This ia a 5 star rated hotel in Booking.com I really can't believe that. I can't understand how this hotel got 5 star. The hotel is very poorly desined. There are unfinished construction sites on every corner of the property. The roon are poorly designed. The terrace of my room was shared with a next one and they could see every thing inside my one. To get to the terrace you had to pass through the bathroom. Does not justyfy the prices they are charging. The only positive thing was the restaurant the chef was very good.

PROS: The property is beautiful and well maintained. We loved that the hotel had a waterfront beach bar/restaurant with stunning views of the volcanoes. We were looking for a place to just relax by the lake, and the hotel had 4 large beds/cabanas reserved for hotel guests so this was perfect. There is strong Wifi at the beach bar so I did work there every morning while enjoying the view. The area of the lake by the hotel is clean and we saw many people swimming in the water. We ate breakfast and lunch there multiple times throughout our stay and the food was excellent, along with the drinks. They have an assortment of "American" food (eggs benedict, waffles, burgers, pasta, pizza) and more traditional Guatemalan food as well. The hotel is a 5 minute walk to the main "tourist" area of town where there are more cafes and restaurants. Since the hotel is waterfront, it is not connected directly to the main road. Cars/tuktuks are not able to drive directly up to the main entrance of the hotel, so just be prepared for a short walk from the main road to the hotel itself. If you are arriving via boat, the hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the dock. There are signs for El Dragon Hotel that take you through a "shortcut" in between other properties on the lake, but this path was not well maintained and filled with garbage, so I'd recommend skipping this shortcut and just walking up to and along the main road, especially if you have a suitcase. As usual with any hotel there was daily room cleaning available, fresh daily towels, and extra pool towels to use for lounging/swimming. During out stay we saw the staff constantly cleaning and maintaining the property. Lastly, the cost of the room was so cheap and comparable to some hostels in the area, so for everything this hotel offered we thought it was fantastic value! In skimming through some other reviews, I note that there are complaints about not being able to check-in early and lack of service at the beach bar. We were able to check-in 3 hours early as our room was ready and this was not an issue. We also had great service at the beach bar. The waitress was always present, only disappearing momentarily to grab a food or drink order from the kitchen. I never felt like I had to go find her, although service was occasionally slow when there were several other parties at the beach bar. CONS: We stayed in the Double Room with Mountain View. The Wifi was not as strong in the room as it was at the beach bar. Despite having lots of windows, all of the windows looked out into the common area of the hotel where people/workers walk by, so we did not feel comfortable opening the curtains. Unfortunately this made the room feel dark and smaller than it is. The room is advertised as having a balcony, but it is just a separate entrance through the bathroom that leads to an outdoor corridor shared with the other rooms. The windows and doors in the bathroom are not completely sealed so we had many bugs in the bathroom. The pool itself is tiny and not swimmable by any means. It's really meant for children to splash in, although this isn't much of a problem though as the lake is right there and is great for swimming in.

El Dragon has an unbeatable view, a great bartender and tasty food but unfortunately there are negatives to consider when booking here. Room is basic and charmless but the amazing view allows minor issues such as clogged shower drain, no ventilation, no place to hang items to be overlooked. There are a few ways to get to the hotel and all of them are terrifying after dark. The back side of the hotel is a construction zone. Water is turned off randomly for hours at a time without any sort of notice. Inquiries are met with a shrug. Check in time of 3PM is strictly adhered to regardless of room readiness. Requests for any simple item like a glass of ice or water to wash up when the water was turned off were not fulfilled. Most of these complaints could be solved by a dedicated front desk agent instead of putting the onus on the hard working restaurant employees. It’s a shame as the hotel could really be something special with a little customer service.

The hotel is beautiful and well kept. Private lake front access with a small dock. Sing song birds in the lush trees that surround the property. We enjoyed the quick check in and check out, as well as the loft style bedrooms. Out of the 6 hotels we stayed at around the lake, Hotel Dragon by far had the best in room shower. Our only complaint is the lack of service. My friend and I spend Sunday afternoon lounging by the lake with another couple staying at the hotel. We were all having drinks, enjoying the beautiful views. It was a pain in order to get service. Honestly the hotel was empty, we were some of the only guests staying there. After having to leave the lake area multiple times in order to find someone to serve us drinks, on the third time, no one from the hotel staff was to be found. My friend and I walked next door to the hostel and ordered drinks from them. If Hotel Dragon isn’t keen to take my money, then I’m fine giving it to someone who is.

Loved starting my day with yoga and meditation (self practice) on the deck followed by a yummy breakfast in the restaurant. Top tip: There are yoga classes next door if you prefer to be guided. El Dragon is right on the lake so views of the lake/volcanos are breathtaking. The local ladies who work at El Dragon are so sweet and always willing to help with anything. Great location on the lake. Top tip: if you walk along the waters edge you can get to and from San Marcos Pier/center in 3 minutes. Also has great WiFi connection and was able to easily stream an online course without any problems.

I loved my stay at El Dragon! The rooms are super clean and spacious and the beds are comfy. I had the most stunning view of the lake facing east and loved opening the blinds so I could rise with the sun. The staff is so sweet and attentive, and the food is delicious (such fluffy waffles!). I couldn't ask for a better location - it's right on the water and has a little beach and a pier that is the perfect sunbathing spot. It's also just a short walk to the main strip of the town. I felt safe, and really valued the privacy of the hotel along with it's a convenient location to access all of the wonderful places around San Marcos.

Francisco is the most amazing manager you could come across. Exceedingly helpful. The hotel is situated right on the water front, and is only a 10 minute walk (with small travel suitcases) from where the ferry drops you off at SAN Marcos. Lots of Tuk Turks available if you walk up to the top end of the street from the ferry, but really there is no need. Our room is amazing with a small kitchenette and two bathrooms. More than enough room. Once 9you are here you will find yourself lured to the waters edge to take in the view of Lake Atitlan, and will find plenty of seats available to sit on to watch the sunset. I would highly recommend El Dragon Hotel and Restaurant, so much so that we will be looking at staying an extra night here.

I would give this place a 3.5 rating if I could. 3 says it is average - which it most certainly is NOT and 4 says it is very good - which it is not either. The thing is that the place is lovely:- it's thoughtfully designed, wonderfully clean and a lovely environment to be in. The first problem for us was difficulty booking. We emailed in the m morning to book on New Years Eve and got only one response. We emailed four more times as we were having difficulty making a payment on the website and did not want to go there till we knew there was a room. There were no responses to these emails while the day frittered away. Eventually we got someone who had a local phone (and Spanish) to call and were told there was a room for us. We went across in a water taxi and were greeted by local women behind the desk. They had no English whatsoever and we had very bad Spanish. We eventually worked out payment. My only reservation about the room was that it was beside the reception and there was a door in which I presumed they would lock. I asked about this and was assured that there would be someone awake (we were going to a party next door). When I got back late that night the door WAS locked and I knocked for a while but got no response. Luckily my spouse had gone to bed earlier so I climbed in the window! The following day we relaxed on the very sumptuous lounging beds outside and had an extremely tasty lunch. The food was expensive (for around the lake) but everything was delicious.. Many people had raved about the Key Lime Pie but we were too full to try it. All in all it was a lovely experience in the end but there were so many frustrations on the day of booking. They could do with someone who can answer emails and can speak English when you arrive at reception For the prices they charge you would expect this.

On a day trip to San Marcos we ran across this place and the kid (17 & 20) asked to change plans and stay! We had a great room unfortunately it rained that afternoon / evening so lounging at the beach or hot tub did not happen. We were able to have a great family card game in the commons area listening to the music for the hostile next door! One of the best nights of our trip and breakfast the next morning was one of the best meals of the trip!
