Villa Mara is brand new and has only been open for ~4 months as I write this, so while my rating is 4/5 now, I'm confident they could reach the level they're shooting for with a bit more time. I'd describe Villa Mara as a hybrid between a luxury hotel and a high end bed and breakfast, and if you look at it purely from a B&B standpoint I think you could argue it's 5/5 because many of the nits I'll raise are more hotel-like than B&B-like. Here's what we loved: (1) The staff were consistently superb. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, helpful, professional and went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay. Staff is hard to find these days and the people at Villa Mara were fantastic. (2) The room was super clean and smelled nice. If you open the windows you can hear the ocean! (We didn't have an ocean-view room as we were on the first floor, which we knew on booking, so no complaints at all there. I wasn't really expecting to be able to hear the ocean waves so that was a wonderful surprise.) Our room was equipped with a big TV and Apple TV, making it easy to watch a movie in the evening or catch up on a show on Netflix. (3) The bathroom was also impeccable and ours was equipped with a Toto heated toilet seat with bidet, and a modern soaker tub that filled really fast. Tip: if you stay here, you may need to fill the tub all the way up to get the full experience, pun somewhat intended. ;) (4) The breakfast provided has a number of delicious options - we tried two of the three quiches they offer, and both were excellent. Their pastries were fantastic as well - they had delicious almond croissants especially. (5) There's a beautiful walk along the coast just a block from Villa Mara that will take you to downtown Carmel in ~20 minutes or so. Almost all of that walk is a foot path rather than a sidewalk, and you can walk down to the beach as well. Here's some nits where I have to knock one star. Bear in mind this is in part due to the price point of Villa Mara which is comparable to many high end luxury hotels. At this price point the details matter more so I'm holding them to a higher standard here. This is still a really great place to stay and honestly I'm nitpicking here to provide a fair analysis of Villa Mara early after opening. I'm optimistic this place will continue to improve as it works out those starting-out kinks. (1) Room is underfurnished: Our beautiful room was equipped with three main pieces of furniture: the bed, an armchair, and a beautiful wood-clad mini-fridge+snack cabinet that was topped with some free snacks. Notably missing: any kind of desk or dresser. Do you have a laptop? You'll need to use it on your lap in bed or in that chair. Do you have a variety of devices that you'd like to lay out and charge? You can do that on the ample open floor area in front of the bed. Do you have clothes that you'd like to put into drawers? There's a *single* drawer in the closet and you can stick things in there. There are tiny shelves on each side of the bed which can also be used for charging your phone or placing a paperback book on, but aren't substantial enough. I'm mostly surprised because the room itself is not that small, but it feels really small because of how little is in it, which resulted in us having our luggage out and used as sort of additional surfaces. Suggestion for Villa Mara: You should have a chest of drawers and a desk in here, maybe a combo of both. (2) Room is under-equipped: Our first floor room had windows that looked out directly to seating areas where guests may be sitting, and also where people who come and go from the property will be walking. This was fine. The problem is that the window coverings are blackout blinds with no privacy option. You can either be pitch black with no natural light, or everyone can see into your room. Most hotels solve this by having a sheer privacy curtain in addition to the blackout drapes, so you can choose to have privacy + light, or complete darkness. The hotel seemed impressed with the motorized shades in the room - honestly I don't care as much about that as I do about being able to have light + privacy. Bear in mind most of the rooms in Villa Mara appear to be on the second floor, so this may be a problem unique to first floor units. (Also, the photograph of our first floor unit was actually from a second floor room staged with the same furniture, but not misleading enough to be a problem so I'm not knocking off any points for that - just don't expect a vaulted ceiling on the first floor, or drapes.) Our room had what was advertised as a private patio, but given how new the place is, the landscaping is not lush enough to afford any meaningful privacy. This is a small gravel area big enough for two chairs and a very low stone table about the same height as the seats of the chairs themselves. If you thought maybe *this* is a place you could use your laptop, nope again. (That said, there is common space in the lobby area including tables. I didn't actually need to use my computer on this trip so it wasn't a big deal, but I was a bit taken aback overall.) Also missing: any kind of spare blanket (we also asked at the front desk for this and they didn't have any (!) which meant that we had to crank up the heat in the room instead.) No coffee maker in the room (though you can ask for coffee in the lobby any time you want) and no hot water kettle either (same - can ask in lobby.) Given there's no flat surface in the room to actually put these things, I can see why they don't have them, but still, would have been a nice perk. Suggestion for Villa Mara: Consider improving privacy via privacy sheers, and definitely stock spare blankets for when it's cold. Plus one of the best things about the location is being able to hear the ocean - it would be super cozy to open the windows, hear the ocean breeze, and cuddle up under a blanket with a book...just sayin! The only other downside of Villa Mara is the location. It's in a residential neighborhood about a mile from town. You need to walk 20-25 minutes or ride a bike (free bikes are provided if you want) or drive 4 minutes to get to town. On the positive side it is located only a block from a beautiful beach and there's a great coastal walk (see pros up above.) We did find ourselves driving more than I think we would have, had we been staying within closer walking distance of downtown Carmel. There's no fixing this but I don't think this by itself would knock them down any if the other stuff was addressed. Anyways, overall I love the premise and the direction they're heading in, needs a little refinement to become the legendary Carmel property it seems destined to grow into.

The epitome of Carmel perfection by the Sea. Quaint and luxurious, with sweeping ocean views and dreamy vignettes beckoning for hours of rest and respite. Tuck into a nook by the indoor fires or sip local wines poured by the estate manager al fresco in the intimate collection of gardens. Fine linens, thoughtful decor, and the refreshing sights and sounds of the Pacific. A getaway to be treasured.

Absolutely wonderful 5-day stay with my wife for a half-work half-relaxation trip to Carmel. Perfect location steps away from the beach. Lovely staff, especially Jonathan and Robert. It is in a residential area, so it is a 5-minute drive or a 10-minute (uphill) bike ride to the restaurants and shops of downtown Carmel. They have free bikes, which is very handy. Tasty breakfast. Good sized rooms, with nice views and that special sea air. Many places to sit and relax on patios outside, or inside with fireplaces.

Villa Mara is an absolutely idyllic getaway spot on the northern California coast. You're steps from the beach, a 15 minute walk from downtown, and have every amenity you could need. It falls into the "hotel" category, but it feels much more like the small family resorts in Greece or Italy. My wife and I spent 3 nights there and had the most relaxing time where it felt like everything was taken care of for us. Highly recommend!!

We had an amazing stay during our time in Carmel. The hotel is adorable, impeccably styled, clean, and had the coziest environment. The staff were above and beyond any we’ve ever experienced during our frequent travels. Overly kind, helpful, and accommodating. Perfectly located steps away from the beach. We were extremely impressed, had an amazing time here and cannot wait to visit again!! By far the best option when planning a trip to Carmel!

Wow… we couldn’t have had a better experience from start to finish! We were a group of 8 ladies traveling for our annual YPO retreat. From our initial inquiry… to booking rooms… to checking in (we were running late from the airport to catch a restaurant reservation and George met our Uber at the curb to grab our bags so we could continue to the restaurant)… the delicious breakfasts that were included… the beds / rooms / property (everything beautiful, comfortable and new)… location (across from the ocean and 15 minute walk to downtown)… the AMAZING service from ALL their staff… I really can’t think of one negative (or even average) thing to comment on! This stay 100% exceeded all of our expectations (and for a group that sets a high bar), and I can’t wait to come back!

Villa Mara, Carmel is the hotel that Carmel has been yearning for. They embody a classic elegance while maintaining up to date furnishings and appliances, making the experience feel so fun and clean. The staff is unparalleled; I never felt like just another guest on the property. I felt a genuine interaction and real sense of kindness from each member on their team. We spent our days enjoying the included and delicious breakfast spread in the morning, riding the complimentary bikes around town, or down at the beach, just a short walk from the hotel. After a nice evening we would share a bottle of wine offered complimentary around one of the several fire pits on the property. I couldn't have been more satisfied with our stay. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking in the area.

We were fortunate enough to find Villa Mara on our coastal trip. We arrived in Carmel without a hotel booked and called Villa Mara to see if there was availability. George answered and kindly described the available rooms. He graciously showed me both rooms with no pressure to decide. We were offered wine during the check-in process and then were shown to our room by Robert, who described the features including the heated bathroom floor, outdoor patio and well stocked complimentary mini-bar. And, we now understand the appeal of a bidet, especially the heated seat! The hotel is beautifully decorated with multiple fireplaces and outdoor fire pits for relaxing and socializing. The owner, Dev, shared his experience purchasing and renovating the hotel and his passion for creating a truly special atmosphere is evident. The hotel is located on a quiet street close to town and within walking distance of the beach. We enjoyed morning walks and returning to the hotel for breakfast which included fresh pastries, fruit and quiche. The staff are all extremely friendly, attentive and truly seem to care that the guests have an exceptional experience. Highly recommend staying here.

We stayed at Villa Mara for two nights before moving on to another planned trip in the area. We wished we were still at Villa Mara the entire time after we checked in at our next destination. The entire property at Villa Mara was so beautiful and clean. The staff were overly generous and accommodating, the rooms were pristine and very well designed, the breakfast was fabulous, the cocktails throughout the day were a treat, we could go on and on. We would definitely return and recommend it to friends and family. Nothing else in the area compares to it. It’s a very new hotel, so I’ll be interested to see how it evolves and grows over the next year. Can’t wait to visit again!
