We visisted Blue River in July (rainy season) with our two young children. The long gravel road was not as bad as the other reviewers claim. It does take a while to get there but once you get the hang of driving on the gravel...More
The staff treated us so warmly and reliably at this paradise resort. This is pure heaven. The air is so clean, the food is so pure, the water always makes the skin and hair feel just right. My lungs and skin rejuvenated. I never wanted...More

Hola! The staff remember your visit. All of us thank you for your kind review. I also judge the change in maturity of my kids each visit. The many activities and the freedom - they love coming and are always sad to leave.
Takes an HOUR to drive the short gravel road from the highway to the "resort". The worst road I've ever been on. I won't go into detail about how disgusting the pools are, but they're disgusting. Water slide, mud bath, saunas are a joke. Any...More

I am also a smoker. There was no smoking in the lodge or cabin, which is normal. We had a small porch. I would go on it and smoke either on the porch or in the road. I kept a pop can or bottle with water in it to put my butts so as to not litter and not cause a fire. In the dry season it would especially be easy to cause a fire. I do not remember an actual designated 'smoking allowed' area. As you may know, Costa Rica is working to have its residents not smoke -- part of their healthy life style. Personally I try to be respectful of them and still have my smoke. Hope this helps.

Hola! Yes, our location is on the north side of Rincon de la Vieja and the official entrance is on the south side of the volcano. So, if a self-guided walk into the park to visit the mudpots etc is your priority, then it will be more than a 1 hour drive away to reach. The unique features of the north side vs. the south side are, being in the rain forest, volcano crater views and the natural mineral hot springs. Besides all the amenities at the resort, are our adventure tours into the jungle, which include dips under grand waterfalls and walks to the blue river, horseback riding, water tubing and zip lining. Kids love the many pools, bullet slide, wildlife and adventure tours. Oh, & I forgot to mention Dino Park with 30 life-size animatronic dinosaurs inside the rain forest.
I hope that is helps you to make a decision.
