This place worked well for us. We walked along West Cliff and saw the surfing, walked to wonderful meals and entertainment in the downtown. Breakfast was delicious, the company was wonderful each of our three mornings. This is not a high tech place, wifi was slow, no TV, but frankly, that was perfect for me as it helped me be...

My daughter and I just returned home after a very pleasant stay at the Darling House. I had admired this Grand Dame for decades but had never stayed there. It was such a joy for us to be the guests of Darrell and Karen Darling, they are the parents that everyone wishes they had and the home is a work...

This house must have really been something in its day. It is a beautiful home in a perfect location to see the sites. The Hostess was wonderful and helpful about where to go and what to do. Breakfast was yummy, fresh fruits, yogurt and croissants served on darling china. I believe the rooms were once magnificent but are now a...

We really needed to read between the lines of the other guest reviews. What once must have been one of the top land marks in the area is now run down. To the point it should not be considered a place to stay any more. The paint is falling from the walls and ceilings. Old paint chips equals lead The...

There are not enough good things to say. The family that owns and runs this house are kind and warm. The house is inviting. We stayed in a room overlooking the Pacific. We could hear walrus and see dolphins jumping. Pure magic.

First the good: the house is a great architectural asset! The breakfasts were good, and the owners are pleasant to talk to. The location is great - just a half mile or so to the Santa Cruz pier. The views out the front windows of Monterey Bay are tough to beat. Now the bad: the rooms are ready for deep...

This was once a beautiful home in a fantastic location, and it does have a history...However, I think owners must be treading water financially...My room was awful...a "chinese crib" type bed with dingy, ragged bedding.. I struggled climbing in and out of the thing... spiders on the wall...bathroom down the hall. Oh...used bars of soap....! Never experienced that before...my trip...

This home is experiencing the effects of the drought in CA just like everyone else. They have chose to use their water wisely and no longer water their yard so the property looks a little different in person than in the pictures; the lush green yard is gone. We enjoyed the historic home, the woodwork, the furnishings, and especially the...

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us at the Darling House during your visit to Santa Cruz. You are correct in noting the effects the drought has had on our historically lush & colorful gardens. We do miss the fragrances & beauty that abundant water provides, however we realize we must evaluate our priorities regarding the importance...

This B&B unfortunately is very tired. It really needs an update in several areas. Not I would say exceptionally clean. Furniture broken. Same breakfast two days in a row. Would have preferred a little wine crackers and cheese in the evening before setting out for dinner or a evening out. There were just cookies and very tepid tea. Stayed there...

While we've worked hard over the years to maintain our old-world charm, it sounds like we may have let a few things slip through the cracks. We're sorry to hear that your room didn't feel fresh and clean -- we'll certainly be working on improving that. We'll definitely take your suggestions regarding the breakfast and the wine and cheese, as...

The house is original, no modern updates. No phones, TVs, etc. Also, no mirror near an outlet to style your hair, and no decent mirror for makeup. But, those are minor inconveniences compared to the genteel ambiance of the house. The location is far enough from the boardwalk that you could ignore that busy area, but still walking distance to...

It sounds like the carefully preserved details, and the proximity to some of Santa Cruz's best spots are what you loved most about our place. We couldn't be happier to hear it, Mary! It was so wonderful to have you with us, and we love that you're already anxious to return. Thanks for mentioning the things like the bathroom mirror....
