazing in helping us organize our activities so that it was relaxing and fun for us. Danny made amazing vegetarian food that we were always excited to eat. Highly recommend this place and we will miss them

The highest room is approx. 200 m above lake level. Keep in mind that you have to go up and down several times a day. We stayed there for one week. The biggest problem for normal tourists, who want to visit the places around is the difficult / expensive transport by boat. The hotel does not offer free transports which would be necessary. It might help to clarify the possibilities on the route Panajachel to San Lucas de Toliman. In most cases the captains were ready to stop at Kaalpul for a small extra amount. Ask Emilio for help.

Thank you for your kind feedback. We provide transport from San Antonio Palopó to our Hotel and it is included in our fees. Nevertheless, the lake is rather big and although it seems towns are close to each other, in reality there are considerable distances between them (thus, the pricing for boat tours). We encourage our guests to plan their tours with Emilio our captain, who is always eager to show them around the lake; if the price is not ideal for the guest, we suggest Public Boat service which is effective and low-cost.

PROS: * The food (mostly vegetarian and I am a carnivore) was excellent and service was impeccable. The staff brought breakfast and lunch down to the patio/deck overlooking the lake and everything including the deserts was delicious. * Kaalpul is super quiet and secluded and if you are looking for peace and tranquility this may be one of the best options on the lake. The views from up high and down near the lake are spectacular. * The staff although nonenglish speaking were super friendly and I really enjoyed going out on the lake in the Kayak which is at no cost to guests. Really enjoyed the welcome foot scrub/massage upon arrival!!! * My room was beautifully decorated and the bed was super comfortable. CONS: * I stayed for two nights (Thanksgiving 2018) and they were doing construction so it made for less than a tranquil stay. I would go our during the day in the Kayak and go up to the top tier deck to get away, but it was less than ideal. * The Spa prices were more than I would pay in the U.S. so I declined spending on those services. Twenty five dollars for a 30 minute foot massage seems a bit much in comparison to everything else here in Guatemala. * This is one of the more expensive places on the lake and I could only get very cold or scalding hot water in the shower. I would agree that this is a first world problem, but if I am being asked to pay $150 per night my expectation would be that a temperature controlled shower should be included. * I am fleet of foot and this wasn't an issue for me, but the stairs throughout the property are somewhat treacherous. If you aren't 100% stable on your feet, this isn't the place for you. * The design and/or feng shui of the overall property just seems a little off to me. I am not sure who designed the rooms and property, but it felt like they didn't do it with the thought of providing guests with the best views of the lake, sunset, volcanoes, etc... Weighing the overall pros/cons I would still go back if I was looking for a place that was so quiet you could hear the local fishermen whistle their tunes as the tended to their lines and nets.

Thank you for your visit and thank you for highlighting the best features of Kaalpul Hotel. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay overall and would be happy to welcome you back any time! We apologize for any inconvenience about the construction. The crew was behind schedule and just trying to wrap up before the season was in full swing. It’s unfortunate that it affected your stay. As a token of our apologies, if you’d like to re-book with us in the future, we’ll double your nights at no cost (Ex: pay for 2, get 4, etc). Also, it is true, our property is on hill and is not for persons with mobility issues. We try to make the most of it with plenty of seating areas up the mountain and down below. Also, because of our location, finding building sites for our rooms is a challenge in engineering. Most guests are quite happy that there are good lake views from every single room! Lastly, the shower in your room is our newest and newest water heater. It’s actually quite reliable, albeit very sensitive during the “dial in” process of getting the water just right for each person. We would have been glad to provide assistance on the best way to operate but we apologize for the inconvenience. This is part of the off-grid experience, as is the higher prices for spa services (we literally have to boat our providers over for the majority of services). Again, we hope you will join us again in the future, for an even better, more tranquil stay!
