Detailed Reviews
If you're looking for something fancy, this isn't the place. However, if you're looking for quiet, clean, affordable accommodations, I recommend this hotel. For 220 pesos ($17 CAD) for 2 people, you can't go wrong. Sure, the decor is outdated and this motel is older, but it was clean, comfortable and close to everything. Be sure to brush up on your Spanish though or you'll have a tough time communicating with the front desk. Also, make sure you always have pesos on hand since Chetumal is not quite as touristy as other Mexican towns, you likely won't be able to use American dollars.

No one will go to Chetumal for travel. Usually overnight on the way from/to Belize. Hotel Ucum is right for that purpose: cheap(P240 with a bath) and safe. Clean and spacious though spartan. Wifi was tricky: could not connect though the signal was there.
It is centrally located just a few steps from a Market and the Museum of Maya Culture, which is said to be worthy visit. For information, riding a taxi within the city costs P20, to the border P100.

I have been staying here when I am in Chetumal for about 8 years. It's not fancy but it is centrally located by the museum, has courtyard parking, it's clean and isn't expensive. It is now painted a nasty dark green which makes it not very attractive. There is a pool but have never seen anybody in it. It's one of those motel type pools you see in American movies - you know what I mean!! The rooms have two double beds in them and ours had a couple of odd shaped pillows, no towels but on the upside the toilet did have a seat (which is unusual for budget hotels in Mexico). If you try and speak Spanish the hotel staff are usually quite friendly, in fact one time I made a reservation in my terrible Spanish and they waited for me to get in at 2am! If you want fancy don't stay here. If you need somewhere cheap and centrally located to sleep then this is the place.

During this leg of my travels, I had a companion which made options like Ucum a possibility. We split the price of a room and were able to stay away from the backpacker and tourist crowd. We loved this! It allowed us to actually speak with some locals and wander the streets without a barrage of other tourists. I know, I'm a tourist, too!
The pool felt pretty clean. And after a long long walk to Calderitas to find some steamy mosquito-infested Mayan ruins, the pool was PERFECT! =)
We didn't interact with the staff much, but they were helpful when we did. We ate at the Ucum restaurant just outside the main Hotel gate. It was pretty decent tipico food at decent prices.

We had to stay in Chetumal due to an overbooked ferry to Caye Caulker and was recommended this place by the cab driver. We got a simple private room with a bathroom and it was fine. Very basic but at least pretty clean. The desk people didnt really have too much to offer but they were fine. They do have a pool but it was pretty gross looking so we obviously elected not to take a swim. As far as budget accomodation goes, this is a pretty good find at a very reasonable price

It's not the perfect place but it's cheap, comfortable and it has hot and cold private bath with air conditioning, they didn't speak English but it was ok. They even have a pool and it's in the center and close to the market. All this for so little, I felt like I was getting away, if anyone wants to complain then they should go somewhere else because you for what you get. I don't care about being in a perfect world so I stay there a quarter of the times I got to Chetumal.

+1
Other than the seriously grumpy dude who showed us our room, it was ok -- decent, clean, and has a surprisingly nice pool. A short walk to the unexpectedly atmospheric & intriguing Museum of Mayan Culture, which was the only reason we stopped in Chetumal. Unfortunately for us, a bad local rock band was rehearsing -- LOUDLY -- in the building right next door on the night we stayed. They quit before midnight, but it was still annoying. I didn't mind this place, but my partner didn't dig it. Although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, I wouldn't NOT recommend it either, if you really want to stay in Chetumal.

We got into Chetumal after 9PM and we had this hotel highlighted as a possible stop over for a night. Honestly, it was the name that sold us in the beginning. It turned out to be perfect for what we needed and met our expectations exactly. It is located in the middle of the town center, just down the street from our Europcar. The hotel has gated parking, swimming pool (that we didn't use) and clean, simple rooms. A/C and TV optional for a higher rate. We were given two towels (not matching) and two tiny bars of soap with our room key; #16. It's true that the TV lives in a tiny steel cage and has no chance of escape (or kidnapping). Though the AC and fan were reliable through the night. The bed...what can I say...it was there to sleep on; definitely on the firm side - it had a rubber mattress protector, so bed-wetters fear not! And the headboard was nicely painted on the wall. This place is a great place to get cleaned up, rested with temperature control and then move on to bigger adventures outside Chetumal.
Because it was cheap and it was nice and we were only going to stay in Chetumal for about 8 hours.

Hotel was ok, rooms were clean but we had to ask for towels several times, when we got them they were torn and old. They had a pool which was a plus but their bathroom out dated. For one night ok but not longer

Hi Janeen, It really depends on the type of room you want. When I stayed there the most expensive room was $40 a night I think. If you wanted just a room on the street with a fan it would be cheaper and you might be able to negotiate a better price for a longer stay.
