Try this place! Friendly staff, it's clean and there's anything your may expect from a HI and more. Nice homey atmosphere. Carmel and Pebble Beach are simple yet nice single & double rooms. Nice breakfast, oatmeal tea and coffee. Nice dining room.
I stayed at HI Monterey in November '14 for one night to start a small road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway. I do not have any negative things to say, although the basement rooms were kind of dark.

I stayed here just for one night (definitely would have loved to stay longer!) mainly due to the price and location. I was originally going to camp at the Veterans Memorial Park...but that was $30 a night, plus $10 to park the next day in...More
As you can tell I like this place. The staff were helpful and chirpy upon arrival, explained how everything worked and got us checked in within minutes. They even recommended decent restaurants in the area and gave us a map to find it. Perfect if...More
Some of the most comfortable hostel beds I've slept on! Staff are extremely friendly, there are large open common areas which gives a very relaxing vibe. Short walk from Cannery Row and the Aquarium makes it very convenient, and great value!

I don't know if the private 4-bed rooms have their own facilties, but the "shared bathroom" has a slight nuance at this hostel- the M/F toilets are separate, and the showers (3 or 4) are unisex, and each shower stall is its own room. So, there is shower stall A, B, C (maybe D), and a guest (M or F) can use any of the available shower stalls. Basically, none of the showers are designated for either M or F
Hope that helps
