A great place to stay for three nights whilst touring round the Vallee de l'Homme. Friendly and helpful hosts, lovely food, peace and quiet, great views from the panoramic terrace, and proper cups of tea(!). Our only gripes centred on the restaurant which has rather uncomfy chairs and repetitive background music (pleasant classical guitar/orchestral pieces, but when its the same...

Hello Mr Windsor,I am glad you enjoyed your stay and found the Auberge 'good value'.I'm sorry you didn't appreciate the classical music which was John Dowlands' Lute Music.Otherwise on the USB key was Mozart,Bach,Brams and Vivaldi. After a meal in our restaurant our guests can retire to the lounge (salon) in our comfortable leather armchairs and there is no music there!As...

My husband and I are sorry to leave this beautiful Auberge de Castel Merle tomorrow after four lovely days. What a find! It is a little slice of heaven. The setting is breathtaking on a bluff overlooking the Vezere River. We enjoyed dinner on the Terrace and I told Chris and his wife Anita that the chicken in wine sauce...

We had a wonderful four days stay here in spring. The hotel setting is dramatic overlooking the Vezere Valley, in Dordogne. There is beautiful scenery, history and nature at the doorstep. The people, Anita and Chris are welcoming and helpful, and the food in the restaurant is good. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but basic. The hotel is full...

It was difficult to believe that this holiday oasis could live up to the online reviews, but if anything it surpassed them. Idyllic setting, lovely accommodation and delicious food. The only negative is that Chris and Anita made it so terribly hard to leave at the end of a six night stay. Plenty to do locally, but grateful to be...

Wonderful rural location on a clifftop overlooking the Vezere river. Very friendly and helpful owners, the husband is English/ Welsh. Our room was a detached modern lodge on one side of the property. Very simple inside, but comfortable and spotlessly clean.Restaurant for breakfast and dinner was very traditional, with very good food especially for dinner. Service quick and friendly in...

The auberge is situated in a superb position, overlooking the valley of the Vezere and amidst beautiful quiet countryside. Anita and Chris are superb hosts, always making time to chat to their guests, advise on places to visit and with so many interesting stories about the area and it's history.Food is excellent and distinctive of the region, boar stew, cassoulet for...

Returning to Castelmerle for us is returning to something like Paradise. As always our hosts are very friendly and well informed about this very special area of the Dordogne. The view from the garden, where dinner is served, is breathtaking. We love good, solid food and that is what we got. If possible we will return next year. Talking to...

A lovely welcome by the owners and fortunately great weather too so that we could enjoy eating outside that evening. Room 1 is definitely an 'overnight' room and I believe there are larger rooms ( 4 and 5) for longer stays. Room 1 is also over the kitchen and we awoke to a very strong smell of onions cooking! There...

My husband and I spent a week in the Dordogne region of France. I was looking for a remote country inn where we could relax and enjoy a moment without the distractions we live with at home. I came across l'Auberge de Castel-Merle when I was google searching places to stay. The pictures on their site are gorgeous but the...

We,ve stayed here before, several times in fact and that says a lot. In a perfect location overlooking the Vezere Valley, here is the ideal place to relax and enjoy one of the few places on this planet that is in a complete time warp. With Chris's traditionally French, superb cooking and Anita's attention to detail, this has to be...
