We arrived at 330pm and started the check in process. Per their website check in is at 400pm. They gave us a key card for the pool and told that the room wasn't ready and that they would call us on my cell once it was. A little before 4:30 the still hadn't called us. Since we were sitting on the steps in front of our room we could see the cleaning crew still working on it. I went back to registration and asked about our room. The man at the desk looked into a file, pulled out our reservation and said "Here it is. Sorry 'bout that". And that was it. No, waiting for 30 minutes isn't a huge deal, but neither is a sincere apology. The room itself, the Chinese Flower, was cute and as advertised but many of the outlets in it didn't work so we had to hunt around for where to charge our cell phones, etc. Our section of the hotel was quite noisy. The plumbing hammered for 30 seconds or so anytime anyone in the 12 or so unit building used the water. During the night there was loud rock music, presumably coming from their entertainment space up the hill, until nearly 4 am. At the end of our building there were a dozen or so teenage girls giggling and screaming as they walked back and forth in front of our room (all of the rooms face a common walkway). Apparently one of them was having a birthday party. It was a hot day, and apparently the ice machine couldn't keep up with the demand and was empty until we returned after dinner. Our room had a queen and a full bed which were reasonably comfortable, but not great. Ditto for the quality of the towels. However, it is in a very convenient location if you are driving to LA from SF. It is a bit overpriced but you pay for the location and kitsch of it all. We did not use much of the amenities since we were only there one day, but the fitness room, pool bar, and pool itself all were of low to mid quality - certainly not what you'd expect at a "nice" hotel. It is definitely unique, and memorable, and a fine stay so long as you are staying for the experience of it and not the quality and comfort. As an aside, the town of San Louis Obispo is very cute and fun to walk with a ton of great (if not inexpensive) shops and restaurants.

I booked the 2 rms over 2 months ago. The rooms were in an annex that had little thought. Other then walk hanging and a ruffle it looked like any other motel- depressing. When I complained that this was nothing like advertised I was told I booked thru a third party so I get the worst rooms. On top of the appalling nothing rooms there was a constant noise like a clothes washer. It cost so much and we were so excited to be staying there-a big mistake on our first nite on vacation.

Im still thinking about this place. 40 years of travelling and I have never experienced anything like it. In a two week road trip of California we stayed at 7 different hotels - this was the best experience bar far. Its not a spoof. Nor is it a self unaware or avoiding Disney type place. It is what it is and I love it for it. Unique and authentic, we (family with two children) stayed he for a night........In a botoxed, perfection and happiness obsessed world, what a refreshing destination. They say, it started with a (Madonna) couple that had a view and vision and the rest is history. Sure, it's showing signs of wear. Needs some TLC. But it only adds testimony to how many people have enjoyed it over the years and adds to the charm. If you are in the area and are open to something different, stay here. Honestly. Its SO refreshing.

I ordered the Pink Champaign cake for my Birthday and there was a blonde hair in my cake. The manager of the bakery was so rude and was yelling at me when I picked up my cake. I called to complain of this issue and her response to me was “what do you want me to do”. Never again.

I was extremely disappointed by this hotel. I knew that it was old, but I figured that a hotel charging $300-400 a night would have higher standards. The room was clean, but that’s where it ends. The smell was awfully musty, and we did not unpack any clothes out of fear that they would absorb this smell. The pool was a disappointment, with chairs that look like they are from the 80s. The pink tennis court, which we were looking forward to, had squirrels running around it and the net was broken. There were dark spots on it and it looked dirty. There are signs all over the property that only hotel guests may use the facilities, and the amenities all require entry cards. There are also signs that only guests may park there. To me this indicates that, for some reason, people are trying to sneak into the property to use these disgusting facilities. This hotel’s heyday has long passed, and the clientele now consists of sketchy looking young people who maybe want to post about this hotel on Instagram, mixed with a couple of loud children running around, who could be heard late into the night through the paper- thin walls. There were also numerous trailers parked on the property. The best hotel I could compare this place to would be the Circus Circus in Las Vegas. That hotel draws people to the amusement park. This hotel lures people to their uniquely decorated rooms and supposed amenities, which quickly prove to be unusable due to the crowd hanging out there. We could not get out of there fast enough. If this hotel is on your bucket list, I advise you to cross it off and stay ANYWHERE else. If you stay here you will surely regret it. You have been warned.

To celebrate my friend’s 76th birthday, we decided to check into the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. It is a sprawling collection of buildings, each room with a different decor. Parking is convenient, as each room has its own space in front of the room.

Beautiful buildings but rooms are outdated . None of the outlets worked unless the light switches were on, beds were mushy, and constant noises made it hard to sleep. Tv had terrible picture and anytime people were talking in room next door, we could hear their entire conversation. Dinner at the steakhouse was delicious but so very expensive. Expect to pay close to $60 for one steak dinner. No fridge in the room, but front office stored left overs for us

I stayed at the Madonna Inn because I was promised "a cathedral of kitsch" and I was not disappointed on that score. The whole place is full-on experience from start to finish. Public areas are all clean, well maintained, there are plenty of folk obviously attending to guests, to maintenance and so on. The check-in was quick and easy as was the check out. My bill was accurate although as I had booked through an online booking site there was a notable "resort fee" to pay on arrival. The room was delightfully decorated, spacious and of nice quality of fitting. I had The Golfer. These rooms are in a small block away from the main building. The only inconvenience I had was the next door room was occupied by a very loud family who made a lot of noise until quite late and as there are connecting doors between the rooms there is no sound deadening. You can't predict stuff like that I guess. Another day with quiet occupants, my stay would have been perfect.... The restaurant is great. Its pretty amazing decor. There was a dance floor and a live band playing. The food was very good and the wine also. There were plenty of nice local options for the food and drink. This is the main steak house, the pink one! I also had breakfast and this was at the Copper Mine Cafe onsite, and this was a nice breakfast, I liked the decor and the service was good too.

I stayed here with my 12-year-old son, who was super excited to stay in the “Old World” suite, room 192. The room was so cool. A weird hybrid of caveman and crazy old grandma styles. Unfortunately, the room smelled like sewage. We reported it right away to the front desk who promised to take care of it while we were swimming in the pool. We asked if we could burn some incense to cover up the smell but they told us that we would be charged for smoking in the room if we did that. We came back to the same smell, covered up by the scent of some air freshener, but this didn't get rid of the sewage smell at all. If my son hadn't looked forward to staying in this room for months, I would have asked to move to a different room or requested a refund and stayed somewhere else. We opened all the windows stayed one night before leaving early the next morning. I told the front desk clerk that we loved the room, but the smell made it very difficult to enjoy our stay. The response was a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and a "we'll let the manager know about the smell" If kitsch is really important, and cleanliness is not important at all, Madonna Inn is perfect. It seems to be a trade-off at this hotel, unfortunately.
