Detailed Reviews
Monterey Bay is dotted with inns along its coast and I knew I had to stay in one the next time I visited the area. The Old St. Angela Inn is a beautiful Inn full of delightful character. During my stay I booked the room labeled "Whale Watch" - a beautiful room with a 2nd floor balcony view of the ocean.
The owner, Angela, is one of the warmest people you will ever meet and makes you feel very welcome. The breakfast served is superb, and it is top quality while also feeling home-cooked. I also feel like we got a warmer and more intimate experience because the Inn is run by Angela and her family. Other Inns appear to be more corporate and impersonal. Know that if you stay here, you are supporting a great small business while giving yourself an unforgettable experience.

We booked a room over the three day holiday weekend. Super gracious host Rosita! She welcomed us warmly upon arrival and reviewed the hospitality area with us. The next morning, she greeted all the guests for breakfast and served a nice continental spread. Only recommendation is try to avoid booking a room on the main floor Natucket or Newport) since the noise from the common area carries into those rooms.

I have been going to the St Angela Inn for 30 years. I was so disappointed when somebody turned it into a neglected Air BnB. Fear not! A new proprietor has lovingly brought the St Angela Inn back to its old glory days, and added some welcome new touches. Thank goodness this beautiful place of peace and tranquility was not destroyed during the Air BnB years of neglect. You can step right back into the wonderful decor and antique furnishings. The garden is rejuvenated. Everything is freshly painted, bright and clean. Orchids now cheer up the living room and the new proprietor, Angela, and host Rosita are so warm and welcoming--you feel like you've known them for years. Every attempt was successfully made to make our stay perfect. The breakfast was hardy and delicious.
Please! Come back to the St Angela if you were avoiding it during the Air BnB year or two. Try the St Angela if you haven't yet. A favorite tradition is making a coffee and slipping 2 blocks down to the coast for the sunrise each morning. Janie Frank

We have been staying here a couple times a year for 15 years. The previous management was wonderful . Once new management took over a couple of years ago it and the service has deteriorated. We made reservations before COVID and had to change the dates 3 times to wait until restrictions were lifted. We were scheduled for this September and had flights, car reservations, a dog boarder, took off work only to find out after numerous attempts to contact an innkeeper by phone, email, etc. that our reservations were cancelled. We have had no correspondence from anyone. Of course they require full payment at booking with no refund if you cancel. Well…I bet I will be waiting until he’ll freezes over for my refund now that they cancelled my reservation. New management has let the inn run down. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place!

This is a wonderful Bed and Breakfast. The room I was in is called The Crow's Nest. Very comfortable with a lovely view of the ocean.
I was travelling on my own for the first time in a long time and hoped that at a B&B I might get to talk to other people as opposed to the sanitized atmosphere of a hotel.
I came down to breakfast at 8.35 am and didn't leave the table till 10.30 am having had some lovely conversations.
I was trying to find a word to describe the feeling of the place and the one I came up with was trusting. A very nice feeling in this day and age.
Do yourselves a favor and visit this place, I will be going back.

We have been coming regularly to this inn for over 15 years (3x in the past year alone!) and have always loved it. But the inn has a new owner who lives in another state. It is being run by a couple who have no idea how to treat guests. I was screamed at for getting a glass of milk from the fridge, something I have done for years. If the rules have changed, why not inform me in a civill and polite manner? Why be so nasty? We had already noticed a change for the worse in the ambiance but after being subjected to such rude and unprofessional conduct we left early with a heavy heart. So many years, so many lovely memories. We will never return but will always hold a special place in our heart for the 'old' Old St. Angela Inn.

Response from Stangeladm, Public Relations Manager at The Old St. Angela Inn
Responded 8 May 2014
I am sorry you had a negative experience during your last visit. Although the kitchen of an inn is typically off limits to guests due to health and safety regulations, you are right to say that you deserved a kind explanation rather than a terse directive. As to the changes in ownership and staff, collectively, the new team at the inn has over 75 years’ experience in the service industry. The new owner, not only is interested in his client's comfort and well-being, as proven by both new and planned upgrades to the inn, but is also committed to their intellectual life, as demonstrated by the inn’s new library, which is populated by local authors, like John Steinbeck, tomes chronicling Monterey history, as well as a plethora of key resources on the marine life of our vast and beautiful coastal waters. We do hope you might reconsider and stay with us again.

Clean, quaint., but left w/ a bad taste in my mouth. Upon entering breakfast room, we were informed by kitchen staff that they were serving a fried croissant entree. I quietly requested 2 eggs instead. What the staff prepared was delicious. Then while sitting enjoying my eggs the lady innkeeper swiftly walked over, stood beside me, bent down nose-to-nose, and chided me for having requested something other thanthe entree, because doing so (her words) “messes them all up in the kitchen.” She did same w/ a guest at adjacent table, also while that guest was eating eggs they'd requested. A person’s metabolic/digestive needs/limitations is a personal issue, not something to point out and embarrass.
I found the incident unpleasant, wolfed down the rest, grabbed my day bag and left for the day quick as I could. The skilled kitchen staff handled the egg order great – throughout, I found them friendlier than the innkeepers, more genuine, sincere eye contact, more patient/pleasant tone of voice.
Although I don’t let one bad apple spoil all, THIS is what I recall from my stay. If innkeepers’ warmth, smiles and tact aren’t your priority, this B&B meets your needs.

We booked the Old St. Angela on the strength of the TripAdvisor's recent reviews. We spent two nights there September 2006. While I agree with my fellow tripadvisors comments on numerous postive aspects of the Inn, my overall experience was rated okay due to: road noise from Central Ave. which woke us up repeatedly through the night and the postage stamp size of the closet which necessitated hanging our clothes (we were there for a wedding) around the room. If you do not stay in either the bay view or crows nest rooms your experience will probably be above average certainly not excellent. I would strongly encourage management to get the rooms in the front sound proofed.

Everything about the place is nice except that the owners didn't not make us feel warm and welcome.

In our experience staying at Old St. Angela Inn, there are groups of friends who do reserve several rooms at one time. The above responses are right in that you would need to contact the owner/manager at the number they have provided.
