Wanted to try a more boutique motel in the Pacific Grove area, and decided to start with the Deer Haven Inn. On a recent day trip to the area, we had spent time driving into the different properties near the Asilomar Conference Center, and looked for something away from our usual Monterey choices. Deer Haven Inn was a cute property with a short walk to the beach, but close enough to grocery stores on HWY 68 or to restaurants in downtown Pacific Grove.
We took a double queen room that was upstairs, but with a window that opened up onto the street behind, so that we could leave it open during the night just for air. The vanity was separate from the toilet and shower/tub combo with extra blankets and pillows already in the room. If the beds were any higher, we would have needed a step ladder, but they were fairly comfortable. The TV cabinet also had a mini fridge and microwave, and there was a table with two chairs to eat at or play cards. There was also a mini coffee maker, as well as a ceiling fan for air circulation.
The room was quiet, almost no traffic on the street behind us, which was nice compared to some of the other noisy places we have stayed in near downtown Monterey. No retail or food within walking distance, and because of Covid 19, no breakfast was available. The was a hair stuck on the hair dryer and we only hope that the room was properly wiped down to protect guests from the virus.
With that said, we enjoyed the room, and would have no problem coming back for a second stay. Did not have time to walk to the beach, but it is only about a 10 minute hike. The comfortable room and quiet location earns it a second chance to continue to impress.

We chose Deer Haven for its proximity to Asilomar. It is a classic motel that has had a bit of updating. . We had a king room (worst pillows ever - chunks of foam) with white linens ( important to us) which had a small loveseat and tiny table in the corner. Not really a work space. Ancient coffee maker but no fridge. It smelled heavily of the same disinfectant they use in convalescent homes when we arrived, and was very warm inside. We opened windows, left front door open to get a cross breeze , but you border a busy road and until very late you do hear traffic. However, you can park in front of your room which is very nice. The room was very clean and the location is a 20 minute walk to the beach. Staff seemed fine, the woman as we checked out was far more welcoming than when we checked in. No serious issues, but I am not sure I would stay hear again unless little else was available.

Thank you for taking the time to let our team know about your stay. We're so sorry you didn't see the mini-fridge in the cabinet under the TV! If you decide to stay with us another time, be sure to call the Front Desk if you have any needs or questions. We do have box fans available for guests on one of those rare warm days.... Kind regards, Sue and team

This simple, clean, safe, and peaceful inn is a short peaceful walk through Asilomar grounds to the beach. Although located on a corner, there was virtually no traffic during a mid-week visit in August. With hard floors, it is perfect for having our dog join us. In fact, we picked this Inn due to its welcoming attitude towards dogs (at least half the rooms had well-behaved dogs during our visit) and prime location. There is a lovely trail through the trees located across the street. We would stay here again.

Most of the rooms are on the first floor, but there are a few on the second floor. The rooms are on the smaller side, but have windows that open in the bathroom and the main room, which is a plus.

The location is great. Check in was through a window counter outside the office.
We were given a corner room with a king size bed in the 2nd floor with windows. Upon check in we noticed that the water in the toilet was constantly running due to a faulty valve. We went to the office and reported the problem. The owner, came took a look at it, and stated that he had the part to fix the toilet. We left on a walk and after 1 hour he called us stating that he could not fix it and that there was no plumber available. We were moved to a room with 2 queen size beds instead of a king size bed, which we had reserved.
Deer Haven Inn does not provide any breakfast. We spoke with other tourists in the area that were staying in hotels in the area, and found out that many hotels in are providing their guests with a grab and go breakfast. There is a small coffee maker in the room.
The mattress was very hard. We did not like the smell and the texture of the body wash that is in the shower. The shower head did not have much volume. The prior room had a hand held shower head.
There is a gas fireplace in the room. The room was clean. Sheets, towels and pillows were fine. There is a mini fridge and microwave in the room.
There are 2 staircases at each end of the building. One of them is not well lit at night.

I would give zero stars if I could. My honey and I were taking a chance during Covid to have a nice getaway in Monterey. We booked the Deer Haven Inn for four nights. What a mistake right from the beginning. The place is definitely a two star on the outside and I don’t know what the inside looks like. We came right at check-in time and were given the room in the most high traffic spot and next-door to housekeeping. We told the person working behind the Desk that I was a light sleeper and could we have a different room. Perhaps in the building that was away from the traffic. She said she didn’t have any other rooms. Then she gave us the room right next-door to the motel “check in” area. Basically the office she works in that has a window similar to a gas station. I told her that would be very busy too and could we just have one of these other rooms. There was nobody else in the parking lot at that time. She said no and as we were talking about this another couple drove up, checked in, and got a different room. We couldn’t believe how unprofessional and just straight up nasty this employee was. It was if she had a personal vendetta against us. We just left and luckily hotels.com gave us a full refund. We had to find another place that would take us for four days. Luckily it wasn’t difficult to find something better than the deer Haven Inn!

We chose this hotel based on location, and Trip Advisor reviews. What a disappointment. We stayed two nights, in two rooms.

Check-in was through a window, where the lady working there slid the paperwork and key through a slot. We asked for two rooms close together, and they could not have been further apart.

This motel is one level in some sections, and two levels in other sections. No elevator if you’re on the second floor.

First clue to the condition of the hotel is the door to each room. They’re completely battered, and in need of some paint. For the price we paid per night, they can afford a can of paint. The second room our family had, could be opened just by pushing on the door, even though it was locked! After many useless suggestions from the front office, and many hours of waiting, they finally moved our family in that room to a different room.

The rooms (two queen beds) are quite small. There is barely enough room to open up your suitcase. The fireplace was nice, but beware that there is no air conditioning.

There is also no breakfast included, even though the website indicates that there is.

The fire-pit looks nice in website photos, but is actually just outside the window where you check in, and right on the corner, at the stop sign. Not exactly a nice comfortable place to relax.

There was no housekeeping, when we were there for two nights, even though we hung the sign outside our door for housekeeping.

Check-out was disappointing. They took the key, and asked nothing about our stay.

I don’t usually write negative reviews, because I do a lot of research before hand, but this place deserves a poor rating. Location is the only good thing about it.

My wife and I planned a last minute trip to Monterey. I read a lot of the reviews for Deer Haven Inn and dismissed the bad ones and gave it a try and we are glad we did.
We reserved the king bed with fireplace
The fire place was simple and a nice touch to the room
The bathroom was huge with 2 shower heads. The front desk was very pleasant and the price was extremely reasonable
10 minutes from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and the 17 mile drive Very close to Carmel.
You are 5-10 minutes from food and a Safeway market Best part, only an 8 minute walk to the beach Pure white sand and a beautiful area. You won’t be disappointed
It’s not a huge room, but I’m not one to hang out in my room all day.
We will stay here again on our next visit
It’s simple, affordable and in the middle of everything you need to have fun and a great vacation
Small tip, if your going to the aquarium, take an Uber and save time on finding parking
It’s only about $13 each way

If you are looking for clean, basic and quiet place to sleep at a very reasonable nightly rate, this is the place for you. Our room had a king-size bed with a fireplace, microwave and a small refrigerator.

The location is away from touristy sights but within walking distance to the butterfly sanctuary and the beach. While we were walking to the sanctuary, we saw deer walking down the street as if that was just the thing to do on a nice sunny day.

This friendly motel is close to the tide pools and Asilomar beach, you can even walk down to the sea. Beautiful, quiet neighborhood next to 17 mile drive. Rooms are clean and good for the price. We ended up staying one more night and visited Pinnacles National Park which is only about an hour away.

There are so many small family run motels in Pacific Grove but I can imagine any of them doing a better job than this one. To do it, they would need to have AC and a pool but most of them (maybe all of them) don't. The temperature never gets hot outside but the upstairs rooms will bake in the July afternoons. It's really too hot in the room for a nap, so get out and enjoy the things you visit the peninsula for.

I have one simple thing that determines a high rating--the comfort in sleeping. This includes anything to add or take away from the chance of a perfect night's sleep like noise, smells, light, and especially the bed. Out of 8 hotels I have stayed at in the last two months, this bed was the best by far. No one in our double queen and our other single king rooms wanted to get up in the morning.

The walk to Asilomar Beach is short and beautiful. We are repeat visitors and my wife and I just decided to make Deer Haven in PG an annual thing. We won't even look at staying at other properties from now on.

Breakfast is complimentary for any overnight guest, adults and kids. For each "kid" over 12 years-old who stay in the parents' room, there is an additional room charge of $10+tax. I have stayed there before and just called the owner to confirm.
