I stayed here a number of times and with the unique location was able to ride my bicycle along to ocean rides enjoying breathtaking views. The rooms are nice, the restaurant is close by and the food is pretty darn good.
The woman at the front desk was very friendly, but the motel is in terrible shape. The first room they put us in had no heat so we asked to change rooms. The second room they gave us did have heat. The next morning I tried to take a shower and there was no hot water. I called and the staff on duty asked if I wanted to take a shower in another room! I said no. She then said she had stayed in the room next to ours and would run her hot water which might make ours get hot. She did that and somehow that worked. We would never stay there again.
We have stayed at the Beachcomber many times over the past 20 years but not recently. Unfortunately it appears to be under new ownership. It was always a very old motel but was clean and had great breakfast offerings. It now is very poorly run with no regard to customer experience. We visited on the shoulder season but the office is locked most of the time and you have to track down a maintenance man to check in. There was a mixup on our room request that became critical as they expected three guests and only had three clean room and 23 not made up. They always asked in the morning if we wanted our room cleaned (something I had never heard before). It was cleaned but not until after 4 pm. When made up the room was clean but had ants and spiders in the bathroom. The breakfast is now just average. We had paid in advance for three nights and the last two nights we were the only guests there, so I assume the word has gotten out about the place. There are several other highly rated motels within a few blocks that we drove by and saw many cars in the parking lot. We checked on their rates and they were the same or less than the Beachcomber. The owners of the Beachcomber seem to be pinching pennies and do not care about the guest experience. Unfortunately we will not stay here in the future and nether should you.…
Previous reviews refer to the excellent location for this moderate motel. Rooms are very clean and comfortable but very sparse in decor. It takes one back to the motor lodges of the 1960's. Some upper floor rooms have partial ocean views -- delightful! Room #5 is cozy with a refrigerator and free wifi. The TV is quite dated -- waiting to die before it will be replaced by a flat screen, I think.... In keeping with water preservation so necessary on the Monterey Peninsula, toilets and faucets are very low-flow -- I always wonder how water is preserved when you have to run it longer to achieve your cleaning needs(?) The queen-bedded room had an excellent bed! Service was a bit slow at check-in and non-existent at check-out, in spite of ringing the little bell on the desk and shouting for someone to come out of the back. I literally could have walked off with everything in the breakfast room...! Complimentary breakfast was very substantial and always welcome when there is no coffee maker in the rooms. Overall I was quite comfortable without pre-conceived aspirations. Access to all of the wonderful sights and adventures outweighed any negative aspects of this motel.…
Please call and ask questions before you stay here, that's all I ask. First, we had a very cold welcome by the young woman at the desk. The room smells like sewage. The only ventilation is one 6" by 3' window. Yes, 6 inches. The back balcony is permanently locked because the deck has been torn off. It's was 95 degrees in the room last night. No pool. The soda machine is completely sold out. And the breakfast was ready when the staff woke up, not when the customers woke up. There is also no phone in the room. It appears that there was once some remodeling that was started, but never completed. Stale, stagnate, sour odor. There are many false and misleading facts on the website, call and ask extensive questions before you stay. If you do have to stay, bring a fan, and plenty of extra towels.…
The minute you walk in you are pleasantly greeted with a smile by the young lady in the office. She gives you recommendations for things to do, places to go and restaurants to eat. This place could really use some updating and I was told that they are renovating slowly. Some rooms are renovated with new floors. And it's only few minutes walk to the beach.
If you are watching your pennies and you want a fabulous location, you can't beat this motel. There were five of us in two rooms and it was perfectly adequate. We had a couple of small problems that were quickly remedied. The staff was eager to please. The free breakfast had those great waffles one gets in a good motel. The restaurant on the property was good. The 5 minute walk to the beach was beautiful. Asilomar beach is very beautiful and the rocks bordering it are great for tide pools. Check when low tide is. Bring binoculars to look for sea otters in some of the kelp beds. It is fun to climb rocks and get great views of the crashing waves beneath you. It can get chilly at night so put warm clothes in your suitcase.
This place stinks. Activities include guess that stain on the carpet, and furniture, Looking at the closed swimming pool, betting when the upstairs deck will collapse due to dry rot, sharing towels because only 2 towels are left for a family of four, guessing why there is no maid service, guessing why all the rooms in the upstairs of one of the buildings have sliding glass doors and no balcony, trying to get the in room fridge working only to be told by the manager that it is an ice box (with an electrical cord), wondering how old the tube TVs are, and trying not to get the runs from the free breakfast. What a waste!
This is an iconic little 'last of the little inns'! It is run family style, and is an older building, so a bit 'tired'..but it's well worth the price you pay. it's the least expensive lodging in Pacific Grove. It is a one minute walk to the dunes of Asilomar Beach.. you hear the waves crashing at night. The rooms are simple and clean, there's a mini frig & t.v. Some rooms have a problem with hot water, so be sure to ask when booking/checking in. The staff is very friendly and helpful, but have their hands full with all that needs attending to in an older establishment...probably one of the last budget hotels on the edge of the sea! I suggest making sure the hot water IS working in the room you get. They serve a lovely continental breakfast buffet... including waffles, whipped cream, boiled eggs, granola & cereals, pastries/breads, yogurt, fresh fruit, and juices...and of course coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Quite an impressive spread. Without a doubt the best breakfast i've had in all budget hotels I have stayed in recently! The location is dreamlike with the sound of the crashing waves, and the bagpiper each night over at Spanish Bay which is just around the corner (5 minute beach track). The acclaimed Fishwife restaurant, adjacent to the inn.. is great. The drinks are well mixed, and the food is excellent. Try the New Zealand green lipped mussels in salsa & cream sauce. It's my favorite. I highly recommend the Beachcomber Inn for its ambiance, its proximity to the sea, and its kind and helpful staff. and some of the rooms have patios or balconies, and many of them have very 'tired' carpets. They clean them, but they are just old. Hopefully they'll be installing new carpet soon! All in all it's a sweet little place to spend a restful time by the sea. Wifi is good, and included.…
I don't like to write negative reviews so I'm just going to give some constructive feedback. You have an awesome location with so many things that could make this place a real gem. Get the pool and sauna fixed, offer bikes again and take care of the back area that use to be available to guests but now looks like it's the back yard to people possibly living in motel?. We came here 8 years ago and had great times but the new ownership didn't offer anything from our previous experiences and didn't let us know before coming. Still costs the same as other Pacific Grove properties without the amenities. The potential is so great so invest a little and make it the great property it can and should be. It doesn't need to be fancy, just make it fun again.
