Like many recent reviews we too stayed at this modern out of town hotel for 2 nights as part of a Riviera tour of Puglia.

It's a very modern stylish hotel but we felt that there was more style than substance.

Our room was ok although a bit pokey with no balcony and only a side window overlooking a flat roof. Signage at the hotel was very confusing and trying to get to the pool area meant going back into the hotel to get back out again.

The real let down however was when we came to dine.

We had one evening meal and that was average at best. It was pretty paltry and they brought the salad as an after thought after the main meal had near enough been eaten.

Breakfast was also poor. They had two hot drink machines but one was out of order so there was always a big queue to use the remaining one. The second day was even worse as there was a seminar at the hotel and so the breakfast area was even busier next morning, made worse by the fact that as a tour group we had to be out early so there was little time to hang around waiting for a hot drink and waiting for the buffet to be restocked.

Would not use the hotel out of choice given its location and coldness.

The UNAHOTELS MH Matera hotel in Matera, Italy was a stop on our tour but sadly, for only one night. It was the most high end place that we stayed in. It boasts a spa and swimming pool, 132 rooms and is near the Sassi, a Unesco World Heritage site. It is a large place and the room that I received was very large, with wood floors with adequate lighting. A large double bed was provided which was comfortable and not too soft. Coffee and tea service,[a nice selection] laundry service, a safe and a real plus-extra pillows and blankets were all provided. A nice desk and very comfortable desk chair are provided as well. The bathroom was large with adequate towels provided. A problem with the tub/shower is that it is small and there are no decals or a rubber mat provided to prevent slipping or falling,. There is a very small grab bar [see picture] but this is really inadequate but at least it is something. The water pressure, however, is good. The minibar is not stocked but if you want it to be, it can be for an additional 12 euros a day [I think in addition to the cost of what you consume] If not, vending machines are available on floors 1, 3, and 4. WiFI+ The breakfast was comprehensive and there were adequate selections. It was a very comfortable stay and I would recommend and return.

I chose this property after the 4hotel episode in which it was the winner... it was a pleasant surprise to find the owner, years later, attentive and present every day just as if she were still in the competition. Strategic location, modern and clean rooms, equally beautiful restaurant rooms (both internal and external) and with an excellent Ă  la carte menu. What if I find some flaw? The breakfast room, perhaps given the month of August, was the large one, not the one in the restaurant seen in the episode. Although the offer was varied and valid, it certainly had a more commercial and less sophisticated aspect. Used as a family hotel, the structure is also perhaps more suitable for couples or business trips... small details are missing such as a reserved table for families where you can already find a high chair, perhaps a placemat and some colors for the children, or the welcome of attentive staff ready for the mother's requests. Even though they are polite, they certainly don't pay attention to the priorities of the little ones, including the absence of even a small playground within a structure with such large spaces, or the choice to provide uncomfortable camping beds that squeak instead of the cot. a bit with the minimalist furniture of the 4 star rooms.
Finally, a piece of advice...the rates are really excellent, I dare say low...perhaps it would be better to increase even a little per day per person and include spa access while perhaps also keeping the opening hours limited to hours to guarantee a quiet environment, but still opt for free access. It's a real shame to see it perpetually half-empty, especially when the weather outside isn't the best and you might like to use the internal relaxation areas.
Small notes for a satisfactory holiday in a beautiful structure, congratulations once again to its very young owner

I had already been to this facility, I found it to be worse.
Starting from the interminable waits for the broken elevator, only 1 of the 2 was working and with the hotel full... I won't tell you. We enter the cold, icy room, we try to turn on the air but nothing, calling the reception, they turn it on remotely, it starts, too bad that after 10 minutes we had to go down to the Spa and, removing the card, it turned off... returning from the Spa imagine what a pleasure the cold room was... let's go ahead, let's go get the kit for the Spa, we are given a dirty towel (I attach photo) it could happen, for goodness sake, we take it back and, almost as if I had to I apologize "you can put it inside the bathroom, there is a white container, then I'll give you another one" are we serious? Is this a 4 star or have I missed it? let's continue... the Spa, what should be an area of relaxation and silence, is a meeting place for groups, revelry, shouting and shouting. A surreal situation, the worst thing is that NO ONE intervened to put some order, reprimand and enforce silence. More than a relaxation area, an amusement park. Disappointed.

This is what I wrote 4 years ago...

We stayed in this beautiful hotel for 4 nights, myself, my wife and our two girls and we had a truly wonderful time.
In one of the rooms we had a problem with the air conditioning, which was immediately resolved as soon as we reported it to the reception and one with the mini bar, which was replaced with a new one.
This was already the initial calling card of the availability that was expected and so it was!
Staff always attentive and ready to satisfy every customer request, clean rooms always stocked with courtesy services, wonderful large swimming pool with bar and food service at all hours, relaxation pool with sun loungers suspended over the water to enjoy the surrounding greenery, pine forest green with waterfall and sunbeds in every corner, for resting or reading, well-kept spa with wonderful swimming pool... in short, everything is beautiful and for every taste.
Very close to the Sassi of Matera, where we easily went several evenings, plentiful and quality breakfast, excellent restaurant for the quality of the products.
We really had a great time and enjoyed this stay in total relaxation and I would like to underline, above all without stress despite having our little dog with us, who we always kept in our company, without ever leaving him to cry alone in the room.
My compliments for everything, but especially for this last detail, which may seem small, but it is a lot for those like us, the dog is a member of the family with whom we can experience moments of relaxation without stress and unnecessary restrictions.
Thanks for welcoming us.

How does a hotel that I know has won Barbieri's 4 hotel program deserve a mediocre rating? Maybe in that program it will have made a one-off, ad hoc demonstration.
Let me explain. The modern hotel, which is positioned like an oasis in the desert 7 km from Matera, has 3 beautiful positive aspects: the beautiful internal structure, the park with swimming pools and a very nice and organized wellness centre. The breakfast is varied and made of good products.
But a 4 star must provide 4 star hotel services, and here the thing is very interpreted "Nothing in the mini bar in the room because there is a dispenser on the corridor" you can't hear it. It's not the same thing!.. Only 1 entry into the outdoor pool for each night of stay, you can't hear it (complete with a bracelet on your wrist!); Entry into the wellness center for an extra 25 euros per person seems expensive. A pool towel to rent to those who are already guests of the hotel for 3 euros is completely out of the question. Here, entry to outsiders is favored rather than to guests (the opposite of what it should be!).. Lift not working on 2 floors to go down to the pool area and lack of ventilation in the bathroom without windows,.. No shuttle service even for a fee, which takes you to Matera... A single automatic coffee machine in the breakfast room for a large number of seats is not good (and it is not good for someone to have to go to the counter to have a real coffee either (a 4 star hotel must provide table service). The undersigned does not want to replace Barbieri, but as a modest frequenter of good class hotels, he has never seen certain things, except here.
My intellectual honesty requires me to put what was said in the introduction on the scales, but my subjective perception would have given it one point less.

My family was on a Gate One tour , and this was our Matera hotel , when we got there for the evening all rooms in the hotel were given out, the last five rooms which were my family and others on our tour were given 5 rooms in the back of the hotel in a renovated garage or barn , it was full of mold and you can smell it as you came into building , of course we complained to our tour guide from Gate One and she told us she found out when we did that they did this . We booked this tour a year before ! This hotel was far from the town and they said they were fully booked and couldn’t find any other accommodations ,my husband had COPD and others had asthma , they had no air purifiers for the rooms . We were at their mercy ! In order for us to get to the main hotel we had to call for a shuttle which was an SUV that did not fit us all , or walk up a hill included in the walk , so for a short stay we could not use any of the amenities! We stayed under protest and was only offered a drink , which we don’t drink ! I’m still so upset by it , to be treated that way , I will not stay in another UNA hotel ! I’ve been back more than a week and no one from UNA nor Gate One has contacted us !

Bad experience!!
To begin with, I agree with quite a few opinions that I have seen, getting a smile from the staff is complicated! The pool staff is as friendly as a prison door, the pool "security guard" thinks he's a nightclub security guard and stares at you constantly (Mr, you're a beachgoer, you have to relax!), the staff at the small restaurant lunch ; not a hello, not a smile, doesn't care about you at all, for a 4 star it's shameful!
The air conditioning in the room makes the noise of a lawnmower running, impossible to leave it on at night, noise level the soundproofing is a disaster, you hear the neighbor snoring and people walking in the corridor! The wi fi let's not talk about it, it's a waste of time from the room... speaking of the room not even a small bottle of water in the fridge at your disposal we are in a 4 star!!??
Access to the swimming pool with OBLIGATION to wear a SWIMMING CAP (4 stars!?)… and you have to guess, at no time via the reservation sites is it stipulated that it is obligatory… so you are provided with a swimming cap for a child who has a good grip on you, it's like you're at the municipal swimming pool!
To top it off, we fell during the construction period (unlucky), so painting at the swimming pool, breakfast against a backdrop of performance, it was a treat…
Move on, we travel a lot, it's by far a small 3 star and nothing more, you have a new hotel in the same location and there a real 4 star not very far away, don't hesitate!

The first thing to say is that if you are looking for a room in Matera, this hotel is about 7km away, although there is a bus stop right outside, and the adjacent village looked quite shabby as we drove by. We were allocated room 227 for our two-night stay, which was at the rear and had very good views across the surrounding countryside. The room itself and corridors leading to the rooms are decorated in what I would describe as a modernist style. Our biggest concern about the room is that there were no drawers to put any clothes in, just a hanging rail, so we had to leave most items in our cases. The bathroom had a shower over bath rather than a separate shower cubicle but was very clean and roomy, although the towels weren't as thick as in other hotels. Because the weather was poor, we didn't have a chance to explore the outdoor facilities but the indoor public areas are attractively designed and presented to a high standard - the best feature of the hotel, in our opinion. The main restaurant is large and spacious and there is plenty of choice. Pumpkin soup with almonds was an excellent starter to our evening meal and the podolica beef I chose for main must have been slow cooked because it was so tender it fell apart when I cut it.

This hotel was a great find, and I wish we had stayed longer. Beautiful, comfortable, and great service!

We immediately felt a welcoming warmth from Maria at the front desk, who kindly allowed us to check in early and directed us to our very comfortable room. After settling in, and as we arrived just right after lunch, we hurriedly went to the restaurant hoping they would still serve us even though it was just minutes past their closing time. As we arrived, we were immediately welcomed by a gentleman who, after telling us the restaurant was closed, was also quick to motion us to a table and told us they'd be happy to still serve us although the menu would be limited. We were so grateful as we did not look forward to getting back on the road to find somewhere to eat. He was very kind and, in true Italian style, told us to enjoy our meal and to take our time...The service was great and we didn't feel rushed at all.

The MH Matera Hotel is located a few kilometers away from the center of town, the very touristy area of the Sassi. We were happy to not have to deal with the traffic and parking issues in such a busy area, and to have a safe & well-lit parking lot for our car.

We did drive into the city (and straight to a paid parking lot), to enjoy the city views that night. The next morning we had our delicious breakfast buffet, served entirely by the staff to avoid any contact with the food and others. The grounds were delightful and the heated swimming pool was a welcomed relief for our sore muscles. Everyone had to wear a swimming cap to get into the pool, which I appreciated as it makes it easier to keep it clean.

The check-out process was quick and easy and, just as when we arrived, the staff was delightful. Thank you Maria and Maurizio for your kindness and beautiful smiles.

We will see you again!
