The Longmynd dates from the early 1900s and originally attracted Edwardian visitors to the 'Little Switzerland' of Church Stretton. With a magnificent hill-top location, there are panoramic views of the surrounding hills from the dining room and our lounges. Today the Longmynd has been extensively modernised to suit the needs of visitors. We offer spacious bedrooms, fabulous food and spacious lounges to relax in. Our extensive gardens and woodland walk are both relaxing places to explore.

Ideal location as a base for walks the hotel is on the hill above Church Stretton, and directions to the hotel are good. There is a good parking area at the front. Accommodation - Our room was large with a bed made up of 2 large singles pushed together - softer than we like but comfortable with a good duvet. TV signal was very flaky and not really usable - staff may have been able to fix but we didn't get around to asking. Plumbing old and a bit noisy in the night - intermittent faint knocking noises...Good bath with lots of hot water - necessary after our walks- shower also OK. Food options were good with various meat fish and veggy dishes changing every night - breakfast options also good with smoked mackerel and other special orders available. We asked for stronger coffee and staff responded well. Staff are polite and well-trained. Not 5 star but adequate as a start point for walks - the walking guides were diligent and professional with good knowledge and interest in helping at all times. Information and detailed directions for walks are available and very thorough so we self-guided our walks without issue. We will use HF again and maybe come back to Long Mynd

Although I have been to quite a lot of HF's hotels this one needs more work completing. Already done work on the windows & restaurant area. The issue was with the classic bedrooms. some date from the 1960/70's & it is a lottery whether you get a room which has been updated or not. If you pay a supplement for a premium room that is fine. The next work scheduled is to replace the swimming pool & put a new patio down. I feel as a guest, the rooms should be upgraded first. You can't alter the small bedrooms/bathrooms , but basically white walls with no pictures ,cushions ,bed throws etc & dated furniture ,very small TV 13inches ?. Very few plug sockets. Carpets need replacing throughout. The staff are their greatest asset always willing to listen & help. Until the improvements are made, I will be visiting other HF houses as you pay the same for breaks.

Long Mynd House has almost completed it's renovation. The House is looking wonderful and all facilities were excellent. My room on the 3rd floor was perfectly equipped for a break with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The bed was very comfortable and the en-suite bathroom has a good strong shower and plenty of towels. Breakfast has plentiful and tasty with an excellent choice of hot and cold options. The packed lunches were very good with freshly prepared sandwiches and a great choice of various fruits, savouries and sweet items. Dinner choices were also very good with a well cooked 3 course meal prepared nightly. The Long Mynd staff were, without exception, all excellent. They were friendly, helpful and very professional. Service at table was prompt and efficient, food was always hot and beautifully served. The Discovery Room had a great selection of walking trails which, as an unguided customer, I made use of every day. Whilst I didn't have any guided walks, I did meet with and enjoy the company and conversations of the volunteer guides who were all great company. This is my 1st HF break and as a solo traveller, I will definitely return. The experience was sociable and friendly and it was lovely to have company at mealtimes and share conversations with so many lovely fellow travellers.

Entire hotel covered in scaffolding and thick opaque plastic screening so no views out of the windows. Living in a plastic bag for a week made rooms airless and hot but couldn't open windows as workmen were immediately outside, with associated building noise. HF warned us a few days beforehand but no option given to cancel. Given a free drinks voucher worth £5 per evening but only handed six, we were there for 7 nights. Same holiday is now on offer at 50% off. HF have truly let themselves down with this appalling accommodation. DON'T BOOK IT!!

We chose a "Premium room" just to be sure we were comfortable. A dirty, dingy bedroom, a narrow bed with 4 posts and a tatty bit of red cloth around the top. Damaged ill fitting window looking straight down the car park. Dirty carpets, a strange dark space described as a lounge and a bathroom from the last century. All the furniture and lighting looked like cheap, misjudged auction purchases. This accommodation is totally misrepresented on the HF website. It took five attempts at complaining before we were taken seriously and we were told the manager was on holiday and the room allocation was done at central office. They were not answering the phone at central office. Our only option was to move to a lodge which was in a shocking state too. We managed to close the broken french windows. This place took the word basic to new depths, the bed was still so small it required synchronised turning but there was a lounge we could sit in. Lots of people were muttering about the need for refurbishment but a lick of paint is not going to solve the problems. Good natured, tolerant walkers are putting up with a lot. Some of the carpets in the public areas were dirty and hazardous. The serving staff were polite and helpful and the food was OK. Surprisingly, the towels were very good.

We stayed for 3 nights with 2 days of guided walking on our second visit. All the common areas of the hotel have now been refurbished to a high standard. Our room was one that has not yet been refurbished but was clean and contained everything that we needed. The staff and walks leaders were very friendly and helpful. There was a good choice of freshly prepared food that was better than many restaurants we have been to. The dining room has a fabulous view over the surrounding hills and countryside but it was quite noisy with all the conversation going on!

The repairs have been put back every year for the last five years. Signs of water ingress in the small dining room. According to the planning application work will include destroying the pool and replacing it with a terrace and complete replacement of that face of the building.

A large and somewhat tiara hotel taken over by HF. It was bought in a dry run down state and still needs a lot more refurbishment. It should be remembered that this is for people booking HF walking holidays. If not walking with them may not be suitable for you. Excellent if staying on your own by the communal tables and evening activities. Excellent hard working staff. Real Ale is Ludlow Brewery. Some self catering lodges on site away from site. No single supplement charge if you are lucky.

Thought front door was backdoor. Inside old carpets. Shabby all round. Room had large extraction tube outside sitting on scaffolding. Made huge racket everytime meals were prepared. Window in room neither outside or inner would close, a constant draft. Toilet seat fell off. I repaired it. Mealsin evening worse than school dinners. Cold cod which I could not eat. Went to local restaurant on third night couldn't face a nother offering of that disgusting food. Packed lunches 3 out of 10. Breakfast was the best meal. Didn't like managers joke a out hitting the barman. Was so glad to be out of there.
