I will start with the positives, because it would not be fair to pretend there weren't some enjoyable things about our stay: 1) The staff--friendly, helpful, positive, available. The highlight of our stay. 2) The view from our room--unbeatable. 3) Breakfast--tasty (although we did not come down to breakfast both days as we found the environment a bit awkward, with silence in a large room). The reasons we will not be returning are the following: 1) The furniture in the room was antique, yes, but also down-at-the-heels, rickety, and uncomfortable. The wardrobe was not secured to the wall and tilted dangerously toward us whenever we operated the doors. The settee had a large depression in the middle and felt like it was going to break whenever we sat down (and we are not large people). The mattress did not fit the bed frame, leaving large gaps on all sides and allowing the pillows to fall down behind the mattress at the head of the bed. And the mattress itself was very firm, leading to a very poor night's sleep both nights of our stay. The lamp in the corner of the room by the window was literally falling apart (that is, the fringe would fall to the carpet and disintegrate into dust). 2) Little air circulation. The small window facing the ocean was the only real source of air in the bedroom, as the double-hung window by the bed is broken and will not stay up. It has clearly been broken for some time. The other windows in the room were non-operable. The bathroom doors let some air in, but not enough to circulate through the main sleeping area. This led to a stifling atmosphere day and night despite the provision of a small desk fan. 3) Only one outlet in the entire room was working and available for us to use--the one directly below the windows on the ocean wall. None of the outlets in the bathroom worked, and all other outlets in the room were either non-functional or were already in use (such as for the refrigerator). 4) Parking in the lot was a risky proposition, as the angle of the entrance led to scraping our sedan's undercarriage no matter what angle we tried. We ended up parking on the street after our first 3 attempts. 5) Cleaning in some of the common areas seems to have been neglected for a while. The thick dust gathering in the hallway to the courtyard was particularly noticeable. The overall impression we had during our stay was of an Inn that had been lovely at one time but has been missing some basic maintenance for a while and sorely needs updating. I'm sorry I couldn't give the Martine Inn more happy feedback, and we wish you well in your pursuit of a pleasurable experience for your guests. …
We had a great 2-night stay while visiting the Monterey area. Perfect location and service, staff are very friendly and professional. Our room was full of character and furnished with lovely antiques. Breakfast was delicious and different options were offered each morning. On top of it, it was served in a dining room facing the ocean - beautiful setting to start the day! Definitely recommended.
The power went out in the Monterey Peninsula on New Year’s Eve. We left a different hotel because they had nothing to offer under the circumstances. We were met at the door of the Martine by Carmen. She showed us to our room, provided lanterns and candles, offered extra blankets, and extended the time for wine and hors d’oeuvres so we would not be rushed. The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast of eggs Florentine, sausage, and fresh fruit while soaking in the glorious ocean view. The staff is friendly and professional. The rooms are lovely and furnished with beautiful antiques. We’ll be back!
We booked the Victorian Room which is listed as great for lovers. Found out why…no guest room borders it, wall, ceiling or floor. Truly fantastic views of the ocean and sounds of the surf. You will not miss a television, as the ocean is mesmerizing. People come from around the world to experience the oceanfront walk. At The Martine Inn, all you have to is stroll across the street after your included breakfast in the dining room which directly overlooks the ocean on Oceanside Avenue. Mr. Don Martine personally crafted a unique hospitality experience at his exceptional inn through years of hands-on labor. The staff are also exceptional in their attentiveness and warmth. They went above and beyond to accommodate a special request. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I discovered it many years ago from a friend who said her anniversary trip was complete with staying here and walking the coastal path…as was my most recent anniversary trip. SUPER ROMANTIC. Cannot wait to return.…
If you are looking for a great place to relax, this is it. Choose from ocean view rooms, courtyard rooms or plain room for the budget conscious. Either way you are right across the street from the ocean.
Just spent 3 nights at the Martine Inn it was absolutly fantastic, we booked the Parke room which has wonderful views on 3 sides of the waves crashing against the rocks. I know some people have commented of the decor but this is all part of the charm, its cozy and really quaint. The beds were spotless and comfy and each morning the chef prepared a freshly cooked breakfast which was excellent. The staff were helpful and any requests were actioned, they even had cheese and wine included at 5pm each evening. The position of the Inn was perfect with a short walk to the Aquarium and restaurants, we had a car and explored the area, including Carmel and Monterey, they have a 17 mile drive at Pebble Beach which you don't want to miss Thank you Martine Inn for a wonderful holiday
This was a charming bed and breakfast with water views. Staff was super and friendly with every encounter. Yummy breakfast served on a silver platter. I felt fancy. Great views of ocean life seen from the bed and breakfast. Seen whales, seals and sea otters. Room was small but charming. Great walkable town
We enjoyed our time spent at the Martine Inn. It was an interesting and relaxing base from which to explore the Pacific Grove area of California. Each guestroom was unique, and we were more than happy with 'the cottage' which had windows on three sides, always a bonus, and situated above a garage containing vintage cars, and with views of the Pacific, and of courtyards. The only minor downside was a slight stale odour in the bathroom which also contained one or two items which were not in pristine condition. But the overall charm of the place more than made up for this. Breakfast at the Martine is quite an experience. Your order arrives on an enormous, and very heavy silver tray. It is a bit of showmanship, but quite a rewarding experience, especially as the food itself is so very well cooked and delicious. The chef really does provide an exquisite, high-end meal which is also presented in a visually interesting way. It was nice afterwards to take breakfast coffee out into the main courtyard, which is a pleasant and peaceful haven, with running water from a fountain. Off road parking at the front of the hotel was complimentary.…
Brilliant location and service, but best times have obviously been 20 years ago. The buliding needs deep cleaning, refurbishment and repairs. I feelo sorry for the very polite and helpful people in the service area.
I really wanted to like the Martine Inn but at $329/night…it just wasn’t worth the money. It’s a grand old building but we found it a bit worn and thread bear. We spent two nights in the Carriage Room in July 2022. Here are our observations: * The room had a musty smell indicative of the need for a good spring cleaning. It wasn’t that is was dirty, but the carpet and drapes needed cleaning (dusty and stained). * The room was filled with lovely antiques but there was too much furniture, making it difficult to maneuver. For example, there was a fire place which we never would have lit since the chairs in front were way too close. It was a total fire hazard. Since the room was so small, there was no place to move them to. * The King bed had a beautiful antique headboard and footboard. Since it was a headboard was a double (they didn’t have large beds back in the day), the headboard was secured to the wall. We didn’t have an issue with that…it was the way it was secured…with an eyebolt and wire. Come on folks…You can do better than that. * The toilet bowl was loose and creaked terribly when you sat on it. * The room door was glass (very pretty) but there was a light directly outside that was turned on at night. Don’t misunderstand…I get the need for the light but it lit up the inside of the room like it was daylight, making it difficult to sleep. * The breakfast was mediocre at best. We ordered the crepes which were rubbery, lukewarm, and looked like canned fruit. * The appetizers for the wine/cocktail hour sat on the table for hours prior to the event. The simply looked old. We didn’t touch them. * The grounds and plants looked tired. I’d be embarrassed if my yard looked like that. The external grounds above the car parking area and around the walkway needed weeding. Definitely not four stars. On the positive side, the inn is in a wonderful location and close to everything. I just wish “elegance” still described it.…
