++ The Hostel ++
The hostel has 5/6 rooms on 1st floor right above the tavern. The hostel is run by a very nice Greek family who used to live in Melbourne, Australia. The family was very friendly during our visit and as they used to live in Melbourne, I have no problem with communication. The ground level is the tavern which serves breakast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper. The tavern has a fire place (also a cooking oven) which is decorated with old currencies from many countries around the world. The tavern serves excellent food like lamb, chicken and beef all were cooked at the fire place. The tavern also made their own wine.
++ The Location ++
The hostel is located in Kalambaka which is city in Meteora. It's not the closest city to the Monestries but it's closer from the train station. The hostel itself is at the far side of Kalambaka at the foot of the giant rocks. Its far the train station and you will need to walk a bit from the city to the hostel. But once you reach the hostel, the trail path to the monestary is right next to you as The hostel is located right at the beginning of the trail to one of the Monestary. If you are driving, parking is not a problem at all but the hostel is a bit hard to find and you may need to ask the local for directions.
The view from the hostel is fantastic and if you love the rocks, this hostel is closest to them (as close as you get!)
++ The Room ++
Rooms are above the tavern on level 1. There is no lift so you will need to walk upstairs. Before you get to the room, you will pass through a common living area. Each room has its own doors (with lock) and some have private bathroom. We stayed in one of the best room which has bathroom, 1 double bed and 1 single bed with heater. The room is simple but its clean. Room size is adequate and the bathroom is clean as well. Although its only a hostel, the host is kind enough to provide us with the towel !
++ The Tavern ++
If you stay here, you must try the tavern (and even if you are not syaing here - you should !). Its the best restaurant in Greek. The price is reasonably cheap (comparing to other restaurant in Meteora) and the food is excellent. Try the lamb ! You can beat this.
If you are bored, you can read the guest books. Comments from the past guests suggested that your decision to stay here is not wrong. The tavern also has a small PC which allows you to serve internet and a local TV to catch up with hot Greek news.
** What I like about this hostel **
1. Friendliness
2. The Lamb
3. The fireplace
4. The guestbook
** What I don't like about this hostel **
1. The location (a bit hard to find)
2. um ... well its not a hotel
Overall Comment
If you are a bit tight on the budget and prefer to stay in a place that can provide you with comfort as well as friendiness service, then Koka Roka is your choice.
would recommend if you want the real feel of Greece.
A welcome of extreme kindness and simplicity, as at home...
The dishes are excellent, communication easy in English.
ONE address as we like them,
A place we will keep in mind if we return, in any case go without hesitation...
We had a great evening for our last here before leaving.
The lady is great, makes you food when you need it. Athanasios is also very caring. I recommend
Clean rooms, very functional bathroom.
The best part: it’s at the foot of the path to go to the monasteries, and it’s very practical
Very quaint place, local cuisine, very good food, more than fair prices and the lady in the kitchen super cozy!
Recommended peppers and tzatziki!
A glimpse of real life in Kalambaka! Recommended!
The rooms are looking tired and shabby, our window leaked in the rain, the too-small sheets on the bed had been washed to greyness, and breakfast was a joke. Stale bread left over from the night before, which could not be toasted "because the fire is not lit". This is the fire over which last night's meat had been cooked. But why hadn't they bothered to buy a toaster for breakfast? And yet we had to pay Euros 40 per night?
The one really good thing about Koka Roka is its location at the foot of the trail that leads up to the Meteora monasteries. But there are lots of other rooms available in the same are. Our advice would be check out the alternatives before contributing to the Koka Roka's family coffers.
