Honeymoon Suite decor 10. Flood lights outside the room made it tough to sleep. The front desk was very courteous. It had a great patio but the cushions were wet since it had rained the day before. I don’t want to knock it because it might’ve been better if I’d had my sleeping mask. It was certainly cute.

Merrit house is a great hotel. Staff is very friendly and the rooms are really nice for the money. Location is great for walking and is located right behind the Marriott. Will definitely stay here again

The rooms are all decorated with a theme. Mine was a sort of Safari look. The other room had a "travel" theme. Sure, most of the decorations might have been purchased at Home Goods, but it was fun. The rooms were clean. The location is great. Parking was not an issue as some people have written (but the spaces are tight if you have a larger car). The breakfast area, as some have said, is small, but it does what it needs to do. It is not the Ritz or the Mandarin, but it is comfortable, convenient, clean and cost-friendly.

The hotel is a 5-10 min walk to the Pier and a further 20 mins to Cannery Row. We had a decent size room but I'd say we were lucky with the location. It was right in the middle of the first floor so the balcony had a view down the driveway and out to the street. Rooms on the lower floor and others on the first floor have views facing other rooms. Breakfast was fine though there's not much space to sit. Overall, a good place to explore the area for a couple of days.

We checked into a suite in the historic Adobe house. The furniture and decor were cute; however, the smell of mold was so strong it was difficult to breathe. We tried to switch rooms, but none were available. Leslie at the front desk was very friendly and apologetic. She agreed the room smell was very bad. We asked for a refund so we could switch hotels because the room was not habitable given the overpowering stench of MOLD. We explained it was just impossible for us to stay in the room as we were both having a terrible reaction to the smell: coughing and headache. Jason the owner became verbally abusive and refused the refund. it was clear this was not the first time this happened that someone refused to stay in this room. We wished Jason a nice evening and left the establishment. DO NOT STAY HERE.

We had one more night in the area and chose to stay where we could walk to everything. Merritt House is in the perfect location near other pricier hotels. The room was huge, well appointed with a wood burning fireplace (one log provided), and a charming patio in the courtyard. I don't know how I missed this gem in prior trips to the area but would certainly stay here again.

While staying on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula this location is perfect for all points of interest. At the edge of historical downtown Monterey you can stroll the streets of Alvarado, Calle Principal and Larkin; shop at boutiques, wander over to the wharf or Estero Park or get in a work out or play tennis at Monterey Athletic & Tennis Center. Dining can be either casual or upscale. Post Office is also walking distance for mailing those old fashioned post cards. Only thing I didn’t like was my room location. I was looking forward to the Merritt House’s entrance and garden rooms. Unfortunately those are in the front and I was in the back over the parking structure with a view of the Marriott which is the old Hotel San Carlos. It was disappointing nevertheless did not distract from the quality of my stay. There were a few minor issues with my room; heat did not work, nothing to ignite the courtesy fire log, sink would not drain and no coffee cups. I notified staff and all was resolved by relocating me to an other room which was still in the same building just a few doors down - but the difference in the decor was more suited to my liking. The other was like a manly hunters lodge and the new one more like Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

I would have given the hotel five stars but it could stand a bit of updating. The rooms were small but very comfortable and attention was given to make it a very pleasant stay. The breakfast was plentiful and good (continental). The location was prefect and quiet. I can't say enough about how fantastic the staff is.

Lovely room belies the start exterior...get there early to park as spaces are less than rooms and some people park wonky! Staff was really great. Breakfast was decent although the breakfast room is small and if it is drizzling outside you may have to take a to go sak back to your room. There is outdoor seating if it is nice; mornings are fairly iffy along the coast. Although we were upstairs away from street noise, the incredibly loud seagulls roosted on our ceiling daily. They reminded us we were on the ocean. Close to free trolley stops, walking distance to restaurants and Fisherman's pier. I'd recommend this place.

I am staying here now and suggest to whoever does the star rating it I is time to take another look. This hotel is far beyond what I feel is a 2 star hotel. I am staying in one of the remodeled kings and couldn’t be happier. Room is large and nicely decorated, bathroom is big and clean and the room even comes with a fireplace. What more could you ask? Because it has no gym or other amenities I would consider this 3.5 stars. The staff was quite helpful and friendly during check in. The location can’t be beat. Two blocks and you are downtown with shops and restaurants. Don’t let the 2 star rating put you off. They are obviously fixing this place up.
