We spent several days in this very nice small-scale lodge and slept in a luxurious tree-house. The location is really great: a small island that can only be reached via Maffia island (a complimentary 15 boat trip in a boat made by locals). The lodge is putting a lot of people from the islands only village to work and the...

One reaches Chole Mjini by a 10 minute dhow trip from the island of Mafia, arriving at the Red Herring Bar (with wifi), the only place in Mafia to see the sunset with a drink in hand. The 10 minute walk to the reception area takes you through the old colonial (Arab and German) ruins around which this very eco...

We had already been looking forward to our stay before we came but the time spent in Chole overcame our expectations. Please do yourself a favor and book your holiday here. What we liked: 1. The place and its atmosphere Chole Mjini is a wonderful spot which is completely relaxed and "vacation mood" screaming. There is nothing else but you...

Thanks for taking the time to write this review. It was a delight to meet you both and we have fond memories of your visit to Chole. I wish I could post a picture of our shower located in the garden of each tree house, so that others too can imagine being naked with the birds, under the trees, or...

If you want to get away from it all, literally, this is the place. No wifi unless you take the short walk to the Red Herring bar by the shore. Every meal prepared by local staff. My wife celebrated her 65th there with a candle light dinner. Actually, every dinner is by candle light as there is no direct electricity....

We came to Chole following a week of an amazing safari. We had a group of 8 divers and we were ready for some time in the water and on the island. My friend and I were in Treehouse 2. Overall, it was a wonderful week, with Geoff and Andrea as our guest hosts. They did an incredible job accommodating...

Thank you for taking the time to review our lodge. I'm just sorry I had to leave to join Anne in Cape Town just after you arrived and so missed what sounds like a lot of fun. It's very gratifying to hear that are staff continued to do an excellent job even in our absence. When we are finally redundant...

Chole Mjini was everything we’d been led to expect and more. The tree-houses built around the majestic baobabs; the breeze as you stargaze from your elevated bed; the open air showers complete with hermit crabs; the fresh and inventive meals - taken en famille with other guests and the owners, Anne and Jean, or à deux in various secluded spots...

We spent our 7 night honeymoon here based on a friend's recommendation and it was even better than we had hoped for. Our room was absolutely stunning - we were in 'Moja' and the tree-house is literally built right around a baobab. We had fantastic dives or mind-blowing snorkeling with whale sharks every day. This is what high quality responsible...

We had a wonderfully relaxing time at Chole Mjini Lodge. Highlights included sleeping in a treehouse in an ancient baobab tree, friendly and helpful staff, warm and welcoming management, and utter peace. My teenage daughter and her friend spent all their time exploring the enchanting and safe surroundings, and it was great not to have to worry about them/give them...

We visited Chole Mjini for a 5 night stay and it was a real privilege to begin to get into the rhythm of this magical little island. We have two kids aged 9 and 11 who were enthralled from beginning to end - from the early morning tea and biscuits basket that is hoisted up to your room on a...

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We are especially happy when kids "get us" because they are our future and we are going to really need out of the box thinkers like your kids to engineer us out of the mess we are now consuming ourselves into. Happy travels.

Love that the owners have taken historic ruins and crafted them into a sustainable upscale experience. Love that there is a partnership with the island villagers for training and sustainable development. Love that every building detail is cleverly thought out to harness local materials and capture the local essence and sea breeze. Love the food and evening dinners with the...
