Let me start off by saying we love this place. We have stayed here a few times, but have visited many times over the years. The common area renovations look great, and add a great feel to the facility. In addition, we found the service to be top-notch. However, historic and timeless should NEVER be an excuse for dirty, poorly maintained rooms. Our recent stay was very disappointing. Even though we were in a one-bedroom suite, the bedroom did not have a window. There were two small windows in the living room, but natural light was at a premium. While I understand the "due to the unique nature of the hotel no two rooms are alike" verbiage, this was stretching things. However, there is absolutely no excuse for stained and damaged furniture, dirty and stained carpet and numerous areas where paint is peeling off the ceiling. In addition, there was water damage in the bathroom. If they don't start taking care of the rooms like they take care of the lobby, the hotel's days are numbered.

Hotel's Favourite
Rising up over the Coronado skyline there are two iconic landmarks; the Coronado bridge, which is a marvel of engineering, and Hotel del Coronado. Cooling off on a hot, sunny day, we enjoyed very reasonably priced ($11) beers on the expansive veranda. Great vantage point for people-watching and occasional fly-overs from the naval bases.

From a design/historical perspective, the building is truly wonderful and worth a visit. But you could do this and get a drink/dinner without committing hundreds/thousands to a sub-par hotel experience. I found the grounds confusing with a lack of helpful signage. The hotel seemed under-staffed all around. The front desk did not notify me of a time-sensitive FedEx delivery (hence, somewhere in the Del offices a perishable Thanksgiving treat will now sit to rot). A small detail, but the bathroom lights are on an unforgiving motion-sensor—problematic when the toilet is partitioned from the rest of the bathroom! When you take a moment too long on the toilet (taking an S-H-word, as I found myself doing late at night) you will suddenly find yourself in pitch blackness, inebriated and bottomless, stumbling over the unmentionables that hug your sunburned ankles. Perhaps not the hotel’s fault, but the clientele was 100% white (lending to the uneasy feeling of stepping out of the real world and into a bizarro Hallmark movie). Creepy! Not to mention the many hordes of unaccompanied teenagers climbing over each other (literally everywhere, including at/around the bars and in our shared patio (at The Cabanas). They were so loud they we could not sit outside to enjoy our ‘private’ fire pit. For some reason we were given an adjoining room to the teens which was also problematic b/c they were so loud and the adjoining doors offered little isolation. It also makes me grumpy that WE were given the adjoining room as opposed to their parents. Isolated incident or not, I think it speaks to the way things seemed to be overlooked at ‘the Del’. All of these things combined created more stress and anxiety than I walked in with; it was not a relaxing stay.

This is the best hotel I have been to ever. I read a few bad reviews and was nervous and boy was I wrong. The restaurants were great. The bars amazing. The beach spectacular. The room I stayed at was a revonated one. So super nice it was an amazing room.

This was a large family stay (5 rooms total). We reserved 2 rooms, one for our kids one for ourselves. We booked them in August. We had to fight and argue with more than 3 people/ managers at check in to receive the room we reserved. They were rude and argumentative. Who knew a reservation at the del is meaningless? All other departments outside of registration met expectations, however at this price point you expect no less than baseline service across the board. If it was one person at check in, it could be chalked up to an isolated incident, but to have to work so hard with so many different people at check in indicates the standard in this department is poor. There are many choices of nice places to stay and we will go elsewhere in the future.

Dear braindaham, I’m disappointed to learn about your recent stay with us. This should have been an incredible family getaway filled with joyous memories, and I’m so sorry that wasn’t your experience. We pride ourselves on offering exceptional hospitality, and I apologize for the insincere service you received upon arrival. We greatly appreciate every traveler who walks through our doors, and I regret that we didn’t make that sentiment clear. I appreciate your candid feedback and I will be addressing matters with my team. One day, I hope you find it in your heart to return so we can provide the proper Del experience you deserve. Sincerely, Harold Rapoza Jr. General Manager
