LONG, HONEST REVIEW: My husband and I stayed at the Majestic Colonial from a Tuesday to a Sunday. We used DAT as transport from the airport to the resort. I’d recommend them (close your eyes if you’re afraid of aggressive driving…and it wasn’t just our driver, it was an experience of zero turn signals, high speed lane changes, horn honking and swerving around construction cones), it was so reassuring to be met with someone holding your name on a sign in a foreign country where you don’t speak the language. First impression of the resort was one of awe and excitement. The grounds are immaculately kept, you can tell they put a lot of effort into it. The main entrance is absolutely beautiful. We were immediately greeted upon arrival, our bag was taken and we were escorted to the front desk. I explained that we had booked for the Club side and we were taken to the exclusive Club lounge. There, we were greeted and told to help ourselves to the sparkling wine and snacks offered on the side board. I was a little disappointed to see that the food (cheese, sliced meats, basic hors d’oeuvres) looked like they’d been sitting out a bit too long. It wasn’t hot in there, but definitely not cool enough to just have it lying out. We were checked in (I had completed the pre-check in online, so this was a quick sign in process), and greeted by our butler, Yeferson. He was friendly and gave us a quick tour on the way to our room. We got his WhatsApp information and he was off. It took about an hour for our bags to make their way to our room. The room itself was beautiful. Two beds, a couch, a cot, and plenty of space to breathe. The A/C…it worked, but you have to keep in mind how ridiculously hot and humid it was outside. So the room was cool, but definitely had that damp feel and smell to it. We had a bottle of sparkling wine waiting by the well stocked mini fridge (Coke, diet Pepsi, Coors light, water and chocolates) and the balcony had a beautiful partial view of the ocean. The bathroom features a large central jacuzzi, a huge walk in rain-head shower, and a rather tiny toilet closet. We messaged Yeferson that we’d like a bottle of rum, and asked him to book us reservations for the French and Japanese restaurants. It took him a couple hours to reply, but said that he’d try. You can tell the resort needs a little updating. It’s beautiful, and well kept, but you pick up on the cracked tiles, stained walls, cracked fountains, and out of order elevators. They make up for it with the (mostly) friendly staff and amenities. Almost everyone we passed greeted us with a smile, the bartenders were entertaining and engaged, and the servers in the restaurants tried their hardest to make you happy. (Language barriers are definitely a thing, so if you need something specific, you might want to brush up a little on your Spanish) Restaurants: Main buffet was awe-inspiring, they had a little of everything. Pasta, breads, cheeses, steaks, goat, chicken, salads, etc…I was overwhelmed. Everything we tried was delicious, even the things that we had no idea what they were. We got adventurous and tried things with no labels. That’s definitely a thing…as is not having enough serving utensils for the dishes. One serving spoon or tong was used for multiple dishes. Beach Buffet; when we went, they were out of a lot of dishes (I really wanted to try the seafood paella) and again, not nearly enough serving utensils. You end up standing in front of a section with multiple dishes, just waiting on one person to be done with the serving spoon. The Steakhouse; service was slow and we ended up getting our own drinks from the bar, but the steaks were on point. Sides were so-so, my husband’s potatoes were french fries with sprinkled parmesan cheese and I had the seasonal vegetable (mixed tomatoes, squash and onion). Japanese; we scored our reservation for Saturday. It was fun, but it’s your standard hibachi type show. French; No luck with the reservations :( Seafood; very similar menu to the steakhouse. The food was good, we had steaks and lobster, but again, the service was slow and we got our own drinks. Mexican; We didn’t try since we went to the main buffet on their Dominican Night. McJestic; pretty good burgers and hot wings. It was packed after leaving Coco Disco. We had an amazing time at both the pools and beach. We always found a bed or chair, even if it wasn’t right up by the water. We never had a problem getting a towel, the beach vendors were respectful of “No,” and while the seaweed was pretty bad while we were there, they really do try to keep up with it. The bartenders (with the occasional exception) are very friendly and work as quickly as they can to accommodate multiple drink orders. Entertainment: Casino; small and damp. Only a handful of their slot machines were working and the blackjack tables were full. We didn’t stay long. Shows; they’re entertaining for what they are. The Michael Jackson show covered some of his top hits. The Dominican Show was colorful and flashy. It was just something to do when we got tired of hanging at the bar. Coco Disco; the white walls seemed a little strange for a night club, but the music and dancing were fun. Foam Party; exactly what you’d expect. Combine party music, alcohol, balloons and foam into a large pool…it was definitely an experience. Wi-Fi was generally good, it got spotty in areas. TV stations are 95% in spanish. The only English channels we got were Fox News and Cartoon Network. We only saw Yeferson twice the entire time we were there. Once when he showed us to our room, and once when we ran into him in the club lounge on day 3 (when he suddenly remembered to give us a bottle of rum). He asked us when we were being picked up on check out day. We told him what time and he said he’d have someone there to collect our bags. That was our last interaction with him. I’ve read previous reviews where people said their butler was over the top friendly and accommodating…ours was nice, but I wouldn’t say it was an exceptionally special experience. Check out day…we waited, and waited, and finally just said ok and headed down to the lobby with our bags ourselves, absolutely not a big deal. Overall. It’s an absolutely beautiful resort in a rather poor country. You can tell by the half built buildings, roadside shacks, and deplorable road conditions on the way in. The rooms are spacious, but dated and damp. The food is plentiful, but service is lacking. We drank the water at the restaurants, as well as the bottled water and we didn’t get sick. The pool is HUGE and clean, but the tiles are cracked and missing. They’re trying their hardest, and we are so grateful to be in a position to relax and be pampered. We tipped every server, bartender and housekeeper what we considered well, but the service and attitude varied greatly from person to person. Would we come back to the DR, absolutely…would we stay here again, …probably not.…
Such a wonderful time at the Majestic Colonial for our 2 week honeymoon. The resort was beautiful, the food was great and with the club upgrade with a swim up room, our Butler Reinaldo was second to none. Always so helpful and made our week so special. Definitely going back.
Like what Jan from NJ said....this was/is just an average resort. While the ground keepers work to keep things clean, the resort is very dated and falling apart in places. The room we had had a trail of ants from the patio to the hallway all week. Also came from under the sink. The cleaner was slow to show often arriving around 4pm when we'd be showering despite storing her cart right next to our please make up room sign all day. Not all towels would be replaced. Often the fridge or toilet paper wouldn't be filled. And while the bed was made, it was like a teenager made it because their parents told them to. The AC barely worked....others with us didn't work even after two complaints. We didn't get the welcome champagne or the birthday or anniversary celebrations like we requested. The food is mediocre. Selection is great but often it's cold or undercooked. Staff in the buffets aren't helpful if you don't speak Spanish. One time we were told to go ask another guest's table for a fork because we were short one. As noted in other reviews, there are very few serving utensils in the buffets so sharing is a must. Entertainment is average. Drinks are watered down unless you are a heavy tipper and find the right waiter. Selection of brands to mix drinks with is bottom shelf. Not asking for top shelf but some better brands would go a long way. And the pool is falling apart and often green. While we didn't have a bad time, it's not a place we'd return to. …
I love this resort it was one of my best stays and vacation. The staff is very friendly and welcoming making you feel right at home. The resort is very clean and nice. The rooms are very clean and nice. There's great entertainment each day, music and shows that the staff perform. I love their Michael Jackson show and Dominican Show and enjoyed the foam parties. The food was good and they're a variety of restaurants to choose from. They have a French restaurant, Mexican, Japanese on top of the buffets and snack bar. The resort also has a little club for night life and stores to shop. I took some great pictures on the beach with the little monkey papi chulo, parrot blue yellow and Maria the iguana. I will miss the staff Samy and Black Diamond plus others who made my trip an amazing experience. I will definitely be going back.…
It was our first visit to DR and we already felt like at home. Since the moment we checked in with the help from Alfredo (providing the perfect front desk service with a warm smile, very welcoming and attentive to guest's needs), through housekeeping staff, waiters greeting guests with smiles, to grounds keepers making sure the beautiful plants, palm trees and lawns are lush and green, we are very much impressed every step of the way with Majestic resort. Such a great team, beautiful place, excellent food and drinks combined with the perfect weather already made us dedicated guests for years to come and Majestic promoters in both New York (our home town) and Poland (our family roots). Thank you all for great work and making our vacation a memorable one. Best regards, Peter & Edyta Pfisterer ps - the resort doesn't accept dogs but Eduardo (guest services manager) processed our inquiry regarding our service dog and made sure our arrival and check in went fast and easy. ps - and the honey offered during breakfast cannot be any fresher than this (straight from the bee hive - see picture)! ps - animators team will keep you all fit and entertained from 9am till midnight))…
I was referred to this resort by a travel agent. She thought that it would be a great fit for someone traveling with teenagers. I will say that my kids had a great time but I would never return. The grounds keepers work very hard but the resort is dated and needs a lot of work. Parts of the bridges over the pools were breaking, and the tiles all around the pools are broken and super slippery. I watched so many kids and adults slip and almost fall. The bartenders are also the wait staff for the pool so you would often have to walk to the bar to get a drink. The pool was always filled with lots of debris. The food left a lot to be desired. The buffets were pretty gross! You have to use the same spoons or tongs for multiple items so if you have a food allergy good luck. The food choices are poor and most days I would just eat a roll. I read a lot about people getting sick before leaving. The tables aren't cleaned between guests and I had to ask for a new tablecloth at the main buffet because they sat us at a table full of crumbs. Forget getting a beverage at the main buffet as well. We would sit and wait in both the morning and night. Finally, we started bringing in drinks from the outside bars. The rooms are super dark and don't have enough outlets. The light over our sink was always flashing like a disco light so I needed to leave it off. They never provided hand towels or washcloths EVER! The staff asks you to leave great reviews and will sit next to you while you do it.…
I stayed here on vacation with family. Really enjoyed the stay. The activity staff is great and hard working especially Edgar (Tarzan), Richie and cc’s cola . The bar staff Adderly, “Baby Jesus” and Carolena. They made the trip enjoyable!
We enjoyed ourselves so much at the Majestic Colonial last week. Samy from the Animation Team was excellent. He encouraged my family to join the activities and games. We had so much fun. He made us come out of our shells and have a great time! We played games by the pool and at the beach. We danced the night away. He also made the foam party a great time.
First and foremost, this most definitely is NOT a 4.5 star hotel. Its rooms and some other common facilities are tired and not maintained properly. We arrived after an 11 hour flight and 30-minute taxi journey, tired and just wanting to go to our rooms. We had to wait over 40 minutes for our butler to show us to our room. This process took a further half an hour as we were grouped with other people for the introductory talk, which given some of our group were Spanish had to be delivered in two languages, further delaying our reaching our room. Once we got to our room we found that there was hardly any water pressure in the shower, the sheets were threadbare in places, as were the towels, and the railings on our balcony were downright dangerous. It was not until the second week that the water pressure problem was resolved. Part of the reason for booking this hotel was the promise of "six restaurants, five of which are a la carte". This is nonsense. The La Gourmet restaurant was distinctly average on our first visit. The air conditioning was not working properly and we left feeling dissatisfied. On our second visit, half the items on the menu were not available. We noticed that many people were leaving without finishing their meals. The advertised steak and fish restaurants are not separate venues but are merely part of the same beachside location divided in half. At lunchtime it doubles as a buffet. Our experience is that the service in all facilities in this area was slow. We waited 10 minutes on one occasion to be served at the bar. I suffered food poisoning from the lobster in the seafood restaurant, leaving me unable to leave my room for two days. The food in the Japanese restaurant is excellent, but the show put on by the chefs, though entertaining, precludes any conversation. That left the buffet, where the food was generally good and the staff were excellent. In fact, apart from the beachside area, the staff were outstanding, especially the barman, Leandro. Bored with the food available to us, one night we ordered room service. It was over an hour late and edible owing to it being left under cling film. The spirits on offer were local and of poor quality. Branded labels were sometimes not available. As for the other facilities, the gardens were superbly maintained. If the other facilities in the hotel were as well maintained it would be worth 4.5 stars, but they are not. The lazy river pool is in a poor state, with many mosaic tiles missing, the lifts were frequently out of order (we were on the fourth floor) and stair posts were damaged and could cut someone if they were not alert. The entertainment was okay, though the second week's programme was merely a repetition of the first. Towards the end of our stay we were approached by our butler with an envelope. He explained that he understood our stay had not been as it should have been and that the management wanted us to accept 120 hotel tokens to be used at the spa as compensation. When we opened the envelope we discovered that it contained a form inviting us to sign to say that on our return we would not post anything on social media and, in effect, not complain. We took exception to this negation of our rights and refused to sign. Opinions vary, but there is no way in which this hotel can be viewed as being 4.5 star and we recommend that people do not make the same mistake as we did.…
Party of 24 Checkin - At check in I was told room was not ready and waited 3 hours to get a room. Once In the room the bed had stains and was dirty. I requested to change rooms and was told their were overbooked. We were a party of 24 and booked multiple rooms. They then transferred me to the nearby resort majestic elegance even though everyone in my party was in in colonial. Room - The room at elegance was no better. It was dark had many Stains on the bedsheets and the lamp had been tapped together with electrical tape. The next day I requested to be transfer back to colonial. - The room at colonial was very outdated. The ac worked when it wanted to and you couldn’t regulate the temperature. There was cracks in the tiles and some of the outdoor lights didn’t work. The living room area didn’t have a tv. Instead they replaced it with a painting hanging on a tv wall mount - room service was hit or miss, meaning they would ignore your call and when they didn’t half the order didn’t show up. Food - it was hard to order a drink at an all inclusive restaurant! At the buffet, when the staff would ask if we wanted a drink. They would take the order and never bring the drink. We asked 2 times for drinks and eventually gave up and left. - a few people in our party got sick from the food. They use one utensil for multiple dishes and some food smells spoiled and rotten. - restaurants that require reservations are impossible to get. We managed to get a reservation at the French place and the next day a member from our party got sick from the tuna.…
