Travellers' Choice
Bordering the village of Shefford Woodlands, The Pheasant has a hospitality pedigree that stretches back 450 years to when it first sheltered drovers herding livestock from Wales to London. Today, the newly refurbished pub and its eleven en-suite guest rooms offer an adventurous drinks menu, flavoursome modern British cooking, luxurious accommodation with outstanding value - and a warm, relaxed welcome. In January 2016, Jack Greenall became The Pheasant's new landlord and set about launching a new chapter for this well-loved local landmark. A sensitive refurbishment has brought the bar and restaurant a new, relaxed elegance with rich colours, comfortable furnishings and atmospheric lighting. Whether you pull up a vintage leather bar stool, hunker down in our cosy snug with its quirky print gallery and bespoke selection of local and general interest books or join friends at a table in the main dining space, it's a great place to sample our broad and imaginative drinks range and regularly changing menu which showcases the freshest and best local produce and unfussy, flavoursome cooking. Our approach to food is all about bringing together the best ingredients, simply and deliciously. Rooted in classic modern British cooking, our menu showcases the freshest meat, fish, vegetables and fruit and finest artisan products from around the country, while our diverse daily specials let us put local and seasonal ingredients centre stage. And then there's our accommodation, recently added and even more recently refurbished. Our guest bedrooms have all the relaxed, home-from home comfort you'd expect from a country pub, with the minute attention to detail of a smart hotel and a fresh, modern design approach. Elegant fluted armchairs, buttoned ottomans and individually hand-picked artworks are among the characterful features, while bathrooms, two of which have bathtubs as well as high-quality powerful showers, are stocked with indulgent handmade toiletries. All new bookings also include your choice from our full Breakfast Menu.

Quick stop off for dinner on way home from holiday and delighted to find there was an actual vegan menu, rather than vegan dishes listed amongst things like chicken and lamb. This immediately gave us reassurance that the management do their best to please their customers. The food was so delicious, although I would add, the portions were not overly abundant. Staff were friendly and attentive and the restaurant was lovely and posh looking. Highly recommended if you are are discerning vegan who does not eat the usual vegan junk food options of burgers.

Stayed for two nights in October for my birthday, was a great experience. Enjoyed traditional pub mixed with upmarket dining and modern guest rooms. Food was incredible, so much so we decided to dine in the restaurant for both nights of our stay! Enjoyed the ‘snug’ area of the pub too for a few drinks beforehand. Setting is great, but bare in mind that you will need to drive to locations to walk and explore, we recommend Marlborough for some town vibes and East Garston for quaint hamlet scenery and walking.

Party of four and two dogs. Excellent service and amazing food. The best chateaubriand I've ever had anywhere in the world. Generally excellent from booking, variety, decor, friendliness and service. Will definitely be visiting again.

we had room 12. The bedroom was very comfortable but small with an extremely high bed and hardly any storage space , There was a tiny built in wardrobe which was very cold inside so I had cold clothes in the morning . The room was clean and the ensuite was very good - almost the same size as the bedroom. The tea tray only had 2 tea bags and 2 milk sachets which is ridiculous ! We found the room cold to start and struggled to adjust the electric radiator but mastered it in the end. The public areas are nice with a cosy and popular bar. The staff were very good. We would stay again but would go for a bigger room. Good breakfast but very slow as they seemed to be understaffed .

Arrived on Saturday afternoon to a packed pub. Great atmosphere. Staff were brilliant, nothing too much trouble. Our room was spacious, sparkling clean and the bed so comfortable. Evening meal and breakfast both superb. You can tell the ingredients are good quality. The pub has a special feel to it and you leave feeling special. Highly recommended Loved it
