We almost didn't stop here: it was a toss up between here and Hveravellir, but thank goodness we took the gamble with the weather which cleared up shortly after our arrival. We were camping, and it got quite busy during our two night stay, but...More
Great camping site. A lot of wind and very cold temperatures, but still great. Facilities have shared hot showers, a few toilets and a shared cooking and eating space (which can get crowded). There is also a restaurant.
Price is 2000 isk per person.
This is a hard one to rate. The facilities are pretty rustic ... The surrounding land is completely awesome and not to be missed ... There are no other close alternatives. That said, we stayed in a little A-frame cabin for four (Nypa 2), which...More
I did the hiking route to the geothermal area and that was stunning !!
I was lucky with the weather and I made probably the best pictures of all my trip.
The colours of mountains are amazing.

We camped at this site so we only used kitchen, restarant and sanitary facilities. Kitchen room was bit old and dirty (users were expected to clean it) so a thick layer of fat had settled on top of the fridge for example.

There are two options for hiking the circle: using the two huts, walk in 3 days, ore tenting. We prefered the huts, you can reservate them at the site from Kerlingjalfjoll (KJF) just send them a mail. The route is poled but we were very happy by using GPS during bad weather. It was hard to find the poles. You need shoes to wade some rivers, this might be dangerous after rainy days because of heavy floating water. You need food for breakfast, lunch and diner from the start till the end! The cabins are basic but beds are good, there is less wood for the stove. First day is about 5 h walking second day 4-5 depending of wading and third day is 8-10 h, depending how slippery the mud is. I can send you the GPS track. At least to learn more about KJF YTube. tonko64 there are videos from each day. (also from other Icelandic hikes).
