We have stayed at this property several times over a number of years. It is consistently reliable, and in a good location, close to downtown. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and quiet. I have stayed at several other properties in Monterey & Pacific grove but Casa Munras is my "go-to" location when visiting Monterey, as long as I can find a competitive price. The only (minor) thing that bugs me is that parking is not included in the quoted rate, so that has to be considered when comparing with similar neighboring hotels.
We recently stayed here just one night and were sad to leave. The hotel is set in pretty grounds, not far from the local shops, bars and restaurants. On arrival the staff were super friendly and helpful and recommended somewhere for a quick breakfast the next day on our way to an early whale watching trip. The pool area was well maintained and was not too busy. We were able to park outside our room and the room itself was clean and comfortable. Monterey itself is worth a visit and we were sad to stay only one night. We didn’t eat at the restaurant but it looked good. We did try the bar and sat by the fire in the lobby with drinks. All in all a really nice stay on our way to Santa Barbara. Would recommend!
We’ve stayed at Casa Munras many times, going back to 1990. We live in Santa Cruz county so we usually plan a visit within two weeks of staying here. Sometimes we just need a change of scenery or we’ll stay the night to start a vacation early to Santa Barbara or Cambria or Pismo Beach. Service is excellent from the front desk. They always do their best to give us one of our favorite rooms. Old Monterey is right outside the door including the best dining in Monterey. The nearby Trader Joe’s is handy as well. We stay a few times a year. The well appointed rooms, location and comfy beds keep bringing us back. The only thing they could use is a microwave for leftovers. Everything else is perfect. We’ll be back!
Very nice hotel. The room was spacious and clean. Cozy and nicely decorated lobby. Lovely grounds and plenty of parking. It's an easy walk to downtown Monterey. I didn't eat on property or take advantage of the spa, so I can't speak to either.
Hotel was at about 30% capacity so it was fairly quiet! They allowed us to check out late as a result which was nice and we kept our car in the lot for the afternoon since we had paid for parking. Although you could always drop your things off at your room and park overnight on the street. Dog friendly, linoleum floors were good, room a bit crowded with desk, tv center, queen bed, and chair with ottoman. Bathroom and closet were spacious so it helped with storing our things. Fitness room was descent enough and room was comfortable. The morning was a bit loud with cleaners but overall was a great stay!
Casa Munras is a very well maintained, classic motor inn from (I'm going to guess) the 1960s. For the second time we ate dinner at the Spanish restaurant in the main building. Tasty tapas menu though worth noting that it is noticeably overpriced, and I am comparing to my hometown prices in San Francisco. My wife and I stayed in a second floor room in the center of the large complex, so we were well insulated from any noise from the surrounding neighborhood. The bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed the ensuite fireplace. In the morning, I fetched a coffee and sat on the balcony in the warm sun. Delightful. Casa Munras wasn't our first choice in Monterey, but as it was Thanksgiving week, there weren't many other options available. In the end, we were mostly pleasantly surprised. The one downside has become a real pet peeve of mine. Though they call it a "hotel and spa", Casa Munras is really a classy motel, designed originally with plenty of parking so that guests could pull up right to the door of their rooms. The very layout of the place is designed around the automobile. So, after paying in advance for two rooms (our daughter and her boyfriend were traveling with us), I was hit with a daily parking fee of $17. Not a huge charge by itself these day (compared to the room at $190 and the dinner for four at $300), but to my mind an act of disrespect by management toward guests. If you are in Manhattan for example, where onsite parking is rare and few travelers arrive by rental car, I understand a parking fee. However, for a motor inn with at least one parking space for every room, it is pushy to charge to park. It comes across as tacky and greedy. What's next: a laundry charge if we decide to use a towel when we shower? I know this may seem like a petty complaint, but I see the proliferation of these BS charges and it makes me unhappy. If they need ways to increase revenue, why can't hotel managers just raise their room rates and include parking? But that will make the room rates less competitive in comparison to other lodging choices. So instead, they seem to prefer to nickel and dime guests like me and leave us feeling less than completely satisfied about our stay. …
I've stayed here a few times for my work trips, and I really thought the location was convenient to access the freeways to commute to my work locations, the restaurant on property (Esteban's) was excellent, and parking was easy and straight forward. The room was accurate as listed, my friend who was in the area joined me on the last trip, and we had a lovely time at Esteban's (empanadas and chocolate chip cookies with valhrona chocolate were to die for) and a cozy 2 night stay. We mostly spent our time out working or eating at restaurants nearby in Monterey/Carmel Valley. The amenities (ie in bathrooms) were basic, but we didn't need anything extra! I recommend it for a safe, clean and cozy place to sleep, easy parking/check-in and out, and overall good value!
This is a motel. Pure and simple a motel. 3 night stay. Room was not serviced at all. No shower gel/body wash just a very hard small bar of soap. TV didn’t work Didn’t bother with restaurant as previous reviews were not good. Check in staff pleasant. Let down by basic rooms without housekeeping. Would not return
We were very sad this trip. We had stayed at Casa Munras on three different occasions pre-COVID and enjoyed our stays very much. Also, we really loved the restaurant, Esteban, especially the varieties of paella. To our dismay, when we tried to book this trip, we found the prices had skyrocketed post-COVID. We booked lodging elsewhere due to the price hike, but were eager to enjoy paella, as we have before. We walked into the empty restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and were told they couldn’t /wouldn’t seat us for another half hour to an hour. OK, well, we’d be happy to wait, sit down, have a drink by the fire pit and enjoy the ambiance. “Well, there’s no bar tender, so you can’t have a drink.” What?? We can’t have a drink? We can’t sit by the fire pit? We aren’t welcome to be here, even though we have stayed here three times before??? You lost us right then and there. I hope the kitty, Esteban, has deserted the field, as well!…
A lovely hotel in the heart of old Monterey. Close to shopping, restaurants, 8/10 mile to walk to fisherman's wharf. Room was comfy, beds were very comfortable, well supplied with all amenities. Very quiet. The hotel was set up as a motel with separate buildings. But, no elevator to second floor. Dinner on site but no breakfast was included and not available at the time. They have a happy hour (at least on Thursday when we arrived). Gracious front desk staff.
